Yuriko Suzuki, MD, MPH, PhD., is Section Chief of Disaster Mental Health,
Department of Adult Mental Health at National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry.
She graduated from Faculty of Medicine, Yamagata University and Graduate School.
After working at a private psychiatric hospital, she obtained her MPH from UCLA. Dr
Suzuki joined the Department of Psychiatric Rehabilitation, National Center of
Neurology and Psychiatry and was actively involved in an evaluation research on
assertive community treatment program which was first implemented in Japan.
Dr Suzuki’s research interests on disaster mental health are wide, from
epidemiology to health service research. She advised mental health professionals and
conducted epidemiological research after Chuetsu earthquake in 2004. She participated
in a workshop on disaster mental health organized by WHO and the World Psychiatric
Association and was involved in development of guidelines on disaster mental health.
She serves as a member of WHO International Advisory Group for the Revision of
ICD-10 Mental and Behavioural Disorders.
In the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, she advised mental
health professionals in Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima, and is a member of the Mental
Health Group of the Fukushima Health Management Survey.

