3/17/14 Preserving Soybean Yield Maximizing return on investment is on every business person’s priority list. In agriculture our main goal is to increase crop yield translating to increased income for our customers, while employing sustainable practices. There are several variables that factor into crop productivity. However, it is critical to manage as many variables as possible to provide greatest yield. University trials have consistently demonstrated a 10-15% yield loss resulting from early season weed competition. The widespread adoption of glyphosate technologies shifted grower focus on controlling weeds in crop after weed emergence. Weed spectrums in Illinois and Wisconsin have also shifted to glyphosate-resistant biotypes, in addition to species that glyphosate is less effective in controlling. Several weed species are top of mind for many growers in Illinois and Wisconsin, including marestail, waterhemp, palmer amaranth, common lambsquarters and ragweeds. Weeds exhibiting prolonged germination intervals should be managed with herbicides providing activity coinciding with emergence patterns. Including residual herbicides in weed management programs will implement stewardship and reduce in season competition preserving crop yield potential. There is a uniform message from University weed management consultants and that message is start clean and stay clean. This is especially important for glyphosate-resistant weed biotypes as chemical options for control are more limited in postemergence applications in comparison to preemergence applications. University research has demonstrated the value of including Authority herbicides in preemergence weed management programs. Choosing one of six brands that fits best on a specific acre and specific weed spectrum allows growers to tailor weed management programs based off of specific needs. I have heard the statement the easiest weed to control is the one that never comes up, and including residual herbicides in weed management programs is the first step in season long weed control. However, in conventional soybeans full rates of residual herbicides are crucial for season long success. Typical postemergence applications in conventional soybeans consist of PPO-inhibitors such as Marvel (broadleaf control) orALS-inhibitors (ex. Pursuit) tank-mixed with graminicides (ex. Select). When controlling broadleaves in conventional soybean systems making applications at the correct weed height is essential. Weeds reaching 4’’ in height become much more difficult to control with postemergence options in conventional soybeans. Including residual herbicides at full rates will provide the greatest in-season activity translating to better flexibility in making timely postemergence applications, allowing an easier finish. Marvel herbicide has an excellent fit in controlling waterhemp, palmer amaranth, lambsquarters, morningglories, velvetleaf and ragweeds in conventional weed management programs. However, certain weed species such as lambsquarters, morningglory, waterhemp and palmer amaranth encompass an inherent tolerance to glyphosate due to selectivity characteristics and resistance mechanisms. Diversifying herbicide modes of action will control a larger weed spectrum and improve consistency. Furthermore, employing alternative modes of action will assist in preserving the effectiveness of glyphosate, and the utility of current transgenic herbicide traits. Marvel is a pre-mixture of two protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) inhibitors that react with light to break down cell membranes. An optimized ratio of both PPO’s (fomesefan and fluthiacet-ethyl) provides complimentary activity on broadleaf weeds offering improved consistency in weed spectrum. Applications of Marvel (7.25 oz/a) + glyphosate (1 lb ai/a) will implement rapid phytotoxicity in addition to contributing supplemental activity on weed species that glyphosate is less effective at controlling. Timing is critical for greatest activity when applying PPO herbicides. Applications made before weeds reach 4’’ in height will result in maximum activity. Marvel offers application flexibility as it can be applied to soybeans from EPP to full flower. Season long weed control is critical for maximizing yield. Including Marvel with POST herbicide treatments will improve in season control of tough weeds. *A maximum of 0.375 lb ai/a fomesafen (from any product containing fomesafen) may be applied per acre in ALTERNATE years in Region 2. This change reduces the plant-back restriction of tank-mixes with other group 14 (PPO-inhibitors) such as Authority herbicides with Sharpen herbicide. On reduced or no-till fields, labeled rates of any Authority product may be applied in tank-mixtures with Sharpen at 1 fl. oz/a with a 14 day plant-back restriction. For example using Authority Maxx, Authority Maxx 5-9.6 oz/a (depending on soil type) + Glyphosate 1 lb ae/a + Sharpen 1 oz/a may be applied and soybeans are can be planted 14 days after application. On conventional tilled fields the pre-plant restriction will remain at 30 days when Authority is tank-mixed with Sharpen. This label change will only apply to Sharpen herbicide and not other products containing saflufenacil. The plant-back restriction for other saflufenacil containing products will remain at 30 days when tank-mixed with alternative group 14 herbicides.
