The training program of the Academy
 The
Hungarian Academy of Justice (HAJ) is a
department of the National Office for the
Judiciary (NOJ) and one of its departments is
the Department for Judicial Training
 The
Department for Judicial Training of the
HAJ prepares the training program, which is
approved by the president of the NOJ
 Compulsory
 Central
– elective training courses
– regional – local trainings

x 5-day periods:
- 1st week: organisational management,
ethics, retorics, psychology;
- 2nd week: procedural law and decisionediting;
- 3rd week: criminal mock trial;
- 4th week: civil mock trial

Participiants

Court secretaries: lawyers with bar-exam already
dealing with minor legal disputes, misdemeanours and
taking evidence on hearings – continuous training on
these special legal fields

Judges: prepare the cases, conduct and evaluate mock
trials

Psychologists: give psychological evaluation on the
mock trial

Technicians: video recording of the mock trial, which is
handed over to the court secretaries

Legal evaluation

Aspects of the legal evaluation form:
1) Evaluation of preparation:
- knowledge of the case documentation
published on the website of the HAJ in advance,
- knowledge of the applied material and
procedural law
2) Evaluation of the trial:
- application of the procedural regulations,
- record keeping,
- trial style

Evaluation is based on a 1-4 scale and may be
explained by the mock trial conducting judge
Psychological evaluation

Aspects of the psychological evaluation form :
1) Verbal communication,
2) Non-verbal communication (body language),
3) Handling emotional interactions in the
courtroom,
4) Conflict handling methods.
 The
psychologists take the evaluation criteria
into consideration and evaluate the performance
on a 1-4 scale: poor / satisfactory / good /
excellent
