PRAY FOR OUR DEAD: Orlando Parra April 12th, 2015 Divine Mercy Sunday Page Seven CATHOLIC CONVERSATIONS ON THE SCRIPTURES Archdiocese of Miami - Ministry of Christian Formation April 12, 2015 Second Sunday of Easter: Divine Mercy Sunday Gospel reading John 20:19-31 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nail marks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name. Brief commentary: Happy Easter! It has been said that, “every Sunday is an echo of Easter Sunday.” It is the Christian “day of the Lord,” it is “the day the Lord has made…[in which] we rejoice and are glad,” for it was early in the morning prior to sunrise on the first day of the week that Jesus Christ vanquished the power of death and rose gloriously from the tomb. So deep and complete is the divine mercy that every act of God is an act of mercy, from Creation to the new creation of Resurrection. God is life-giving love. Divine Mercy Sunday affirms the Easter message that the underlying attitude of God toward all of his creation is merciful love. Because of this love God’s Son gave the total gift of himself from conception to death on a cross to open for all the fullness of salvation. In today’s gospel the risen Christ appears to his disciples with the gift of his risen presence, his peace and his Spirit; and he entrusts to them the mission of mercy and forgiveness by which the power of evil and death continue to be vanquished. They cannot help but to “rejoice.” They would never be the same again…and neither would the lives of so many who would “come to believe without seeing.” Today we, like Thomas, touch his wounds and ‘we are healed by them’. We too exclaim in awe and in deep gratitude, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus Christ continues to breath his breath of life, his Spirit, in us, in our Church, in our world, and empowers us for the mission of reconciliation to the people of our times. In a world so marked by mercilessness and pitilessness – as we are witnessing in the brutal persecutions of Christians and minorities across Iraq, Syria, Nigeria, Libya and so many other places, and as evident in the indifference toward the poor, by violence of so many kinds, by the dehumanization of the unborn child, by prejudice, racism and sexism – Christians realize how much the world needs mercy! When Jesus commissions his disciples to forgive sins, he is also telling them to be agents of mercy in the world. Today we need to pray for victims of hatred, selfishness and indifference, but we also will ‘pray for our enemies, for those who persecute us’, as Jesus himself taught us to do and as he himself did from the cross. We have to believe that people – even the most despicable – can change, for we ourselves were once “foolish, disobedient, hateful…[until] the grace of God appeared” (Titus). Like Ezekiel we know that “God does not want the death of the sinner, but that he turns from his wicked ways…” Let us pray with passion for the protection of our persecuted sisters and brothers, that both the Lord and the nations will come to their swift assistance; and let us pray for the conversion of our oppressors and our world. Jesus Christ, crucified and gloriously risen from the dead, is the divine power to subvert and defeat all evil with mercy. +O God, whose only begotten Son, by his life, death and resurrection has opened for us the fullness of your divine mercy, grant that through the merits of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection we may receive your mercy in times of need, become instruments of mercy in this world, and reach the goal of your divine mercy, which is eternal life with you, who are Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. REFLEXIONES CATÓLICAS SOBRE LA BIBLIA Arquidiócesis de Miami - Ministerio de Formación Cristiana 12 de Abril de 2015 II Domingo de Pascua: Divina Misericordia (Ciclo B) Lectura del santo evangelio según San Juan 20:19-31 Al anochecer de aquel día, el primero de la semana, estaban los discípulos en una casa, con las puertas cerradas por miedo a los judíos. Y en esto entró Jesús, se puso en medio y les dijo: “Paz a vosotros.” Y, diciendo esto, les enseñó las manos y el costado. Y los discípulos se llenaron de alegría al ver al Señor. Jesús repitió: “Paz a vosotros. Como el Padre me ha enviado, así también os envío yo.” Y, dicho esto, exhaló su aliento sobre ellos y les dijo: “Recibid el Espíritu Santo; a quienes les perdonéis los pecados, les quedan perdonados; a quienes se los retengáis, les quedan retenidos.” Tomás, uno de los Doce, llamado el Mellizo, no estaba con ellos cuando vino Jesús. Y los otros discípulos le decían: “Hemos visto al Señor.” Pero él les contestó: “Si no veo en sus manos la señal de los clavos, si no meto el dedo en el agujero de los clavos y no meto la mano en su costado, no lo creo.” A los ocho días, estaban otra vez dentro los discípulos y Tomás con ellos. Llegó Jesús, estando cerradas las puertas, se puso en medio y dijo: “Paz a vosotros.” Luego dijo a Tomás: “Trae tu dedo, aquí tienes mis manos; trae tu mano y métela en mi costado; y no seas incrédulo, sino creyente.” Contestó Tomás: “¡Señor mío y Dios mío!” Jesús le dijo: “¿Porque me has visto has creído? Dichosos los que crean sin haber visto.” Muchos otros signos, que no están escritos en este libro, hizo Jesús a la vista de los discípulos. Éstos se han escrito para que creáis que Jesús es el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios, y para que, creyendo, tengáis vida en su nombre. Comentario breve: ¡Felices Pascuas! Se ha dicho de que, “cada domingo es un eco del domingo de Pascua.” Es el “día del Señor” cristiano, es el “el día que hizo el Señor…[en cual] nos regocijamos y alegramos,” porque era temprano en la mañana antes del amanecer ese primer día de la semana en que Jesucristo venció el poder de la muerte y resucito glorioso del sepulcro. Tan profundamente y completamente es la divina misericordia que cada acto de Dios es un acto de misericordia, desde la creación hasta la nueva creación de la resurrección. Dios es amor vivificante. El domingo de la Divina Misericordia afirma el mensaje de la Pascua que la actitud fundamental de Dios hacia su creación es de amor misericordioso. Es por este amor que el Hijo de Dios dio el don total de si mismo desde su concepción hasta la muerte en cruz para abrirnos la plenitud de la salvación. En el evangelio de hoy Cristo resucitado se le aparece a los discípulos con el don de su presencia resucitada, su paz y su Espíritu; y les confía la misión de la misericordia y el perdón por el cual es vencido el poder del mal y por el cual la muerte continua siendo vencida. Ellos no pueden mas que “regocijarse.” Nunca serán igual...si tampoco las vidas de todos “los que llegaran a creer sin ver.” Hoy, como Tomas, tocamos sus llagas y ‘somos sanados por ellas’. También nosotros exclamamos con asombro y con profunda gratitud, “¡Señor mío y Dios mío!” Jesucristo continua soplando su aliento de vida, su Espíritu, en nosotros, en su Iglesia, en nuestro mundo, y nos fortalece para la misión de reconciliación a los hombres y mujeres de nuestros tiempos. En un mundo tan marcado por la impiedad y crueldad – como vemos en la salvaje persecución de los cristianos y minorías a lo largo de Irak, Siria, Nigeria, Libia y en tantos otros lugares, y como es evidente en la indiferencia hacia los pobres, la violencia de tantas clases, por la deshumanización del ser humano por nacer, por el prejuicio, el racismo y sexismo – ¡los cristianos nos damos cuenta de lo mucho que el mundo necesita la misericordia! Cuando Jesús envía a sus apóstoles a perdonar los pecados, el también los hace así agentes de misericordia hacia el mundo. Hoy necesitamos orar por las victimas del odio, egoísmo e indiferencia, pero también ‘oremos por nuestros enemigos, por los que nos persiguen’, así como Jesús mismo nos enseño y como el mismo hizo desde la cruz. Tenemos que creer que las personas – hasta los mas despreciables – pueden cambiar, porque nosotros fuimos ‘necios, desobedientes, odiamos…[hasta que] la gracia de Dios se apareció” (Tito). Y esa es la razón de esta carta. Para las hermanas de esta parroquia, estamos ofreciendo la oportunidad perfecta no solamente para tomar unos días de descanso del trabajo diario, sino también para que se regale a usted misma un poco de tiempo y así poder reflexionar acerca de su vida espiritual. Asistiendo al próximo retiro de Emaús, va a poder experimentar a Dios y a profundizar verdaderamente en su relación con el Señor. El retiro de Emaús es una experiencia donde mujeres hacen ministerio a otras mujeres. Está basado en el Evangelio de San Lucas 24: 13-35. En este pasaje de las Escrituras, dos discípulos se encuentran con el Señor después de Su resurrección, camino hacia el pueblo de Emaús, y lo reconocen al partir el pan. Yo quiero hacer un llamado a todas las mujeres de la parroquia, mayores de 21 años, para que devotamente consideren reservar el fin de semana del 22, 23 y 24 de mayo del 2015, para este retiro, que se llevará a cabo en el Centro Pastoral Madonna. Tendrán la oportunidad de hacer nuevas amistades, y volverán a sus casas y trabajos descansadas y renovadas. El Ministerio de Emaús ha pasado muchas horas en la preparación de este retiro para que esta peregrinación que va a empezar, sea un éxito. Las inscripciones para este retiro comenzarán el 19 de Abril y continuarán todos los fines de semana hasta el 10 de mayo. No deje pasar esta oportunidad de hacer el viaje en el camino de Emaús.
