Hello Oak Grove Community,
This week, Dr. Meltzer would
like to highlight some of the
tools used in our technology
classes that are offered to
students in 6th through 8th
grade.
Creativity is Moving
Beyond
the Keyboard
In these classes, students are using “Makey-Makey”
hardware to create new game controllers and musical
instruments. Students connect the Makey-Makey to the
computer and then use clay, aluminum foil, graphite,
or coins to create a circuit. Most students use the
programming platform Scratch, but it can be used with
any computer program. You can see some great musical
examples made by others here including playing a
melody with a pizza. These activities in the technology
classes align well with our Science by Design class, and
our Robotics Club. These activities support a worldwide
movement called MakerSpace where people create
objects with the help of technology.

The Board appreciates the comments and concerns
that are addressed during the Public Comment portion

comments and concerns can not be addressed at the

Congratulations to Aamir
Tanveer, who was crowned Oak
Grove’s National Geographic
Bee Champion January 26th.
Aamir now has his sights set
on qualifying for the Illinois
State Bee and a chance
to win a $50,000 college
scholarship. Good luck, Aamir!
Congratulations to all the
contestants who made the Bee a
fantastic event.
Oak Grove Honor Society
On Saturday, January 24, members of the Oak Grove
Honors Society went to pack food at Feed My Starving
Children, located in Libertyville. Their job was to pack
special meals for people living in disease and natural
disaster stricken areas, like Northwest Africa and Haiti.
After two hours of working, they had packed at least
40 of the amazing 163 boxes that were filled during
the session. That’s 35,208 meals packed! Amazing
job and thank you to everyone who participated; we
were able to feed 96 children for a whole year!
Last Day of School Change
Unfortunately, with the blizzard on Sunday through
Monday, we ended up having to utilize another
emergency day. Each year when we are creating our
calendar, we incorporate five “emergency days”. Thus
far we have used four! Now, the last day of school will
be Wednesday, June 10th. We will keep you updated
as the year progresses, but let’s think Spring!
