L. Schoonbeek, prof. J.L. Moraga-González and dr. M.A. Haan - Defense: October 13, 2014 - Abstract: This dissertation tries to increase our understanding of collusion, antitrust policy and leniency programs. First, we investigate in an experiment whether, and if so when, price leadership facilitates tacit collusion. Second, we study theoretically and experimentally the degree of collusion for different industry structures that are subject to regulation by means of yardstick competition. Third, we examine in an experiment the effectiveness of such a program when firms are allowed to communicate freely and can apply for leniency after observing whether the antitrust authority has started a cartel investigation. Fourth, we investigate in a theoretical model the effectiveness of Amnesty Plus, under which a firm may receive lower fines for one cartel if it is the first to report another cartel on another market.
