Church a procession to the Cenotaph
on Penrith Road was led by the
President of the Keswick branch of
the Royal British Legion, Jim
Newstead, (Welch Regiment) and
standard bearer Graham Nelson,
former Royal Marine, followed by
the Revds Jennet Macleod, Stuart
Penny and Canon Stephen Pye for
the wreath-laying ceremony.

followed by the many other organisations including Rotary International, Cumbria Fire and Rescue
Service, Cumbria Police, the Border
Regiment, Derwent Lodge of the
Maysons and the Derwent Club.

on Monday attended by members of Keswick Town Council, led again by
Jim Newstead of the Royal British Legion.
Former mayor Andrew Lysser laid a wreath on behalf of the Council
before Mr Newstead read the ode of Remembrance taken from Laurence
Binyon’s poem, For the Fallen:
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Derwent War Memorial on Sunday which was well attended.

Wreaths and crosses were laid by members of the church
congregations, Braithwaite School and Above Derwent Parish Council as
well as representatives from the John Roan School in Greenwich before
the names of those from Braithwaite, Thornthwaite, Newlands and
Portinscale parishes, who lost their lives during the two World Wars, were
read out.
Castle Crag Service
Also on Sunday, a crowd of around 200 people climbed to the summit
of Castle Crag in Borrowdale for the annual Service of Remembrance
held there.
Thirty members of the 1st Battalion of the Duke of Lancaster’s
Regiment, under the command of Major Mark Howard and W02
Cockburn MC were also present.
After a welcome by Miles Jessop, owner of the valley’s Scafell Hotel,
the service was led by Major Howard, who also read the poem ‘In
Flanders Field’, written in May 1915 by John McCrae.
The names of those from Borrowdale who died in the Great War were
read out, along with the names of officers and soldiers of the Duke
of Lancaster’s Regiment who have fallen in Iraq and in the present
Afghanistan conflict.
The exhortation and dedication were read out by Major Howard and the
laying of the regimental wreath was carried out by Sgt Stevens, who had
specifically asked to carry out the duty in memory of Kgn Shaw, who lost
his life during their last tour of duty.
Two minutes silence followed before the Last Post and Reveille, played
by Drummers Sahy and Madine, resounded around the surrounding fells.
This was the third visit by members of the Duke of Lancaster’s
Regiment to the Castle Crag ceremony, after which Major Howard and
his soldiers were entertained to lunch and drinks at the Scafell Hotel
before returning to their base at Catterick.

John Bryson Jnr.
Tributes are being paid to a
Keswick man who died this week
at the age of 33.
John Bryson junior, who had
a young son called Henry, was
found dead at his parents’ house in
Borrowdale Road on Tuesday
morning.
The coroner for North and West
Cumbria has been informed but
had yet not been announced if
there is to be an inquest.
Mr Bryson’s parents Judith and
John Bryson senior and their
daughter Caroline were too distressed to comment about the
tragedy. The couple’s younger son
Andrew is due to arrive home
today from New Zealand where he
lives.
Many friends have written personal tributes on Facebook. Among
them was Ben Sharp, who played
cricket for Keswick with John
junior, who was a keen sportsman.
He wrote: “Still can’t believe it.
You were the first person that properly welcomed me to Keswick
Cricket, encouraged me so much
when you played and I am grateful
for it. Cheers Jabba lad. RIP. Never
forgotten.”
Among the many others was
one from Lee Zaninetti,’ who
wrote: “A proper, proper top bloke
who always had time to listen.
Loved his music and was a wonderful dad. JB - you will be sadly
missed by many.”
John Bryson junior had attended
St Bees School and played for
many years for Keswick Cricket
Club’s first XI, being part of the
team that won the Higson Cup for
the first time in the club’s history
in 2006.
His father was part of the
Keswick-based Bryson’s family
bakery business. John junior had
also run his own sandwich and cafe
business in Keswick town centre
for a while.
Both John Bryson junior’s parents
had coached at Keswick Cricket
Club for many years.
