Since joining the MAC in 1948 (66 years) Miami has had just 14 losing seasons. • Since 2006 it has been a different story. Miami has had losing seasons in seven of the last eight years, which includes just one MAC Championship (2010). • The RedHawks have lost 16 straight contests dating back to 2012. Miami’s last win was Oct. 27, 2012 at home versus Ohio (23-20). • Miami averaged 9.8 points and 225.8 yards per game last season, which ranked 122nd nationally. Defensively the RedHawks ranked 106th in scoring defense (35.7) and 113th in total defense (484.2). • Head coach Chuck Martin, who earned that title on Dec. 3, 2013, brings an impressive resume to Oxford, Ohio. Not only was he 74-7 in six years at Grand Valley State (2004-09), he has coached in seven national championship games in the past 13 seasons. He has twice been named the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) National Coach of the Year and has been a coordinator on both sides of the ball. • As mentioned before, Martin brought in nine new assistant coaches with him, four of which coached with him during his time at Grand Valley State: Matt Pawlowski (Defensive Coordinator), Eric Koehler (Co-Offensive Coordinator/QB), George Barnett (Co-Offensive Coordinator/OL) and Bill Brechin (Wide Receivers). Pat Welsh (Tight Ends) played for Coach Martin at GVSU. • The three players joining Coach Martin from Notre Dame are Andrew Hendrix (QB), Lo Wood (DB) and Alex Welch (TE), all fifth-year seniors and expected to play a major role with the RedHawks this season. Both Hendrix (Moeller High School) and Welch (Elder High School) are local to the Oxford area. • Another new addition did not have to change locations, just sports. Fifth-year senior Quinten Rollins played four season with the RedHawks’ basketball team, finishing his career second at Miami and 12th all-time in the MAC in steals (214). The new cornerback played in 116 career games on the hardwood. -2- Game 1 • Marshall at Miami RedHawk Media Availability Monday (5 days out) Tuesday (4 days out) Wednesday (3 days out) Thursday (2 days out) Friday (1 day out) Coach Martin is on the MAC Media Teleconference from 10:26-10:34 Contact Ken Mather at the conference office for call-in information. Attendance: 27,148 HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—Miami University’s football team went toe-to-toe with Marshall University in the first 30 minutes on Saturday night at Joan C. Edwards Stadium, playing to a 14-14 tie, but the Thundering Herd scored 38 unanswered points in the second half to notch a 52-14 win in the season opener for both teams. Miami struck first, scoring on its second offensive series. Senior quarterback Austin Boucher launched a 45-yard pass that junior wide receiver Dawan Scott plucked out of the air between two Thundering Herd defenders on the Marshall 5-yard line. After rushing for a yard, Miami lost yardage on its second-down play, but Boucher hit senior tight end Steve Marck in the end zone on third down for the RedHawk score with 6:49 to go in the first quarter. A sophomore Kaleb Patterson extra point handed Miami the early 7-0 lead. A 39-yard rush by Marshall’s Kevin Groom set up a Thundering Herd score at the 10:04 mark of the second quarter. Essray Taliaferro rambled into the end zone from 1 yard out for the Marshall touchdown. The Justin Haig extra point knotted the score, 7-7. With 3:44 to go in the opening half, Marshall’s Rakeem Cato threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Tommy Quickie Shuler as he plunged out of the right side of the Statistics (Final) Miami University vs Marshall 31, 2013 at Huntington, end zone. Miami was picked to finish sixth in the East Division behind Bowling Green (144 points), Akron (114 points), Ohio (107 points), Buffalo (87 points) and Kent State (72 points). The RedHawks were picked ahead of UMass (23 points). Toledo was picked to win the West Division with 114 points. Six RedHawks Named Preseason All-MAC Phil Steele and Phil Steele’s College Football Preview named six RedHawks to its preseason All-MAC team, announced on June 2. Bryson Albright (third-team), Fred McRae (third-team), Andrew Hendrix (fourth-team), Alex Welch (fourth-team), Zach Lewis (fourth-team) and Kent Kern (fourth-team) were named to the team. Last Hendrix Start When Andrew Hendrix opens the game versus Marshall it will be his first career start as a college quarterback. In fact, the Cincinnati, Ohio, native has not started a game since his senior season in high school, back in 2009. Hendrix spent four seasons with Notre Dame, completing 25-of-58 passes for 360 yards and one touchdown. He added 229 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Luck of the Irish Andrew Hendrix is not the only player to join head coach Chuck Martin in the move to Oxford, Ohio. Also making the trip were Alex Welch and Lo Wood. Welch, a tight end, caught just one pass during his Notre Dame career, but saw action in 22 contests. Wood, a defensive back, finished his Notre Dame career with 19 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and one interception that he returned for a 57-yard touchdown versus Maryland in 2013 -5- Spencer Treadwell Rushing....................................................................2 Receiving.................................................................1 Passing.....................................................................1 Total..........................................................................4 David Frasier Receiving.................................................................3 Total..........................................................................3 Drew Kummer Rushing....................................................................2 Total..........................................................................2 Rokeem Williams Receiving.................................................................1 Total..........................................................................1 Grant Niemiec Rushing....................................................................1 Total..........................................................................1 Austin Gearing Rushing....................................................................1 Total..........................................................................1 Future Miami Schedules 2015 Sept. 5 Sept. 12 Sept. 19 Sept. 26 Presbyterian College at Wisconsin Cincinnati at Western Kentucky 2016 Sept. 3 at Iowa Sept. 10 at Cincinnati Sept. 17 Western Kentucky 2017 Sept. 2 at Marshall Sept. 9 at Michigan State Sept. 16 Cincinnati 2018 Sept. 1 Marshall Sept. 15 at Cincinnati Oct. 20 at Army Times, date and opponents are subject to change. Roethlisberger ended his three-year playing tenure (2001-03) as the most prolific passer in program history. #40 Bob Hitchens No. 40 was retired in 1973 to mark the accomplishments of tailback Bob Hitchens, who concluded his career as the most prolific runner in Miami history. At the end of his three-year tenure (1971-73), Hitchens owned Miami’s season and career records for points, rushing touchdowns, rushing attempts and rushing yards. Rollins Moves From The HARDWOOD to The Turf Quinten Rollins joined the Miami football program this spring following a fouryear career with the Miami basketball program. Rollins, who is expected to start at cornerback for the RedHawks, accomplished these feats on the hardwood: • Finished his career ranked second at Miami and 12th in MAC history in steals (214). • One of only 15 players in MAC history to reach 200 steals. • Ranked fourth all-time at Miami in assists (391), seventh in games started (106) and ninth in minutes played (3,448). • Played in 116 career games Difficult Transition Spencer Treadwell must still be having mixed emotions on what has happened at Miami over the past nine months. At this time last season Spencer was being coached by his father, Don Treadwell, who was beginning his third year as the RedHawks’ head coach. Don is now serving as the running backs coach at Kent State, the same position Spencer plays here at Miami. Gearing to Miss Season Miami’s starting quarterback from last season will miss the entire 2014 season with an injury. Austin Gearing, who started Miami’s final four games of the 2013 campaign, finished the year 24-of-54 passing for 188 yards and added 478 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Gearing led Miami in rushing yards last season. Sack Master Bryson Albright leads a young group up front along the defensive line. The junior had 5.0 sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss last season to lead the team. His best game last season came against the eventual MAC Champions, Bowling Green, when he recorded seven tackles and three sacks in the loss. No More Streaking When Miami kicks off the 2014 season it will be without starting safety Brison Burris due to injury. Burris had 75 tackles last season while making 12 starts. The junior has started 23 straight games in his career, the longest active streak on the team. Only Zach Lewis (28) and Dawan Scott (24) have started more games for the RedHawks. Middle Linebacker Machine Kent Kern begins his second year as a full-time starter at middle linebacker for the Miami defense. Kern, who earned second-team All-MAC last year, led the RedHawks with 98 tackles, despite missing one game due to injury. He had five games last season in which he recorded double-digit tackles, including a 15-stop performance versus Cincinnati. Moving on Back Hard to find a player on the Miami RedHawks that has had a bigger change than Joe Donlan. Donlan began the 2013 season as a linebacker, but was moved to tight end midway through the season, seeing several snaps on that side of the ball. This year, Donlan is back on the defensive side of the ball, practicing with the first-team defense at outside linebacker. #42 John Pont Worn by halfback John Pont through three varsity football campaigns, was retired by the Athletic Advisory Council following his senior season in 1951. Pont thus became the first athlete in Miami history to have his jersey retired. -6- Game 1 • Marshall at Miami Travis Prentice’s #41 to Be Retired Travis Prentice (1996-99), will become the fourth RedHawk to have his football jersey retired. Prentice’s #41 will join Ben Roethlisberger’s #7, Bob Hitchens’ #40 and John Pont’s #42 just below the south scoreboard inside Yager Stadium. Prentice will have his jersey retired at halftime versus Eastern Kentucky on Sept. 6, 2014. At the completion of his Miami career, the Louisville, Ky., native owned 35 career and single season Miami records. Prentice would rank first in rushing yards (5,596), rushing attempts (1,138), scoring (468), touchdowns (78) and all-purpose yards (6,118) to go along with many other Miami records. Still to this day, his 5,596 rushing yards rank sixth all-time in NCAA history, behind Ron Dayne (6,397), Ricky Williams (6,279), Tony Dorsett (6,082), DeAngelo Williams (6,026) and Charles White (5,598). “Touchdown Travis” was a three-time first-team All-MAC performer that played in 44 career games (33 starts), finishing with 73 rushing touchdowns, second-most in NCAA history behind Monte Balls’ 77. Despite his 1,138 rushing attempts, the threetime Doak Walker semifinalist lost just two fumbles in his RedHawk career. From Nov. 2, 1996 to Oct. 9, 1999, Prentice recorded 862 consecutive rushing attempts without losing a fumble, which still stands as an NCAA record today. If You Build It... Miami’s Athletic Director, David Sayler, has been busy in his first 20 months, adding several facilities for the department. The newest installment can be seen just north of Yager Stadium. The new Indoor Sports Center will serve as the indoor practice facility for a majority of Miami’s sports teams, including football. Installation is expected to be complete by Christmas. Other facilities in the works/complete are the new weight room at Steve Cady Arena for the ice hockey team (complete), the baseball Legacy Project (has begun) and Millett Hall renovations (almost complete) for basketball and volleyball. ‘Lil John Harbaugh Miami added its ninth member to the Cradle of Coaches Plaza (south endzone) back in April after John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens won his first superbowl. To celebrate the incredible feat, Miami Athletics created a miniature John Harbaugh statue that was given to all season ticket holders for the 2014 football season. PAUL BROWN (`30) was named as the 12th greatest coach of all time by The Sporting News (TSN). Miamians WALTER ALSTON (`35) and BO SCHEMBECHLER (`51) ranked 35th and 36th on the list, while ARA PARSEGHIAN (`49) was selected as sports’ 44th greatest coach. A fifth man with Miami ties, WOODY HAYES, ranked 27th on TSN’s list. Hayes served as Miami’s football coach from 1949-50. The August 3, 2009 publication asked a panel of 118 top coaches, media and sports administrators to choose the Top 50 list. Altogether, only four universities contributed more than one alumnus to the list. Miami’s four alumni topped Alabama (Paul “Bear” Bryant and Bobby Bowden), Minnesota (Bud Wilkinson and Herb Brooks) and Kansas (Dean Smith and Adolph Rupp), which each had two alums ranked among the Top 50. Purdue graduate John Wooden, the famed “Wizard of Westwood”, was ranked as the No. 1 coach of all time. An Ohio native who was a two-year football letter winner (1928-29), Paul Brown is a member of Miami’s “Cradle of Coaches” and excelled as a coach at the collegiate and professional levels. Brown was head coach at Ohio State (1941-43) and led the Buckeyes to their first national title in 1942. Brown then served as head coach at the professional level with the Cleveland Browns (1946-62) and Cincinnati Bengals (1968-75), winning championships in the All-America Football Conference and National Football League. Brown was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1967, and the current home stadium of the Bengals bears his name. Paul PaulBrown Brown Always displaying a calm, professional demeanor, the unflappable Walter Alston managed the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers for 23 seasons (1954-76), winning seven National League pennants and four World Series championships. His squads would win 2,040 games during his tenure, the seventh-highest win total among major league managers. He helped to establish a “Dodger Way,” which many of his former players later used to become successful managers themselves. Paul Brown Walter Alston A member of Miami’s “Cradle of Coaches” and the College Football Hall of Fame, Bo Schembechler was a two-year letter winner (1949-50) and head coach (1963-68) with the Red and White. During his six seasons as head coach, Schembechler led Miami to a 40-17-3 record and back-to-back conference co-championships (1965-66). Schembechler then became the head coach at the University of Michigan (1969-89) and led the Wolverines to 13 Big Ten titles. Paul Brown Bo Schembechler Paul Ara PBrown arseghian Paul Brown Woody Hayes A member of Miami’s “Cradle of Coaches” and the College Football Hall of Fame, Ara Parseghian was a football letter winner (1946-47) before moving to the sidelines as an assistant coach (1950) and head coach (1951-55). During his five seasons as Miami’s head coach, Parseghian compiled a 39-6-1 record and won back-to-back Mid-American Conference Championships (1954-55). Parseghian went on to coach at Northwestern (1956-63) and Notre Dame (1964-74) where he was named National Coach of the Year in 1964. A member of Miami’s “Cradle of Coaches” and the College Football Hall of Fame, Woody Hayes served as the head coach of Miami during the 1949-50 and 1950-51 seasons. In his last year as head coach he led the RedHawks to a 9-1 record and a MAC Championship, and also led his team to a victory in the Salad Bowl. Hayes went on to coach at the Ohio State University (1951-78) where he became a fixture for the Scarlet and Grey and quickly became recognized as one of the greatest coaches of all time. At OSU he compiled a 205-61-10 record (.761) and led the Buckeyes to five national titles, 13 Big Ten championships, and four bowl victories. He is a three-time winner of the College Football Coach of the Year Award. -9- The Sporting News Top 50 Coaches of All Time 1. John Wooden (Purdue) 2. Vince Lombardi (Fordham) 3. (Godby) -12- Game 1 • Marshall at Miami Chuck Martin Head Coach First Season Coaching Record: 74-7 Record at Miami: 0-0 Milliken, 1990 Chuck Martin was named the 36th head football coach in Miami history on Dec. 3, 2013. Martin, who has more than 20 years of collegiate coaching experience, brings six years of head coaching experience to the RedHawk program. He has twice been named the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) National Coach of the Year, earning the honor in 2005 and 2006, and has coached in seven national championship games in the past 13 seasons. In addition to his head coaching experience, Martin has served as a coordinator on both sides of the ball. Of those seven national championship game appearances, he has been a part of four national championship wins, with two titles under his direction as head coach/offensive coordinator and one as a defensive coordinator. Martin spent the past four seasons at Notre Dame, serving as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach (2012-13) and defensive backs/recruiting coordinator (2010-11). In 2012, he orchestrated an offense that played in the BCS National Championship game versus Alabama. In 2011, he was named one of the top 25 recruiters in the nation by ESPN.com and was named to Rivals.com’s Second-Team Assistant Coach Dream Team. In Martin’s two years calling plays, Notre Dame combined to go 20-5 overall and was one of the most balanced offenses in the country, averaging 26.4 points, 170.0 rushing and 235.6 passing per game. Prior to arriving in South Bend, Martin was head coach and offensive coordinator for Grand Valley State University from 2004-2009 and compiled a 74-7 (.914) record, including an impressive 16-4 record in the NCAA Division II Playoffs. He and the Lakers won back-to-back national championships in 2005 and 2006 and finished runner-up in 2009. He directed Grand Valley State to 48 consecutive regular-season victories and 45 straight wins in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). He also guided the Lakers to a Division II record 40-game winning streak from 2005-07. Martin produced seven Associated Press First-Team All-America players as head coach. At GVSU, Martin’s offenses averaged 35.1 points, 208 rushing and 427 total yards per game. The Lakers ranked among the top-25 nationally in total offense in five of six seasons and ranked in the top-27 in scoring offense in all but one season. In that time, his offense scored at least 30 points in 56 of 81 games and scored at least 40 points in 34 contests. Before becoming head coach, Martin served as the defensive coordinator for the Lakers in 2003, helping GVSU win a national championship. Martin’s defense allowed just nine total points in the final three games of the playoff run and among the ranked top-10 nationally in scoring, rushing and total defense that season. Martin served as the defensive backs and outside linebackers coach at GVSU from 2000-02. Prior to arriving in Allendale, Mich., Martin spent time at Eastern Michigan (1998-1999, linebackers), Millikin University (1996-97, defensive coordinator/defensive backs), Wittenberg University (1994-95, linebackers) and Mankato State University (1992-93, graduate assistant/linebackers). While attending Millikin (1986-90), Martin was an All-American safety and was selected as a GTE Academic All-American. He doubled as an All-American place kicker, received Academic All-District honors for the Millikin baseball team and was inducted into the Millikin Hall of Fame in 2008. He graduated in 1990 with a degree in accounting and earned his master’s degree in physical education from Mankato State University in 1993. Martin and his wife Dulcie have two children, Max and Emma. In that span, Laker quarterbacks threw 184 touchdown passes and just 41 interceptions. His offenses were not just about the quarterback. In all six seasons, he produced a 1,000-yard rusher. In four of those seasons, a running back finished as a top-10 rusher in Grand Valley State history. -13- 2013 Game-By-Game Stats Game 1 • Marshall at Miami Combined Stats Game Score First Rushing Passing Tot.
