Born in Paris in 1953, Alain
Kleinmann studied mathematics
before continuing his self-taught
education in painting at the École
des Beaux-Arts. He thus began a
lifelong career that has led him to
participate in exhibitions all over
the world. He lives and works in
Paris.
Alain Kleinmann’s œuvre is one of accumulation, focussed
on memory, documentation, and the passage of time. This
volume constitutes the first monographic retrospective
of his work, spanning his forty-year career. Kleinmann’s
drawings, paintings, sculpture, collages, theatre designs
and projections have been brought together to illustrate
over 500 pages. It opens with a poetic ‘visual preface’
that eases the reader into the world of Alain Kleinmann – a
world in which photographs, books, suitcases, watches,
prams, and other objects found in flea markets are treated
as the ‘survivors’ of a collective past.
Close to his Jewish heritage, Kleinmann seeks to
reconstruct the past by using found objects as elements
of a visual vocabulary, while exploring the tragic loss
memory in the wake of immigration and war. He carefully
arranges and covers each object with layer upon layer
of textures and paints. His bronze sculptures are threedimensional tableaux of objects charged with significance
that appear to be covered by the layers of time. In his
beautifully assembled accumulations, Kleinmann attempts
to reconstitute the past, to build a family photo album for
those who never had one. The result highlights both the
tragedy of loss and the healing power of art.
This volume brings surveys Kleinmann’s work in a nearly
exhaustive compilation that mirrors the accumulative
nature of the works themselves. It compiles elements of
the imagined collective memory he has built over forty
years of artistic research and production.
