Thanksg ivi ng Potluck 2 014
Welcoming the warmth of the holiday season!
Over 350 members of the Doane Stuart Community gathered with family and friends on November 21 for Doane Stuart’s annual Thanksgiving
Potluck Dinner. Home-made and special holiday delicacies were in abundance again this year, and spirits were high as families were faced with the
difficult choice of which dishes to sample first.
FALL CONGÉ 2014
Students were overjoyed the morning of October 31 when an
unexpected Congé was announced! Congé is a special Doane Stuart
tradition passed down from Kenwood Academy (the Sacred Heart
school that merged with the Episcopal Saint Agnes School to form
Doane Stuart in 1975). Seniors plan a surprise day of fun for the entire
school; classes are suspended, and there are organized activities for all
ages.Thank you to the seniors who did an amazing job planning and
executing the special day.
Welcome to the Green Roof!
As part of a special all-school
morning meeting hosted by
Ms. Forster and the Green
Roof class, DS students and
faculty had their first chance
to walk around the completed green roof. Following the
tour the entire School
community gathered in the
Commons to enjoy a Green
Roof cake!
The mission of Doane Stuart is education, for students from every quarter. In a college preparatory context, where the
joy of discovery is valued, Doane Stuart emphasizes serious study, educates to social responsibility, and lays the foundation for a strong faith.

Eighth Grade Spends the Day in the Upper School
Eighth graders will spend Thursday, December 4 visiting the Upper
School. They will have the opportunity of participating in classes, attending Upper School Morning Meeting and enjoying lunch with the
Upper School faculty. Eighth graders are invited to come “out-ofuniform” on December 4.
Saint Nicholas Day
On Saint Nicholas Day, Friday, December 5, everyone in the School
community will put one shoe in the hallway, as we do every year, to
await the arrival of Saint Nicholas, who (with the assistance of some
merry elves) will fill each shoe with candy.
Lower School Holiday Sing-Along
Please be with us at 8:20 a.m. on Friday, December 19, in the
Chapel, as students in Early Childhood through Grade 4 lift our spirits
with holiday songs, as only they can. Come with voices ready to join us
as we sing our holiday favorites.
Kris Kringle Week
A favorite Doane Stuart tradition, Kris Kringle Week will take place
this year from December 15-19. Students and faculty in Grades 2-12
will surprise each other with special treats and clues throughout the
week.
The goal of Kris Kringle week is to be thoughtful and creative, not to
spend lots of money. At the end of the week, gifts will be exchanged at
“Kringle” parties in Lower, Middle and Upper Schools. Watch for
more information.
Upper School Holly Ball - Please note Date Change
Upper School students are busy preparing for Doane Stuart’s traditional semi-formal Holly Ball, which will be held at school at 7:00 p.m.
on Friday, December 12 (please note date change).
Lower, Middle and Upper Band School Recital
Annual Christmas Chapel
On Wednesday, December 17 (snow date: December 18), families
and friends are invited to attend Christmas Chapel, Doane Stuart’s
traditional candlelight celebration of the season, at 5:30 p.m.
Guests are invited to bring a new, unwrapped toy, to be placed under
the tree; toys will be donated to a local charitable organization, Concerns-U of Rensselaer.

Seniors and Parents
Please be sure to keep Ms. Bracken updated as you hear from colleges
regarding admission, and offers of merit aid. Parents can contact Ms.
Bracken at any time to check on the progress of college applications for
their children.
Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors
Want to jump start the college process? Start using Naviance! One of
the fantastic features of Naviance, our online college counseling software, is the ability to create a resume and track your many activities. What is Naviance? Naviance is a tool for students, parents and
Ms. Bracken to streamline many aspects of the college counseling process. Students can research colleges, maintain lists of prospective
schools, track colleges coming to visit Doane Stuart, and much
more. By senior year, Naviance will play an important role in your
applications! It can be easy to forget all things you have done in Upper
School – plays, sports, clubs, community service – if you start keeping
track now, when it comes time to apply to college, you will have an
easy reference! If you would like assistance in using Naviance to create a
resume, please see Ms. Bracken during a free period.
Scholarship Opportunities for Seniors
Join music teachers Mr. Hetko and Ms. Amin for our first band recital
of the year on Monday, December 8 at 6:00 p.m. in the Golub Interfaith
Chapel. The Lower and Middle School bands and the Upper School
Jazz Ensemble look forward to entertaining you!
Another great feature of Naviance is the ability to post and share scholarship opportunities. Ms. Bracken will both e-mail scholarships to seniors, as well as post them on Naviance. Seniors should be checking
Naviance regularly for new scholarship opportunities. Many of the
scholarship applications can be downloaded directly from the Naviance
website, making it even easier to apply.

Financial Aid Information
Tuesday, December 16 - Hanukkah Chapel
Wednesday, December 17 - Christmas Chapel
Lower School Friendship Lunch
Every student applying for financial aid must complete the FAFSA
(Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available
at fafsa.ed.gov, and may be completed after January 1. Some private
schools also require an additional form, the CSS Profile, available now
at profileonline.collegeboard.com. It is critical to check individual
deadlines for your son or daughter’s schools, and ensure you submit all
required paperwork on time. Ms. Bracken strongly recommends that
the FAFSA and CSS Profile be submitted before February 1. If you
have any questions about applying for financial aid, please contact Ms.
Bracken for assistance. Financial aid paperwork is not seen by the College Counseling Office, but Ms. Bracken is happy to serve as a resource
should questions arise.
Important Dates to Remember
The Early Childhood and Kindergarten classes, along with their
families and friends, celebrated Thanksgiving with their own
fabulous feast. Students dressed as Pilgrims and Native Americans joined together to commemorate the spirit of the season.
The students performed some favorite seasonal songs and everyone especially enjoyed the turkey soup made by the students!

January 5 - All applications with 1/16 through 2/15 deadlines due
