GEORGE MASON
2014 MEN’S SOCCER INFORMATION GUIDE
PROGRAM HISTORY
Men’s soccer was one of the first varsity
sports to be offered when the then-George Mason
College began its athletic program in the late
1960s. Since then, it has become one of the most
successful programs among the 22 NCAA Division I
sports currently offered at Mason.
In the 47-year history of George Mason
soccer, the program has a record of 455-317-99 for
a winning percentage of .579. The Patriots have
posted at least 10 victories in 28 of those seasons,
including 14 in a row from 1980-93, and they have
finished a season nationally ranked 10 times (1981,
‘82, ‘84, ‘85, ‘87, ‘88, ‘90, ’92, ’96 and 2008) in the last
26 years. At George Mason Stadium, the team’s
5,000-seat home field which opened for the 1982
season, the Patriots have a sparkling record of 19083-35 (.674 winning percentage).
The program’s most successful period
began in 1979, its first at the NCAA Division I level.
Coach Richard Broad led the Patriots to a 9-9 mark
that season and improved to the tune of a 10-4-3
record and a berth in the ECAC-South championship
game in 1980.
After another impressive record of 12-24 in 1981, a season in which Mason was nationally
ranked for the first time, the program kicked into
high gear in 1982. The Patriots won their first 18
games and were ranked as high as sixth in the nation
(the program’s highest national ranking ever) before
losing to Virginia, 3-2, before 4,500 fans at the new
stadium. Mason came back to avenge that loss in its
first-ever NCAA Tournament game with a 1-0 victory
over the Cavaliers at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville
before falling to eventual national runner-up Duke
in the quarterfinals, 2-0. Mason’s final record of 19-2
set a school record for victories in a season.
Broad, who finished his nine-year tenure
with an overall mark of 88-53-17, saw the Patriots
post a 15-4-3 record in his final season of 1984.
Mason made its second appearance in the NCAA
Tournament that year, the first of six postseason
appearances by the Patriots in a span of seven years.
Gordon Bradley joined the program as
head coach in 1985. He immediately led the Patriots
to a record of 18-4 and a NCAA first-round victory
over Virginia, 1-0, before falling to eventual national
runner-up American in the second round. Mason set
a school record with 80 goals that season. In 1986,
the Patriots again won an NCAA first-round game
with a 2-1 victory over Maryland in overtime, but
lost to Loyola in the second round.
Bradley, who retired after the 2000
season with a 16-year mark of 183-113-35, guided
the Patriots to other NCAA appearances in 1987,
‘88 and ’90. A six-year drought ended in 1996 with
Mason defeating Virginia, 1-0, in the first round
before falling to eventual national champion St.
John’s. Mason’s most recent NCAA Tournament
appearance was in 2008, when current head coach
Greg Andrulis guided the Patriots to a win over Penn
in the first round, 1-0, before falling to eventual
national champion Maryland in the second round.
Mason also appeared in the national tournament in
2006, taking a 1-0 loss to Bucknell in the first round.
The Patriots have an all-time record of 5-10 in 10
NCAA Tournament appearances.
Page 5
Since the inception of the Colonial
Athletic Association in 1984 (it was known as
the ECAC-South for the 1983 and ‘84 seasons
only), Mason has been one of the most dominant
programs in the conference with a league record
of 117-74-26 (.599 winning percentage) and five
shared or outright titles in 26 years. The Patriots also
have tied for the regular season crown twice and
advanced to the CAA Tournament finals five times.
In addition, a total of 74 players have
been selected to the All-CAA first or second
teams, which includes athletes who have received
the honor more than once. John O’Hara, Martin
Dunphy, Mark Pulisic, Ian Carter and Eduardo Lima
earned All-CAA First Team honors three times and
Mike Reynolds, Fred Thompson, Sam Sumo, Joseph
Addo, Greg Franzke, Tamir Linhart, Rich Kotschau
and Scott Thelen each were named to the squad
twice. In addition, Anthony Noreiga garnered a
first team nod in 2005, a feat repeated by Kwame
Adjeman-Pamboe during the Patriots’ 2008 CAA
Championship season. Goalkeeper Sean Kelley
capped his outstanding career with a first-team
selection last season. Linhart received CAA Player
of the Year honors in 1992, as did John Ferrandino
in 1995. Noreiga was named CAA Defender of the
Year in 2005. Also, O’Hara (2001), Damian O’Rourke
(2002) and Sean Kelley (2006) earned Rookie of the
Year laurels.
Mason also can boast of eight NSCAA AllAmericans -- Henry Castaneda, Colin Kerr, Reynolds,
Sumo, Addo, Linhart, Steffen Kraus and Timi
Mulgrew. Castaneda, a record-setting goalkeeper
in the early days of the program, earned NAIA firstteam honors in 1974, while Kerr became the first
Division I All-American as a third-team selection in
1982. Castaneda, Reynolds (1985), Sumo (1985) and
Addo (1992) were each named to the first team.
Kraus (2013) and Mulgrew (2014) earned third team
honors in back-to-back seasons.
Mason ushered in a new era of soccer
in 2013 when the school joined the Atlantic
10 Conference. The Patriots took the A-10 by
storm in its inaugural season, posting a 12-3-6
record en route to earning the 2013 Atlantic 10
Conference Championship title, the first A-10
team championship in school history. The Patriots
proceeded to advance to the second round of the
NCAA Tournament, defeataing former conference
foe William & Mary with a 4-2 advantage in penalty
kicks before falling to seventh-seeded New Mexcio
in the second round, 1-0. Freshman goalkeeper
Steffen Kraus became the first Patriot to earn Atlantic
10 Rookie of the Year honors along with becoming
the seventh to be named an NSCAA All-American..
Kraus also earned a spot on the All-Conference team
(2nd) along with teammates Taylor Washington
(1st), Zak Haapaoja (2nd), Alex Herrera (2nd). Kraus
additoinally earned A-10 All-Rookie honors with
teammate Zach Herstek.

2014 MEN’S SOCCER INFORMATION GUIDE
Greg Andrulis
Head Coach
10th Season • 86-62-25 at Mason
George Mason University’s men’s soccer team welcomed a new head
coach, Greg Andrulis, in 2005, and the new era continues in Mason men’s
soccer with Andrulis at the helm. After a 10-year absence from the NCAA
Division I Men’s Soccer Championship, the Patriots have qualified for the
national tournament three times under the guidance of Andrulis.
Andrulis led Mason into its new conference in 2013, the Atlantic 10. His
team posted a 12-3-6 overall record, 5-0-3 in conference and went on to
defeat Saint Joseph’s, VCU and Saint Louis to win the A-10 Tournament in
the teams’ inaugural season in the conference. The Patriots qualified for
the national tournament for the first time since 2008, defeating William
& Mary in the first round before falling to New Mexico who advanced
to the College Cup. Freshman goalkeeper Steffen Kraus (Third Team)
was named the 7th NSCAA All-American in program history along with
earning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, All-Atlantic 10 Third Team and
A-10 Rookie Team honors among others. Taylor Washington (First), Zak
Haapaoja (Second) and Alex Herrara (Second) also earned All-Conference
honors while Zak Herstek joined Kraus on the All-Rookie Team.
Mason returned to the CAA Tournament in 2012 after posting an 11-6-2 overall record and a 4-5-1 mark in conference action. For their efforts throughout the season, five Patriots took home All-CAA honors, including Taylor Morgan (First), Timi Mulgrew (Second), Alex Herrera and Hugh Roberts (Third), and Ghiles Harmouche (Rookie).
The 2011 campaign saw the Patriots go 7-8-3 overall and 4-6-1 in the CAA. Five players collected All-CAA honors, including Eric Zuehsow, Leo Stolz, Taylor Morgan, Ryan Gracia and Verneri Valimaa. Additionally, Gracia earned NSCAA
Men’s Soccer Scholar All-East Region accolades.
In 2010, for the fourth time in his six seasons at Mason, Andrulis led the team to winning campaign as the Patriots
were 8-7-2 on the year .Four Patriots earned All-CAA honors as Ernesto Marquez was named first-team All-CAA, Eric
Zuehsow was named second-team All-CAA and Eber Martinez was named third-team All-CAA. Additionally, Alex Herrera was named to the CAA All-Rookie Team.
In 2009, Andrulis led Mason to its second consecutive season with double-digit victories as the Patriots posted a
10-7-1 overall record. Included among those 10 wins was a 2-0 shutout of second-ranked Maryland on Sept. 29 at

the 1996 season with a 1-0 victory over Penn in the opening round at George Mason Stadium before falling to eventual national champion Maryland in the second round in College Park, Md. Mason won 14 matches for the first time
since 1996 and won eight straight before the second-round match at Maryland to finish the season ranked in the
top-25 in the nation in the final College Soccer News poll. Following the season, standout forward Kwame AdjemanPamboe, a First-Team All-CAA and NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region selection, was selected in the second round of
the MLS SuperDraft by the Colorado Rapids.
The 2006 squad showcased Andrulis’ first recruiting class, which included four athletes with national team playing experience, as well as two individuals who were named to the ‘Top 100 Freshman to Keep an Eye on in 2006’ by
College Soccer News. The newcomers lived up to those high expectations, helping the Patriots improve to 12-6-3 in
Andrulis’ second year with the program, including a 7-3-1 mark in the CAA. The team was nationally ranked during
the season and won nine consecutive matches. Mason reached the finals of the CAA Championships, falling to Hofstra in a penalty kick shootout, before moving on to the NCAA Tournament as an at-large selection, the first time the
Patriots reached the tournament in 10 years.
A number of Patriots received individual accolades for their performance during the 2006 campaign. Goalkeeper
Sean Kelley was named the CAA Rookie of the Year and was a Second-Team All-CAA selection, as well as a member
of the CAA All-Rookie Team and All-Tournament Team. College Soccer News named the first-year performer to its AllFreshman First Team and Kelley was also named Third-Team All-South Atlantic Region. Senior defender Fabien Lewis
joined Kelley on the All-South Atlantic Region Third Team and was also named Second-Team All-CAA, while Edgar
was named to the CAA All-Rookie Team.
In his first year with the Patriots, the team garnered a 7-7-4 overall record, which included a 3-4-4 mark in the Colonial Athletic Association. Mason garnered five shutouts on the year, including a 1-0 overtime victory against Penn
State at Mason Stadium on Sept. 24. Andrulis coached Anthony Noreiga in his final year with the Patriots. Noreiga
ended up being named the 2005 CAA Defender of the Year and also earned All-CAA First Team honors. In addition,
seniors Teba McKnight and Karim Manneh were named to the all-conference second team.
Andrulis came to Mason with a combined 24 years of collegiate and professional coaching experience. In 2004,
Andrulis was named Major League Soccer Coach of the Year and the team was 49-43-32 in his four plus seasons with
the Columbus Crew. In addition, the Crew had a 2-4-3 mark in the playoffs.
Andrulis joined the Crew in MLS’s inuagural season, 1996, as an assistant to Tom Fitzgerald and was named interim
coach midway though the 2001 season, after Fitzgerald was fired. He was given the job full-time following that
season after guiding the Crew to a 12-4-4 record in the remaining games in 2001. Andrulis earned his first-ever MLS
Coach of the Year award in 2004. He guided the Crew to the top of the Eastern Conference standings and garnered
the Crew their first ever Supporters Shield in 2004, which is awarded annually to the team with the most points in either conference. The Crew’s 49 points is also the highest regular-season point total in team history. The team started
the year poorly, but Andrulis took the Crew on a league-record 18-game unbeaten streak, and a 12-win season
against only five losses. The loss total was the lowest number in the league and team history and the 12 wins also
marked the second-highest total in the MLS that year behind Kansas City’s 14.
In 2003, the Crew advanced to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup and was the talk of MLS in bolting
to a 3-0-1 start in league play. But with key injuries to four of the teams’ top performers, the team missed the playoffs
for just the second time in club history, finishing with a 10-12-8 record. The Crew went 7-4-5 with those key starters,
but was 3-8-3 with players sidelined.

In 2002, Andrulis led the club to its first title, the US Open Cup on Oct. 24. The Crew defeated the newly crowned MLS
Cup-champion L.A. Galaxy, 1-0, in the U.S. Open Cup final at Crew Stadium, to claim the prestigious piece of hardware. The U.S. Open Cup is the oldest soccer tournament in America.
Prior to joining Columbus, he was the head coach of Wright State University from 1985 to 1996. He posted a 12-year
record of 134-72-28. His best season came in 1988 when he led the Raiders to a 16-4-2 mark.
Starting Mid-Continent league play in 1991, he went 24-18-5 against conference foes. During his tenure, he coached
two All-Americans, 21 All-Mideast selections, 28 All-Ohio players and two recipients of the Carl Dale Memorial Award
given to the top Ohio players at their positions. All-Americans Hylton Dayes and Rob Campbell have both been inducted into the WSU Hall of Fame; Dayes in 1991 and Campbell in 1999. Andrulis was inducted into the WSU Athletics Hall of Fame on May 28, 2002, becoming the Hall’s 37th member. Recently, Andrulis was inducted into the Litchfield High School Hall of Fame and the Eastern Connecticut Hall of Fame.
The Litchfield, Conn., native earned his Bachelor of Science degree in psychology in 1980 from Eastern Connecticut
State University. After spending a year as an assistant coach at his alma mater, he moved to Springfield College in
Massachusetts where he coached the junior varsity and freshman teams while earning a master’s degree in counseling. He then spent three years as an assistant coach at Clemson University where he helped the Tigers win the NCAA
Championship in 1985.
