She is also Adjunct Professor at the University of Tampere and the University of Oulu. In the early 1990s, she was involved in starting the Nordic-Russian Femina Borealis network in the Barents region; in the late 1990s-early 2000s, she worked as the Head of Research at the Nordic Institute for Women’s Studies and Gender Research (Oslo) and the Nordic Visiting Professor at the Nevsky Institute (St. Petersburg). Since the end of the 1990s, Saarinen has coordinated several Nordic-NW Russian research networks and projects such as NCRB - A Network for Crisis Centres in the Barents Region (1999-2002, 20022005) and been Principal Investigator of the Finnish teams in EU projects in the field of migration and gender violence: Primts – Prospects for Integration of Migrants from “Third Countries” (coordinated by the Peace Institute, Ljubljana, 2008-2010); Speak Out! Empowering Migrant, Refugee and Ethnic Minority Women against Gender Violence (the University of Padua, 2011-2013); and RAGE – Hate speech and populist othering in Europe: Through the racism, age, gender looking glass (the University of Leicester, 2013-2015). Worth a note is that in her student days at the turn of the 1960s-1970s, Saarinen worked in seasonal summer jobs in Sweden, Germany, England and Norway and thus became herself acquainted with problems related to precarious work in foreign countries. In 2004-2007,Saarinen led the Nordic-Russian RWN project on Nordic Russian Women as Immigrants in ´Norden´, and in 2008-2010/2012, the Finnish-NW Russian-US WGA - Welfare, Gender and Agency umbrella project, which were both carried out at the Aleksanteri Institute. Saarinen has focused on feminist methodologies, women’s mobilization locally and transnationally, gender violence, and migration. She has published in Finnish and Nordic journals and more internationally. She is co-editor of Welfare, Gender and Agency in Post-socialist Countries (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2011); Builders of a New Europe. Women Immigrants from Eastern Transregions (Kikimora, online 2012); and Women and Transformation in Russia (Routledge, 2014).
