Jean-Charles Abbatucci is known to drive his tractor out to
his vineyards and play traditional Corsican polyphonic songs over
loudspeakers for the vines benefit! His vines come from cuttings of
indigenous grapes, sourced decades ago high up in the isolated and
mountainous interior of the island. A direct descendant of Napoléon
Bonaparte, Jean-Charles Abbatucci grows wines that are as delicious as
they are unique.

Organics & Biodynamics
‘These wines had a purity, a clarity, an undeniable energy to them that
absolutely blew me away. Sure, these could just have been exceptional
wines that happened to be Biodynamic - but I was prepared to believe they
were exceptional because they were Biodynamic.’ Max Allen, the leading
commentator in Australia and a growing voice globally on organic and
BD farming.
Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner (part time yodeler) is the man
credited with outlining the basic principals of what is now known today as
‘biodynamic (BD) farming’.
In 1924 Mr Steiner gave a series of lectures to local farmers, after there had
been great concern with the state of their farms. They had noted that due
to chemical use, the soil was losing life and the health and quality of crops
and livestock was deteriorating.
Biodynamic Preparation 500
‘Organic’ and ‘Biodynamic’ - widely used phraseology, but what does it
all mean? and, perhaps most importantly, how does it affect the grapes that
make the wine we love to drink?
Organic farming can be defined as farming without the use of any
artificial chemicals (fertilizers, pestisides, fungisides and herbicides).
COW HORN MANURE, the most widely used preparation in BD
farming. It is made by filling a cow horn with cow manure and burying
it below ground throughout the winter. The following spring the horn is
recovered and the decomposed cow manure is mixed with rainwater, before
being sprayed on the vineyard. Improves soil structure and microbiological
activity.
Preparation 500 is the cornerstone of Biodynamics (there are eight others ).
Biodynamic farming takes this notion slightly further, Vanya Cullen
of Cullen Wines puts it well: ‘...biodynamic viticulture is a philosophy
combining the maintenance of sustainable soil fertility and the recognition
of the link between plant growth and the rhythms of the cosmos. It... treats
the vineyard as a living system, which interacts with the environment
to build a healthy living soil that helps to nourish the vines and general
environment.’
20
Take from Biodynamics what you want….
Whether going all out and worshipping the electromagnetic forces of the
earth or simply taking some of Steiner’s BD tecniques and ideas created
all those years ago, to help you farm smarter and better, it’s up to you... But
what we do know is that pumping chemicals into the earth, from which
we harvest our food and, importantly, our grapes, isn’t sustainable especially if we’d like to avoid all ending up like Ozzy Osbourne.
21
Things are happenin’, and Australia is where it’s at! There’s young
blood taking winemaking to a new level. Open minded, well read and
traveled souls that don’t just drink their own wines, but the great wines of
the world. These winemakers are changing the face of wine in this country.

Cécile Tremblay, started making wine under her own label in 2003. In
a short period she has built a great reputation for pure, refined and elegant
pinot noir from vineyards that are farmed biodynamically. Oh, she’s also

Giovanni Rosso is small, family-owned producer in the heart of the
Barolo commune of Serralunga d’Alba in Piedmonte. The vineyards are
hand picked and vinification is with ambient yeasts. Elevage takes place in
large old oak casks. All wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered to present
an unblemished reflection of the terroir of Serralunga d’Alba. We are
extremely proud to present the wines below.

in Austria’s Burgenland region, which is at the eastern extremity of Austria
bordering with Hungary. Gerhard and Brigitte Pittnauer have farmed the
vineyards biodynamicaly since 2006 and specialize in the native Austrian
grapes St Laurent and Blaufränkisch. The single vineyard Rosenberg
bottling is incrediably mineral and complex. Taste and believe!

R. Lopez de Heredia. At Sixpenny we love producers who make wine
the traditional way. Producers who haven’t been swept up in modern fads
and who grow wines that have a sense of place and personality.
R. Lopez de Heredia is the epitome of traditional Rioja. Large, old
American oak barrels are used and the wines are aged for considerable
time before release, to ensure you get it when it’s ready. Sit back and
enjoy the journey to one of Spain’s most famous and historic wine regions.
SALUD!
Ruggabellus. Abe Gibson’s wines are everything that is great about the
Barossa. Grenache, Shiraz, Cinsault and Mataro vinified with no additions
in a fresh and elegant style. This is the future. Drink it!
