On the morning of 6 June 1944, 47 Royal Marine Commando landed on ‘Gold Beach’ near
Asnelles and marched 20 km behind enemy lines in order to liberate Port en Bessin. On the
70th anniversary, we will be retracing the Commando’s route and telling the story of their
mission as well as the courageous actions of the French community who helped them.
Le matin le 6 juin 1944, les commandos britanniques ont débarqué sur la plage de Gold, près
d'Asnelles, puis ont entrepris une marche d'environ 20 kilomètres, derrière les lignes
ennemies, avec comme objectif la libération de Port-en-Bessin. Nous allons suivre les pas du
47e Commando et découvrir (en français et en anglais) l'histoire de cette opération militaire
et les actions courageuses des français qui ont aidé les Royal Marines.

The Route/L'itinéraire
The walk follows the approximate route taken by 47 Royal Marine Commando on 6/7 June
1944. Leaving from Asnelles, it goes inland via Le Carrefour, La Rosière, Longues, Mont
Cavalier and Escures before heading into Port En Bessin. The route is about 20km. A map is

La marche suivra l'itinéraire (approximatif) emprunté par le 47 Royal Marine Commando le
6/7 Juin 1944. Partant d'Asnelles, elle passera à l'intérieur des terres par Le Carrefour, La
Rosière, Longues, Mont Cavalier et Escures avant d'entrer dans Port-en-Bessin. Elle sera

Picnic/Provisions / Pique-nique/Provisions
We will stop for a picnic lunch (bring your own) at L’Abbeye Sainte Marie near Longues. There
are no shops on route. Walkers should bring there own water.
Nous arrêtant pour un déjeuner en pique-nique (à apporter à vous) à L’Abbeye Sainte-Marie de
Longues.. Il n’y a pas des magasins en route. Les marcheurs devraient apporter leur propre
eau.
Transport
A coach has been organised to bring walkers from Port En Bessin to Asnelles in the morning
(08h15) and back again in the evening (18h30). Seats are limited so please make a
reservation as soon as possible. It leaves from the main car park by the harbour (parking is
free). Walkers that travel direct to Asnelles in the morning would need to rely on their own
arrangements to return to Asnelles in the evening.
Un car a été organisé pour transporter les marcheurs pré-enregistrés de Port-en-Bessin à
Asnelles le matin (08h15) et encore le soir de la marche (18h30). Les places sont limitées
donc s'il vous plaît faire une reservation toute de suite. Rendez-vous sur le parking principal
de l'avant-port de Port-en-Bessin (parking gratuit).

Access and Security/ Accès et Sécurité
For security reasons, there will be significant traffic restrictions from 06h00 to 18h00 on 6
June. See http://www.the70th-normandy.com/dedicated-areas/traffic/?lang=en.
If driving within the restricted zone, an official windcreen sticker is required either from the
Mayor of the commune in which you are staying or, if staying outside the RTZ, from the
Prefecture at Caen. Please note the deadline for application to the latter is 30 May.

Route Conditions / Conditions de l'Itinéraire
The topography is mostly flat with some shallow hills and slopes. There are steeper sections
at Le Buhot and at near Escures but these are over relatively short distances. The route is
both on- and off-road and may be muddy.
La topographie est essentiellement plate, avec quelques petites collines, et quelques côtes
plus raides (notamment à Le Buhot et vers Escures), mais ceci sur des distances relativement
courtes. Le parcours est à la fois sur- et hors-route et peut être boueux.
Weather / Le Temps
If the weather is very bad, the walk may be cancelled at short notice. If so, we will do our
best to contact registered walkers in the morning by text message or email.
Si le temps est très mauvais, la marche pourrait être annulée à la dernière minute. Si tel était
le cas, nous ferions de notre mieux pour contacter les marcheurs inscrits dans la matinée par
sms ou email.
Age group / Groupe d'âge :
Adults and young people aged 12 years and above. Young people under the age of 16 should
be accompanied by an adult.
Adultes et jeunes de 12 ans et plus. Les jeunes de moins de 16 ans doivent être
accompagnés d'un adulte.
Tariff / Tarif:
Free, but walkers would be asked to make a small donation to contribute to the cost of the
coach transport.
Gratuit, mais les marcheurs seront invités à participer aux frais de transport en car.
