Downton Abbey on WGBH’s Masterpiece—the top
PBS drama of all time—returns for its fifth season on
Sunday, January 4, at 9pm (page 9), and WGBH’s Rebecca Eaton,
Masterpiece executive producer, promises it was worth the wait.
It’s 1924. The United Kingdom has its first Labour Party prime minister.
The radio is the latest miracle of the age. And Downton’s traditional ways are
besieged on all fronts. “The new season is about change, secrets and love—
brilliantly constructed by series creator and writer
Julian Fellowes,” says Rebecca. “There are a number
of significant characters in Downton, and many
were there from the very first episode. Julian keeps
the story arcs interwoven throughout the hour, the
season and the years.
“Mary is a beautiful, wealthy, marriageable
widow, and we all hope for resolution there,” says
Rebecca with a smile. “Edith has a big secret, and
how long can she keep it? And, of course, there are Anna and Mr. Bates and
their continuing jeopardy.”
But Rebecca is smiling about more than just Downton Abbey. This year,
Masterpiece is increasing its footprint on Sunday nights by 50 percent—
adding 20 new hours of programs—starting with the premiere of Grantchester
(page 15). The series stars Robson Green (Reckless) as Inspector Geordie
Keating and James Norton (Death Comes to Pemberley) as Sidney Chambers,
a young, jazz-loving vicar who gets involved in solving murders because, as
he says, “People tell me things.”
“The expansion of Masterpiece is kind of a television miracle,” says
Rebecca, who has led the series since 1985. “It’s a tremendous affirmation of
the material, the work of our British partners, the loyalty and support of our
viewers, and of WGBH and PBS. They stuck with our series through some
thin years in terms of funding, and that just does not happen in commercial
television.”
And thanks to you, there are many more Masterpieces to come. In April,
mark your calendar for Wolf Hall, based on Hilary Mantel’s award-winning
novels. And this fall, look for Indian Summers, an epic drama about the end
of the Raj, British rule in India. Rebecca also assures us that more Sherlocks
are in the works.
More superb scripts. More brilliant acting. More great drama. And it all
happens because of your generous annual support.

Downton Is Back
The wait is over! Downton
Abbey returns for a fifth season
on WGBH’s Masterpiece Classic.
When we rejoin the Crawleys
on their country estate, it is
1924, Britain has elected its
first Labour prime minister (to
the earl’s dismay) and Victorian
morals are fading everywhere,
even in the Yorkshire countryside. Tune in for love triangles, onerous
secrets and a range of disruptive visitors, including impoverished
Russian aristocrats and a Scotland Yard detective who won’t take no
for an answer.

Aristocratic Etiquette
Go behind the scenes of Downton
Abbey with historical advisor
Alastair Bruce, who also occasionally appears in the series—when
not busy serving as a colonel in the
Territorial Army, a herald to Queen
Elizabeth and an equerry to Prince
Edward. Bruce reveals how and why
the aristocratic set dined, dressed,
married and generally behaved as
they did in 1900s Britain. Enjoy
interviews with cast members, including Hugh Bonneville, Michelle
Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern and Joanne Froggatt.

invention. The virtually

Sinkholes Explained
In Florida in February 2013, the ground opened and swallowed half a
house, killing a man as he slept. A month later, a golfer in Illinois survived an 18-foot fall when the course caved in beneath his feet. Both
were victims of sinkholes, a hazard
that lurks wherever limestone bedrock is found. With video of falling
sinkholes and commentary from
leading geologists, WGBH’s Nova
investigates how and why the
earth’s surface can collapse.

Once a prosperous mining community, Rich Hill, MO, began to decline after

neighbors who regard these
hopeful newcomers as dangerous delinquents. Filmed

Eric in the Evening
A Tribute to Dr. King
Consider Yourself a Source
WGBH News wants to hear from you. Because you have the potential to bring
greater depth to an important local story or to uncover a story that would
otherwise go unreported.
How will the journalists at WGBH News reach you and your fellow audience members on radio, television and the Internet? Through the Public
Insight Network (PIN), an online resource that connects journalists to residents
of the communities they cover.
“PIN helps WGBH News become more engaged
with and connected to Boston and the surrounding
areas,” says WGBH managing director of news Ted
Canova. “We’re asking our listeners to consider themselves sources with knowledge and expertise about
what’s going on in their community. We want them to
tell us about the compelling issues that need to be
reported on.”
Go to publicinsightnetwork.org to sign up and participate for free.
You’ll be asked about your interests and areas of expertise, and when there’s
an issue that applies to you, you’ll be contacted over email to share your
perspective.
“I worked with PIN while at Minnesota Public Radio, and we had local
listeners living in Japan when Fukushima occurred,” Canova says. “Those
listeners reached out to us and within minutes, they were live on our air
during continuous coverage of the nuclear accident.”
PIN has produced great results for WGBH News as well, helping Kirk
Carapezza and Mallory Noe-Payne tackle a sensitive issue with care as they
incorporated responses from a number of sources to tell the story of Mount
Holyoke College’s new policy on transgender applicants. WGBH News is

99.5 WCRB
Ease into 2015
By Anthony Rudel 99.5 WCRB Station Manager
From everyone at WCRB to
everyone in your world,
Happy New Year!
May 2015 be filled with
happiness, joy and more
great music than ever
before! (Now that’s a wish
we can all get behind.)
Let’s begin at the
beginning. For New Year’s
Day morning, WCRB has prepared a special blend of
music designed to help you
ease into the new year.
Every piece on our playlist
will convey a sense of calm
beauty. So pour that extra
cup of coffee, settle back
and welcome 2015 with the best music.
We’ll then spend the afternoon falling in love. Each member of the
WCRB staff will tell you about the piece of music that made them fall in love
with classical music. It will give you some insight into the emotional power
of classical music, and it will be a pleasure to listen to!
When the workweek resumes, be sure to tune in host Lynnsay Maynard
weekday afternoons at 3pm for four hours of music chosen to carry you
through the low ebb of the day and into your drive home. Plus, you’ll enjoy
the special features that are part of her show.
On Mondays, Lynnsay (who’s a passionate reader) will be looking at
what’s new in the book world; on Tuesdays, she’ll challenge you with a trivia
question; Wednesdays, Lynnsay gets the person on the street’s take on a

day…find out what’s worth
seeing and savor a great
piece of film music; Fridays
focus on the perfect pairing:
wine, weekends and music.
It’s always a music-filled,
fun afternoon with Lynnsay,
only on WCRB.
Also of note this month
is the WCRB Sunday Night
Special on January 18, at
7pm. Our special pays
tribute to Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. on the eve of the
holiday named for the civil
rights leader. The Boston Children’s Chorus and talented maestro Anthony
Trecek-King will share gorgeous choral music, recorded for broadcast during
last year’s Martin Luther King Day concert. It’s the kind of special you can
hear only on WCRB.
You can be sure we will mark the end-of-month birthdays of Mozart and
Schubert with some special programming celebrating these two giants. And
finally, WCRB’s Sunday Night at the Opera for January will present exceptional
performances of Dvorak’s Rusalka (1/4), Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos (1/11),
Rossini’s La Cenerentola (1/18) and Massenet’s Cendrillon (1/25) in a series of
operas about myths and fairy tales.
As always, there’s a rich variety of music available 24/7 on WCRB. Make
us a part of your life every day, and thanks for listening.

WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station
See You at the Pub
By Mindy Todd, WCAI host and managing director for editorial
Pub Nights are back! After a brief hiatus, WCAI’s popular off-season gettogethers are returning this month to a pub near you.
“Listeners, supporters and friends of the station let us know that they
really missed not having Pub Nights last year,” says WCAI Director of
Development Sarah Tribuzio. “We got the message, and we’re responding
this year with a bunch of events throughout our region.”
The tradition dates back to 2004, when Pub Nights started as a cure for
the cabin fever that spreads across the Cape, Coast and Islands during the
quiet winter months. The events are opportunities for listeners to chat with
WCAI’s on-air hosts and contributors and get to know fellow public radio
fans, while enjoying a pint and some good food.
WCAI staff enjoy the evenings as much as our listeners. “It’s a pleasure
to meet the listeners and supporters who make our jobs possible,” says All
Things Considered host Steve Junker. “We all love what we do, and it’s a great
networking opportunity to get insight and ideas about our programming.”
“People are always so happy to see us and to talk about the local issues
they care about,” says Sean Corcoran, WCAI’s News Director. “They want to
