Letter From the Executive Director
In America, New Year’s celebrations are a time for singing “Auld Lang Syne,” sharing
a kiss at midnight and eating black-eyed peas. But what about other corners of the
globe? Here are some unique ways the rest of the world celebrates.
Denmark: For Danes, it’s customary to throw old plates and glasses at friends’ front
doors! The gesture is actually welcomed — a heaping pile of broken dishes on a home’s
doorstep is considered lucky, because it shows that those inside have many friends.
Philippines: Filipinos wear polka-dotted clothing and eat round-shaped foods during
their festivities. The circular shapes represent coins and are believed to bring prosperity.
Spain: In Spain, it’s tradition to quickly eat 12 grapes — one as each hour chimes at
midnight — to bring good luck for each month of the coming year.
Japan: Celebrating in Japan often involves dressing as the New Year’s zodiac animal
and attending the local temple, where bells ring 108 times, a sacred number in
Japanese culture.
South Africa: Rather than party hats, revelers in South Africa should probably don hard
hats due to the custom of throwing old furniture and appliances out windows onto the
streets below!
On behalf of the entire staff, I would like to extend my heartfelt greetings to you and
your family for a very happy New Year!
Fresh Choices for Citrus Fruit
When most of us think of the tart and tangy citrus family, the usual choices come to
mind — oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit. But these popular fruits have some
lesser-known cousins worth tasting. Here are a few:
Pummelos: Similar to grapefruit, the pummelo is larger and has a sweeter taste. It’s the
largest citrus fruit and can grow up to 12 inches wide. When shopping for pummelos,
look for those that feel heavy and have firm, thin skin.

Fun Facts About Elvis
While fans may always remember him as a youthful heartthrob, Elvis Presley would
have celebrated his 80th birthday on Jan. 8. To celebrate this milestone, here’s some
trivia about the entertainer known as the King of Rock and Roll.
He was a twin — Elvis’ twin brother, Jesse Garon Presley, died at birth. His mother,
Gladys, claimed that because of this, Elvis had the energy of two people.
Elvis as Tony? — Film director Robert Wise originally wanted Elvis to star as Tony, the
male lead in the hit musical “West Side Story.” But Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis’ business
manager, felt the role wasn’t right for the star.
He pitched one product — Though his likeness has been used in countless ads and
promotions, Elvis himself made just one product commercial during his entire career.
In 1954, he recorded a radio jingle for Southern Maid Donuts, a favorite of the King.
He had presidential DNA — Various genealogy studies show Elvis was distantly
related to two U.S. presidents, Abraham Lincoln and Jimmy Carter.

Blood oranges: With a reddish-orange skin and a surprisingly deep red interior,
this citrus fruit is described as having an intense orange flavor with a hint of fresh
raspberry. It can be eaten plain, or used in salads, juice, or other recipes in place of traditional oranges.
Kumquats: Similar in size and shape to a large olive, the bright orange kumquat is unique among citrus fruits because it’s
typically eaten with the peel on, like a grape. Its skin has a sweet flavor, while the flesh is tart.
All citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C and have beneficially high levels of flavonoids, which have anticancer properties and may
improve blood flow, reducing the risk of heart disease.
Food Funnies
Losing weight and eating healthy are common New Year’s
resolutions. Laugh off some calories with these food funnies.
• The toughest part of a diet isn’t watching what you eat.
It’s watching what other people eat.
• One way to lose weight is by skipping — snacks
and dessert.
• It’s not the minutes spent at the table that put on weight.
It’s the seconds.
• They say the best way to lose weight is to eat all you want
of everything you don’t like.
• After listening to several bedtime stories, a young boy
said to his father: “Snow White was poisoned by an apple,
Jack found a giant at the top of a beanstalk, and just look
what happened to Alice when she ate a mushroom. And
you wonder why I won’t eat fruits and vegetables.”
