The top-ranked California women’s swimming & diving team returns home to
Spieker Aquatics Complex for two of its final three dual meets of the year this weekend, with the Golden Bears hosting No. 12 USC Friday and No. 13 UCLA Saturday.
Swimming for Friday’s meet will start at 2 p.m. and the meet will be televised
on the Pac-12 Networks with Jason Knapp, Amy Van Dyken (swim analyst) and
Michelle Mitchell (diving analyst) calling the action. Saturday’s Cal-UCLA dual will
begin at 12 noon.
Cal is coming off a sweep of Arizona State and Arizona in the desert last week.
The Bears won 12 of 16 events, including three victories apiece by Elizabeth Pelton
and Missy Franklin, in a 197.5-102.5 triumph at ASU Jan. 23. A day later, the Bears
emerged with a 157-143 victory at No. 14 Arizona, claiming the final two events 400 IM and 200 free relay - to clinch the meet.
Cal split its two competitions with USC and UCLA last year. On a visit to Los Angeles, the Bears fell at then-No. 5 USC, 180.5-119.5 before rebounding to upend
UCLA, 183.5-116.5.
Cal’s final dual this season will be Saturday, Feb. 14 when the Bears host Stanford. The meet will also air live on the Pac-12 Networks.
BEAR NECESSITIES: CAL'S TOP STORYLINES
• BEARS RANKED NO. 1 IN NATIONAL POLL
Cal and Georgia are tied for the No. 1 position in the
latest CSCAA rankings (through Jan. 15). The Bears
first moved into the top spot following the Georgia
Invitational, despite finishing second to the host
Bulldogs (who scored points with diving while Cal’s
divers remained in Berkeley to train). The Bears
started the year in fourth and moved to fifth before
jumping to No. 1.
• PELTON: PAC-12 SWIMMER OF THE MONTH
Junior Elizabeth Pelton was named the Pac-12
Swimmer of the Month for December after posting
NCAA-leading times in both the 200-yard backstroke
and 200-yard individual medley at the Georgia
Invitational. She won the 200 back in 1:49.00 and
the 200 IM in 1:52.93. In addition, she was runnerup in the 200 free to teammate Missy Franklin with
a time of 1:43.13, which is No. 3 in the country. She
also posted the No. 3 time among NCAA swimmers
in the 100 back (51.31). On the 800 free relay,
Pelton swam the anchor leg, leading the Bears
to victory in a time (6:55.95) that is more than
five seconds ahead of any other collegiate relay
to date. This is the second-career Swimmer of
the Month honor for Pelton and the 13th overall
for Cal, the most of any Pac-12 school since the
award’s inception.
• 26 SWIMS RANKED AMONG TOP 8
Cal enters this weekend’s competition with 26
swims that rank among the top eight in the
country in their respective events, including
four that are best in the nation. Junior Elizabeth
Pelton owns claim to the top spot in the NCAA
in both the 200 back (1:49.00) and 200 IM
(1:52.93), while sophomore Missy Franklin is
No. 1 in the 200 free (1:41.23) and the 800
free relay’s time of 6:55.95 is more than five
seconds ahead of any other team. The Bears

are particularly strong in the 200 free and 100

the country.
Cal’s 26 top-8 swims lead the NCAA by a wide
margin, with Georgia second with 17, followed by
Virginia (16), Stanford (14) and Texas (9).

Six Golden Bears - three past, three future competed for the United States at the FINA ShortCourse World Championships Dec. 3-7 in Doha,
Qatar. The list featured alumnae Natalie Coughlin,
Caitlin Leverenz and Madison Kennedy, as well as
incoming freshmen Kathleen Baker, Amy Bilquist
and Abbey Weitzeil. Together, they contributed to
medals in four different relays. In particular, the
silver-medal-winning 4x50m free relay featured a
Golden Bear slant in the final as all four members
- Kennedy, Weitzeil, Coughlin, Bilquist - had Cal
connections (and Baker swam in the prelims).
Individually, Baker was sixth in the 100m back,
Kennedy took fourth in the 50m free and Leverenz
was sixth in the 400 IM.
• 11 BEARS NAMED TO USA SQUADS
Eleven Golden Bears have been chosen to
represent the United States in international
competition next summer with spots on the 2015
World Championships, 2015 Pan American Games
and 2015 World University Games teams.
Three current members of the program, plus
three incoming recruits, will be heading to Kazan,
Russia, next Aug. 2-9 for the World Championships.
Sophomore Missy Franklin, who captured a record
six gold medals at the 2013 World meet, is slated
to compete in four individual events – 100m and
200m back and 100m and 200m free – and could
be added to any of three relay squads. Franklin won
both backstrokes and the 200m free, in addition to
gold in the 400m and 800m free relay and 400m
medley relay, in 2013.
In addition, junior Rachel Bootsma will race in the
50m back after capturing the U.S. title at the Phillips
66 National Championships this past summer, and
freshman Cierra Runge qualified in the 400m free
and for the 800m free relay.
The Cal newcomers going to Russia are: Kathleen
Baker (100m back), Katie McLaughlin (200m fly)
and Abbey Weitzeil (400m free relay).
The Pan American Games will be held July 1418, 2015, in Toronto and will feature Cal alumnae
Natalie Coughlin (50m and 100m free) and Caitlin
Leverenz (200m and 400m IM).
Finally, the U.S. World University Games roster
will include current Bears Bootsma (100m back),
senior Melanie Klaren (200m back), sophomore
Celina Li (200m IM) and junior Elizabeth Pelton
(100m back), plus Weitzeil (50m free, 100m free).
• TERI McKEEVER ON WORLDS STAFF
Cal head coach Teri McKeever earned another
honor from USA Swimming when she was named
an assistant coach for the women’s team that will
compete at the 2015 World Championships in
Kazan, Russia.
McKeever served as head coach of the women’s
team for the Pan Pacific Championships this past
summer - two years after being the head coach for
Team USA at the 2012 Olympics, She has also been
an assistant coach at the World Championships
four previous times.
• CAL ADDS 4 OF NATION’S TOP 5 RECRUITS
Four of the top five recruits in the country, including
a trio of U.S. National team members who will
compete at the 2015 World Championships,
highlight a six-member California women’s
swimming & diving recruiting class announced
Nov. 13. Joining the Golden Bears for the 2015-16
season are Kathleen Baker, Amy Bilquist, Jennifer
Campbell, Katie McLaughlin, Phoebe Lamay and
Abbey Weitzeil.
Baker, in the 100m back, McLaughlin, in the
200m fly, and Weitzeil in the 400m free relay, will
represent Team USA at the World Championships
next summer in Kazan, Russia. All three also swam
at the Pan Pacific Championships in Australia,
the top international competition of 2014, earlier
this year. Bilquist, meanwhile, captured five total
medals, including four gold, at the 2014 Junior Pan
Pacific Championships. Campbell is a local product
out of Palo Alto who is a two-time section champion
in the 200-yard free, and Lamay finished eighth on
the 1-meter springboard at the 2014 national diving
championships.
According to swimswam.com, Weitzeil is
considered the nation’s No. 2 recruit, with Baker

• 6 STRAIGHT YEARS AMONG NCAA TOP 3
With a third-place showing at the 2014 NCAA
Championships last March, Cal has now finished
among the top three teams in the country six years
in a row. The streak started with the Bears’ first
national crown in 2009. They followed up with third
in 2010, back-to-back titles in 2011 and ‘12 and
a runner-up showing in 2013 before last year’s
result. In 2014, Cal also came home with a pair
of individual titles with Missy Franklin setting an
American record on her way to victory in the 200
free, and the quartet of Rachael Acker, Caroline
Piehl, Elizabeth Pelton and Franklin winning the
800 free relay.

and 2:15.29 in the 200), while Kastler swept the
1-meter and 3-meter springboards.
• CAL FALLS TO TEXAS IN CLOSE DUAL
California built an early lead against Texas, but
the Longhorns came through with a strong finish,
winning five of the final six events, to edge the
Golden Bears, 161-139, on Oct. 31 at home.
The meet came down to the final event, with Cal
needing to take the first two spots in the 200-yard
freestyle relay to clinch a tie. But Texas claimed first
and third place in the race to hold off the Bears.
Junior Elizabeth Pelton captured the 100 (53.79)
and 200 (1:54.33) backstroke, the 200 individual
medley (1:58.69) and anchored the victorious
400 medley relay. Sophomore Missy Franklin also
prevailed in the 100 (50.13) and 200 (1:47.37) free.
• CAL SPREADS THE WEALTH IN OSU WIN
Ten different Golden Bears picked up individual
event victories, resulting in a 156-97 victory over
Oregon State, in Cal’s home opener Oct. 23. Among
the winners were three freshmen, who were making
their Spieker Aquatics Complex debuts - Jasmine
Mau claimed the 100 back (55.67), Noemie
Thomas prevailed in the 100 fly (54.09) and Maija
Roses took the 200 breast (2:20.39). Swimming
in the 100 breast, sophomore Marina Garcia set a
team season best with a time of 1:03.05.
• BEARS CHALLENGED AT ALL FLORIDA MEET
Cal last got in the water for a meet Oct. 3-5 when
the Bears traveled to Gainesville for the All Florida
Invitational. The prelims-finals format presented Cal
with three days of tough racing, giving head coach
Teri McKeever deeper insight into the possibilities
for her 2014-15 squad.
Overall, five individuals claimed seven races with
NCAA B standard times, including double-winners
Celina Li (200 IM, 1:58.81; 200 fly, 1:58.38) and
Missy Franklin (200 free, 1:46.37; 100 back,
54.05). Others to come out on top were Kelly Naze
(400 IM, 4:17.80), Elizabeth Pelton (200 back,
1:54.23) and Marina Garcia (200 breast, 2:15.88).
In addition, the 800 free relay of Caroline Piehl,
Catherine Breed, Cierra Runge and Camille Cheng
took first in 7:20.65.
• CELINA LI KEEPS HER CROWN
Retaining the crown she won last September,
sophomore Celina Li again captured the Queen of
the Pool title at Cal’s season-opening meet held at
Cal Poly Sept. 19. The unique competition, featuring
swimmers from Cal and Cal Poly, combines 100yard times from five races – 100-yard free, 100-yard
back, 100-yard fly, 100-yard breast and 100-yard
individual medley – to determine an overall winner.
Despite not claiming an individual event, Li
finished first in 4:42.90, improving on her mark
of 4:43.10 from last year. Junior Elizabeth Pelton
was second in 4:45.34, followed by junior Rachel
Bootsma (4:47.02), junior Kelly Naze (4:50.20) and
freshman Jasmine Mau (4:51.59).
• KASTLER, SMART LEAD DIVERS AT UCLA
Anne Kastler led Cal on both the 1-meter and
3-meter boards and Eleanor Smart paced the Bears
on platform at the Bruin Invitational Jan. 17-19.
Kastler took sixth on 1-meter (535.30) and ninth
on 3-meter (536.30), while Smart had the team’s
best finish of the weekend when she finished third
on platform with a score of 496.00.
