“Saint Ignatius is a second home to me! I enjoy the
various activities that we do in both the classroom, with
clubs and sports. I like that our teachers are very caring and
understanding of all our students. The school has given me
knowledge and leadership skills that I will take with me into
8th grade and high school. It provides a great education and
unforgettable experiences.”

˜ŠŒ¤“š‘¤’Ž¦¤§¡Ž
Dear Friends,
Our theme this year invites reecƟon. But in our fast-paced world, we all
have less Ɵme for introspecƟon. Yet truth, or ““Veritas”” as the Dominicans live it,
requires that we court her with our whole being so that we may honor the good
news of the Gospel. Each of us is a child of God, loved from all eternity, created
for eternity, redeemed with love and hope. For those children served by sŝƐŝŽŶŽĨ
,ŽƉĞ and its family of schools, the realizaƟon of that potenƟal depends on loving
parents, caring teachers and generous supporters. Over the last 19 years, sŝƐŝŽŶ
ŽĨ,ŽƉĞ schools have instructed, nurtured and shaped the lives of thousands of
children, our Dominican children.
So how do we dene success? Is it simply the accomplishment of one’’s goals?
If we believe that life is a journey without end, then success becomes an ongoing
process with mulƟple deniƟons. Because of you, we can say that sŝƐŝŽŶŽĨ,ŽƉĞ is
a success. It conƟnues on its mission to ensure a quality educaƟon for its inner city
schools, its children, and their families.
Many of you were educated by the Dominicans or other religious
congregaƟons whose sacrices made Catholic educaƟon aīordable to almost
every family. Today, our lay teachers require a living wage to raise their own
families. If you believe that your educaƟon and the values it nurtured in you played
a signicant role in your life - in making you the person you are today –– please
help make this opportunity available to someone else whose life could also be
transformed. Let Vision of Hope be your way of ““paying it forward.””
Our faculƟes and staīs conƟnue to study innovaƟve ways to educate our
students to the fullest. You will hear about Blended Learning –– an emerging
method that integrates classroom-based learning with technology-based learning
tailored to the individual needs of students, so that they become lifelong learners.
We are exploring partnerships with Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara UniversiƟes
to implement Blended Learning into our curricula. ExciƟng things are happening!
We invite you to enjoy our ŶŶƵĂůZĞƉŽƌƚ and to consider your impact on
sŝƐŝŽŶŽĨ,ŽƉĞ’’s mission and families. Thank you for all you do. May God conƟnue
to bless the Veritas in you and your families.
Your very grateful,

Next year will celebrate 125 years that Sacred Heart
Elementary has served generaƟons of immigrants from
Europe and now LaƟn America. Lincoln Heights has
experienced many transiƟons over its 124 years. Can you
hear the conuence of languages driŌing through the
decades? The school and parish conƟnue to be centers for
the faith development and educaƟon of their families.
It was a great party! In October a special liturgy, a
dinner dance, and an aŌernoon of family fun celebrated
an anniversary: One hundred twenty years as a very acƟve
Dominican/Franciscan presence in the Fruitvale District of
Oakland. While the area has changed dramaƟcally over the
years, the quality of educaƟon at Saint Elizabeth thrives.
Among this year’’s accomplishments are the following:
••
Thirty-one students graduated. Twenty-seven will
aƩend one of 12 Catholic high schools.
••
Of the 44 graduates, 36 will aƩend Catholic high
schools this fall.
••
Sacred Heart launched two new music programs
this year in conjuncƟon with Neighborhood Music
School and the Young Musicians FoundaƟon.
••
••
The school partnered with Wells Fargo Bank’’s
““Hands On Banking”” Program with local managers
teaching 4th to 8th graders about personal
nances and budgets.
Eight graduates received full scolarships at
Catholic high schools from the Achieve Program.
Founded in 1997 by Barbara Bass Bakar, the
program provides access to quality educaƟon for
low-income students and honors 20 students in
the Bay Area with Saint Elizabeth garnering 40% of
these.
••
Entered the 25th Annual Junior High Academic
Decathlon with 99 other schools, Samantha
MarƟnez placed rst in literature!
••
••
Visit the school website for more news and
events: www.sacredheartla.org.
The 21st Century Learning Center, Special Needs
Center, and marching band with its annual peace
march through the neighborhood conƟnue to
thrive.
••
This summer 100 students enjoyed a creaƟve,
privately funded program using math and
language skills to explore theme parks, art,
cooking, and learning. One group parƟcipated in
the Khan Academy Point Challenge, a program of
the online free educaƟon site Khan Academy.

In April 2014, Saint Anthony of Padua Parish
celebrated the 120th anniversary of the Franciscans’’
invitaƟon to the Dominicans to found a school in their
parish. Tours given by the students following the liturgy
and luncheon featured many memories, especially the
First Communion and class photos. The school that exists
today is a merger of that amazing heritage and another
newer (1957) Dominican school, Immaculate ConcepƟon
Elementary, just blocks away. That marriage took place
in 1998 at the mandate of Archbishop John Quinn. His
vision: an enƟty born of these two schools would be a
giŌ to the Mission District. This year’’s accomplishments
follow:
••
Nineteen students graduated this year. Thirteen of
them will aƩend Catholic high schools next
year, each at their rst-choice school.
••
The school purchased 20 new Apple iPads with
grants from the Dominican Sisters of MSJ and the
Joseph and Mercedes McMicking FoundaƟon. The
enƟre school used these tools to learn the science
of coding. They parƟcipated in The Hour of
Code, an introductory computer science course.
AddiƟonal coding tutorials provided ongoing
educaƟon throughout the year.
••
The Drumline conƟnued to perform, marching
in the San Francisco St. Patrick’’s Day parade and
also during halŌime at Archbishop Riordan High
School.
••
All students have parƟcipated in internet
technologies, making videos, blogging,
communicaƟng and sharing with other students
around the world.
••
Check out their websites at www.saicsf.org and
www.saictechtcr.net.
What a year of wonder for Saint Michael’’s! While
the school is over 110 years old, its many physical
improvements over the years (thanks in large measure
to the benecence of John and Dorothy Shea) and
the vigorous curriculum and extra-curricular oīerings,
conƟnue to make Saint Michael’’s a centerpiece for South
Los Angeles. Under the leadership and guidance of its new
principal Mrs. Rodriquez, the school can list numerous
accomplishments:
••
The school graduated 26 students; 16 of whom
will be aƩending Catholic high schools.
••
School enrollment increased from 296 to 310. And
ITBS benchmarks improved in mathemaƟcs by
14% while ELA/Reading benchmarks improved by
5%.
••
The school entered the Deanery’’s Academic
Decathlon sending 10 middle school students.
They came home with three awards: a second
place in literature, a rst place in both social
studies and mathemaƟcs.
••
Thanks to Saint Michael’’s many friends, the school
has a new playground structure, a 12-person van,
a renovated computer lab for 2014-2015 plus
$70,000 from the ““Unfriendly Sons of St. Patrick.””

““I am so thankful to the Saint IgnaƟus family……for
providing me a strong foundaƟon built on trust, respect,
and life-long friendships.”” These are the words of 1978
grad Lisa Rosales, the rst woman, LaƟna police chief of
San Pablo, California, and featured in dŚĞ/ŐŶĂƟĂŶ. Over
the years, its students have conƟnued to thrive. In a recent
survey, the school conrmed that from the Class of 2010,
21 of its graduates are going onto college, a conrmaƟon
of their strong foundaƟon.
Is Saint James one of Father Serra’’s famous California
missions? No, it is a Dominican school in the Mission
District of San Francisco that conƟnues to be faithful
to its mission to address the needs of an ever changing
immigrant populaƟon with the best quality educaƟon,
care, and enthusiasm. The school works to meet evolving
needs. The school also emphasizes strong environmental
programs with a majority of their longer eld trips focusing
on studying and caring for our environment. They had
addiƟonal accomplishments in this last year especially in
their tech equipment:
••
••
••
••
••
Twenty-four students graduated in June. Eighteen
will be aƩending Catholic high schools. Four
students achieved honors at entrance.
••
In partnership with Loyola Marymount University
and the Baxter FoundaƟon, the school will begin
Blended Learning in the fourth grade in the fall.
Nineteen students graduated from Saint James
with 13 aƩending Catholic schools in the fall.
••
The ““Pup’’s Quest Reading Program”” in
Kindergarten and classical music through the Saint
Cecilia Orchestra were added to the curriculum.
The school earned a six-year accreditaƟon, the
maximum that WASC (Western AssociaƟon of
Schools and Colleges) awards.
••
The MulƟ-Level Literacy Program allows
students to advance at their own pace in three
areas: English language development, reading
comprehension skills, and small reading groups.
iPads, Chromebooks, an Epson Brightlink 455WI
projector, and an ELMO document reader further
enhance individualized learning.
••
This year, the curriculum included an expanded
Spanish program to include grades 4 –– 8 and a
new Art program for grades K –– 3.
••

Santa Teresita has a very strong development
board founded by loyal alumni Yvonne and Sam Navarro.
They have brought funds and friends to the school. Their
support and sŝƐŝŽŶŽĨ,ŽƉĞ enable Sister Mary Catherine
to leverage partnerships that enhance the curriculum.
Faculty is also responsible for enriching the oīerings to
their students. Look at the accomplishments of the past
year to see some of those oīerings. Music programs
are strengthened by partnerships with Los Angeles
Philharmonic Symphonies and the USC Thornton School
of Music Outreach. Art Trek, Inc. is the school’’s partner
in presenƟng a basic working knowledge of art in all its
aspects.
Saint Frances Cabrini was incredibly blessed in the last
year with a new soccer eld, the rst and only such eld
for elementary students in South Los Angeles, a giŌ of
John and Dorothy Shea. The ““Sister Johnnie’’s Field-sŝƐŝŽŶ

all the Deanery 16 schools. They have already hosted their
rst soccer Tournament and plan to make it an annual
event. The children had a new appreciaƟon for this year’’s
World Cup in Brazil. The school’’s enrollment conƟnues
to climb with 15 new students this last year. To quote a
’’97 graduate Rose Smith: ““Bigger, brighter and beƩer!
The future is ours! Go Cabrini!”” Read on for addiƟonal
accomplishments:
••
The school graduated 21 students. Nine will aƩend
Catholic high schools.
••
The school graduated 17 students with 12 going
on to Catholic high schools.
••
Enrollment increased by 11%, the highest in 10
years.
••
••
The school partnered with the Society of American
Military Engineers for its MathleƟcs program
which advances the sciences in line with STEM
goals (science, technology, engineering and math).
Math scores accelerated from the 73rd percenƟle
to the 94th percenƟle with the introducƟon of

Last year’’s ŶŶƵĂůZĞƉŽƌƚrecapped a history of each of our eight schools and of sŝƐŝŽŶŽĨ,ŽƉĞ. It highlighted the
eīorts of the friends of sŝƐŝŽŶŽĨ,ŽƉĞ to revitalize the eight aging schools and to improve the resources for each of the
schools and their students. More than $10 million was invested over the years on deferred maintenance alone. Time,
weather, use, earthquakes, etc. had wreaked havoc on most of the schools. Now they funcƟon with improved buildings
and new technology. They are more than able to compete with other publicly funded schools. What makes them
diīerent? Their goals are magnied to include the development of the whole child and subsequently the family and the
communiƟes they serve.
This year our more compact ŶŶƵĂůZĞƉŽƌƚ iterates signicant accomplishments of the past year. Our ““by the

Revenue and Support
The net assets, $600,197, were reinvested in the tuiƟon assistance and endowment funds. In the scal year ending
July 31, 2014, sŝƐŝŽŶŽĨ,ŽƉĞ distributed $730,922 in support of our schools as above. ““Book of Dreams”” will be published
again this coming year.
AŌer the distribuƟon of grants, the value of sŝƐŝŽŶŽĨ,ŽƉĞ’’s endowment stood at $8,865,788. sŝƐŝŽŶŽĨ,ŽƉĞ
awarded grants to our schools who, in turn, gave tuiƟon assistance this past year in grants ranging in size from $200 to
$6,767 to 601 students. In the upcoming year, we are hoping to signicantly increase this amount due to the serious
nancial challenges facing our families.
For informaƟon about donaƟng securiƟes to the ŽŵŝŶŝĐĂŶ^ŝƐƚĞƌƐsŝƐŝŽŶŽĨ,ŽƉĞ, please contact Sister Karen
Elizabeth Zavitz at 510-534-9636 for wiring instrucƟons. Audited nancial statements for the scal year ending July 31,
2014 will be available in November.

“As one of my daughters prepares to graduate from
Saint James - she leaves academically strong which is critical
in order for her to thrive in high school. Although she has a
learning difference, she is confident due to the support of the
staff and encouragement for her to take risks.”
