FVRD and UFV to partner in environment, community planning
Chilliwack, BC – The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) and the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV)
have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to further develop opportunities for students to work on
environmental and community planning projects in the region.
Since 2013, the FVRD has supported UFV in a number of student led projects in spatial planning and
environmental research. Sharon Gaetz, Chair of the FVRD says, “We are very fortunate to have a leading
edge educational facility like UFV in our community. Formalizing this partnership gives students real-life
exposure to current local government planning issues and provides our staff with fresh, innovative ideas
to explore in regional development.”
The students are based in UFV’s Geography and Environment program, which has a strong focus on
experiential and field-based learning. The FVRD provides over 100 local, regional and subregional
services to over 280,000 residents in six member municipalities and eight electoral areas. Governed by a
23 member board of directors, the FVRD serves the public to build prosperous, sustainable communities
throughout the Fraser Valley.
