2nd grade parents: You are invited to the 2nd Grade Native American Celebration Friday, November 21, 2014 10:00-10:45am CBPS Gym. The 2nd grade students have been learning many Native American songs, dances and stories. Each class has learned a separate Native American activity to be performed at our Native American Celebration. Words to the songs can be found on the back of this page and also on the music website, www.cantonsmusic.org, so your student can practice them at home with the whole family. Many of the songs use sounds called “vocables”. Vocables can be remnants or fragments of an old tribal language or may be an effort to imitate a language from another tribe. I have also included some suggestions on how to make “Dancing Cuffs” that you can make at home and that can be worn for our Native American Celebration. “Dancing Cuffs” Get some bells from a pet or toy store. Attach them to a ribbon or elastic tape large enough to tie around your ankles and/or wrists. Then, as you dance and move your arms, the bells will move in rhythm. You can also make the cuffs by using old, worn-out socks. Cut the cuffs from four of these socks and attach the bells around each of them. Then slip the cuffs over your wrists and ankles. They will stay comfortably in place throughout the dance. You can also use a scrunchy and add some bells to it. Thank you very much and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!! SONG OF THE WORLD – Pima Out of darkness, came a creator. He rolled up a ball and this became the earth. From pieces of a rock, he made the stars to light the sky. But they did not light up the darkness. So he made the Milky Way. But still it was not light enough. He took two large bowls, filled one with water, and covered it with the other. The water bowl turned into the sun, shining out in rays through the cracks where the bowls touched. He threw the sun into the air. First he threw it to the north, then the west, and then the south. But it would not stay in place. Finally, he threw it to the east where it bounced up into the sky and stayed. Each morning it bounces up again. NAVAHO HAPPY SONG (exit song) Hi yo hi yo ip si na ya, Hi yo hi yo ip si na ya. Hi yo hi yo ip si na ya, Hi yo hi yo ip si na ya. Ip si na ya!
