WINNIPEG FOLK FESTIVAL
2013 -14 ANNUAL REPORT

ABOUT US
The inaugural Winnipeg Folk Festival was held in 1974 as a one-time celebration
to mark Winnipeg’s centennial. The festival was free and attracted an estimated
audience of 22,000 over the three-day weekend. While the festival has grown
considerably since then, 1974 established important roots with the community
that remain strong today.
The festival’s cumulative attendance now exceeds 80,000 and includes thousands
of visitors from outside of Manitoba and performers from across North America
and the world. The organization has nearly 3000 dedicated volunteers who
contribute over 60,000 hours of labour each year to create the magic that is the
Winnipeg Folk Festival.
The Winnipeg Folk Festival generates $29.4 million in economic activity and
creates 281 jobs for the province of Manitoba. The impact on Gross Domestic
Product (GDP) in Manitoba is estimated at $14.7 million. The GDP represents the
estimated net economic activity generated from this signature Manitoba event.*
Over the years, the Winnipeg Folk Festival has evolved from a one-weekend
event to a year round arts organization and community asset with folk music at
its heart. Today, the festival presents concerts and events throughout the year,
supports the community with education and outreach programs and operates a
folk music store and performance space in Winnipeg’s historic Exchange District.
The Winnipeg Folk Festival is a not-for-profit charitable organization.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I’m
proud to introduce our 2013-14 Annual
Report.
The report provides a summary of a very
momentous year. We celebrated our 40th
Winnipeg Folk Festival in grand style. Artists
from every decade of the festival’s history
performed, including several who graced
the stage of the first event in 1974. We
also unveiled the second phase of our site
redevelopment, which featured changes
aimed at improving the experience of our
growing audience.
In addition to this, the organization worked
all year to create experiences of discovery
and learning through the celebration of
people and music – which just so happens
to be the Winnipeg Folk Festival’s mission.
We do this through presenting concerts,
music education and mentorship programs,
community outreach, exhibitions and family
programming all throughout the year.
And all of this is governed by our core
values that include: building community;
promoting artistic excellence; collaboration;
inclusiveness; creative expression;
fostering environmental sustainability,
entrepreneurship; and excellence in
governance and management.
As a board, we have the great privilege to
support the work of the people who make
this happen – the Winnipeg Folk Festival
staff. It is their passion, and the passion
of those who came before them, that has
made the Winnipeg Folk Festival the great
organization that it is. Thanks to them, our
patrons, funders, sponsors and volunteers,
we can look back on an incredible 40 years
and forward to the future.
Mike Baudic | Chair
MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
This past year was one of the most
important in the history of the
Winnipeg Folk Festival. Between our site
redevelopment and the celebration of our
40th festival, there was much to be excited
about in 2013.
We hoped that all the new changes to the
site would be well received and I’m happy to
report that the feedback from our audience
was overwhelmingly positive. However, it
was with an amazingly supportive team
including our board, staff (and contractors),
volunteers and funders, that we were able
to present a successful site redevelopment
and great year of celebration.
We have also been working on expanding
our programming around the rest of the
year. We’ve done more concerts, workshops
and special performances than ever
before – and connected even more with
our folk community year-round. From our
WINNIPEG FOLK FESTIVAL 2013 - 2014 ANNUAL REPORT
Young Performers Program at the festival
to presenting the most established artists
in our concert series, we continue to share
more music – and ways to experience it –
around the year. We are looking forward to
building even more as we work to realize
the vision of making Winnipeg the folk
music capital of North America.
As we enter our 41st year, we have much to
celebrate – financial stability, a strong and
committed volunteer base, staff and board,
and the passion to build our presence and
our folk community. We are happy to have
so many wonderful people take part in this
with us.
Lynne Skromeda | Executive Director

2013 - 14 AT A GLANCE
HIGHLIGHTS
40TH FESTIVAL CELEBRATIONS
A 2013-2017 STRATEGIC PLAN
To celebrate our 40th year, we had some special programming both
at the festival and in advance. We held an art exhibition in February
in partnership with Gurevich Fine Art entitled “People and Music” with
portraits of artists and patrons from the festival. We also had our Festival
Memory Project blog running throughout the year where people shared
their favourite festival stories and photos online. We held two special
workshops at the festival: the “40 Years of People” storytelling workshop
with Winnipeg Folk Festival founders and the “1974” workshop featuring
artists who played the first festival. In addition we had a dedicated tent
on site with our “Connecting Generations” exhibit featuring photos
throughout our history as well as a short video featuring people and
music from our first few years.
In 2013, our staff and board worked diligently to put in place a new
strategic plan to carry us through the next five years. With four new strategic
objectives, we have an energetic plan to get us closer to our vision.
• To grow the organization’s excellence and international reputation.
• To bring folk music into people’s lives throughout the year.
• To enhance the ability of folk musicians to live and work in our
community. • To establish the key partnerships and strategic alliances required to
advance our vision and contribute to a stronger arts community. FOLK FESTIVAL IN THE CITY
This was our second year under the new theme that brings the feel
of Birds Hill Park to the city. Our festival-themed fundraising gala in
November featured tall grass centrepieces and our popular silent auction
and was once again a sellout, rasising over $52,000 for our Outreach &
Education programs.
CELEBRATIONS
A GREENER FESTIVAL AWARD
Ani DiFranco, 2013 Artistic Achievement Award recipient,
performs at Folk Festival in the City.
For the first time, we received international
recognition for our sustainability initiatives.
Receiving the Commended Award for being a well
managed, environmentally aware festival is a proud
moment for all the effort and dedication our staff
and volunteers have put into making our festival
and festival site sustainable.
ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
VOLUNTEER MANITOBA AWARDS
GALAXIE RISING STAR AWARD
Two very committed volunteers received awards from Volunteer
Manitoba this year. Harry Paine received the Lieutenant Governor’s Make
a Difference Community Award and Karen Dana received the William
Norrie Award for Outstanding Community Leadership (Urban). We are so
proud of them for this recognition and appreciative of what they have
done for the festival.

At Folk Festival in the City in November, we were pleased to honour Ani
DiFranco with this award. Ani has had more than 20 years of history and
connection with the festival. Her passion for social and environmental
issues and her entrepreneurial spirit align closely with festival values,
and make her a perfect recipient. This year we also commissioned a new
award by blacksmith, Matt Jenkins of Cloverdale Forge.
A part of our Galaxie Young Performers Program, this year’s Rising Star,
given to a promising new artist, went to Winnipeg singer-songwriter,
Haley Carr. She also performed at Folk Festival in the City in the opening
slot for Ani DiFranco.
Each year, the festival honours one
individual and one organization
for significant contribution to the
festival with this special award. This
year’s Glass Banjos were awarded to
longtime festival partner Fairmont
Winnipeg and the Singleton/Hiebert/
Sults/Helene family, many of whom
were part of the festival from its
beginning and/or who grew up with
the festival.

SITE REDEVELOPMENT
IMPROVING OUR FESTIVAL HOME
2013/14 was a milestone year in the implementation of the second
phase of the Site Redevelopment Project. Through careful planning and
consultation with a variety of stakeholders, including Birds Hill Provincial
Park, the front-of-house areas of the festival saw a $1.6-million overhaul in
time to celebrate our 40th Winnipeg Folk Festival. This included:
• A central Festival Village that serves as a gathering place and hub for
key services
• A reorganization of key services such as audience services, food
vendors, Hand-Made Village and music store centered around the new
Festival Village
• Permanent food kiosks for 18 vendors
• A visually striking and defining Village Tower that soars high in the air
and acts as a meeting point
• Two new forest stages providing additional opportunities for
programming and a shady viewing experience for the audience
• Additional pathways that link the Main Gate, Festival Village and the new
forest stages to enhance accessibility
• Trees planted for shade throughout the grounds and the introduction of
a shaded eating area near the food vendors
• A series of wayfinders to assist the audience to find their way through
the site
• Upgrades to the drainage infrastructure to allow the festival to operate
under all weather conditions
• Upgrades to the electrical infrastructure to service the new stages and
relocated operations
• A donor forest recognizing the generous support from the community
that made this project possible

STAGING THE FUTURE
We would like to thank all the donors who have made a gift in support of
the Staging the Future Capital Campaign. In the past year, we have made
significant progress in both the public and private campaigns. Of our
$6-million goal, we have just under $25,000 left to raise to complete our
site redevelopment plans!
Generous support for the campaign has come from so many sources –
including foundations, government funders, corporations, festival fans
and musicians.
During the 2013 Folk Fest, attendees once again participated in the
campaign by making their own gifts at our Staging the Future tent and
WINNIPEG FOLK FESTIVAL 2013 - 2014 ANNUAL REPORT
we continued to use this opportunity to share information and discuss
the new developments to the festival site at Birds Hill Provincial Park.
We were very excited to present our donor forest to patrons, donors and
volunteers during the festival. Our donor forest is uniquely designed for
donor recognition (and shade).
Thank you to our campaign team and the board of the festival for their
commitment to reaching our fundraising goal – we are looking forward
to celebrating the success of the campaign and seeing the benefits that
this project will bring to our community.

2013 WINNIPEG
FOLK FESTIVAL
ARTISTS
FESTIVAL
The 40th anniversary was a memorable year for programming at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. With 56,811
paid attendees and a cumulative total attendance of 82,953, the anniversary year marked one of the largest
audiences of the past decade. Our audience enjoyed 86 diverse musical acts on 10 daytime stages and two
evenings stages in 41 workshops and 93 concerts. Bringing together our signature collection of exceptional
artists from all over the world, the 40th anniversary lineup also included performers from the very first festival
in 1974, past festival favourites and of course, an excellent group of local Manitoba acts. Musical highlights
included Saturday night headliner Galactic performing ‘I Am the Walrus’ to an ecstatic crowd, Nathan Rogers
honouring his father in his ‘Nathan Sings Stan’ tribute, and award-winning acts The Avett Brothers and Serena
Ryder kicking off the festival with sizzling sets on Wednesday and Thursday nights. In memory of Stompin’
Tom Connors, a group of artists performed their favourite Stompin’ Tom tunes in an afternoon workshop
called ‘The Best Song You Can Name’.

HAND-MADE VILLAGE
The Hand-Made Village has been an integral part of the festival since 1974. We selected 52 artisans from
across Canada to sell their wares at the 2013 festival. Artisans had a prominent location in the new Festival
Village, and for the first time ever were open on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
PRAIRIE OUTDOOR EXHIBITION
The festival site comes alive each year with a unique outdoor gallery featuring the art of our Prairie Outdoor
Exhibition. The theme of the exhibition in 2013 was the celebration of our 40th anniversary. We also
commissioned two new stage backdrops for the forest stages. Thanks to all of the artists who brought their
talents to this year’s festival.

CAMPGROUND ANIMATION
The Festival Campground is all about creative expression and encouraging a magical community experience
for all. In 2013, 20 unique animation projects brought everything from Big Games’ giant Jenga and
Battleship, to the serendipitous Mushroom Hunt, to our own temporary tattoo parlour, Vintage Flash. Thanks
to everyone for their energy and ingenuity.

YEAR-ROUND
CONCERT SERIES
Each year the Winnipeg Folk Festival produces
a very successful year-round concert series
that brings back festival alumni and new local,
national and international artists to multiple
venues around Winnipeg. This year we presented 29 concerts
with a combined audience of over 13,000. Our Concert Series
keeps us in touch and engaged with our festival patrons,
volunteers and music lovers all year long. Through our concerts
we support many music venues in the city and contribute to
the diversity and financial sustainability of Winnipeg’s music
community.

FOLK EXCHANGE
CONCERTS IN THE EXCHANGE
The Folk Exchange is the Winnipeg Folk Festival’s intimate, gallery-style venue,
located in the heart of the Exchange District. The Live @ The Folk Exchange
series highlights emerging and established performers in an intimate acoustic
setting. In 2013, we aimed to increase the programming in the venue,
resulting in over double the amount of concerts as the previous year. Through
35 concerts, another season of successful Open Mic nights co-presented with
Manitoba Music, and our Ron Oswald Young Performers showcases, over
1,500 people attended our Folk Exchange programming this year.
In partnership with the Exchange District Biz, the festival once
again presented lunch hour concerts in Old Market Square. This
year they were billed as ‘Winnipeg Folk Festival Wednesdays’. The
outdoor concerts showcased some of the finest up and coming
performers from across Canada. Featuring a different band each
week, these free concerts are one of the great ways we reach out
to new audiences and give back to our community.

WINNIPEG FOLK FESTIVAL MUSIC
STORE
The Winnipeg Folk Festival Music Store continues to be a
destination for independent and hard to find music of all kinds.
Although the store bucks the trend in the industry for CD sales
at the summer event, year-round sales have been on the decline
and we are looking at some innovative ways to bring new
customers into the store. This was the first year we began to sell
some used inventory, a trend we would like to continue in the
future. The festival autograph area and music store performance
stage have also become really popular extensions of the
Winnipeg Folk Festival Music Store presence on site.

EDUCATION & OUTREACH
GALAXIE YOUNG PERFORMERS PROGRAM
The Young Performers Program gives young musicians ages 14 to 24
the opportunity to work on their craft with renowned festival artists
and perform on stage at the festival. Now in its 14th year, the Young
Performers Program continues to be a popular program, with applications
greatly exceeding the amount of musicians that the program can
accommodate. In 2013, 41 participants had the opportunity to work with
mentors Whitehorse (Luke Doucet & Melissa McLelland), Jason Collett
and local favourites Oh My Darling. The musicians also participated in
an industry session presented by Manitoba Music and Manitoba Film
and Music. Thanks to a partnership with Galaxie, all program costs for
Canadian participants are covered by bursary support. In the spring, many
past Young Performers Program participants performed as part of a twonight showcase held in The Folk Exchange, supported by the Ron Oswald
Fund for Young Performers.

FOLK MUSIC CAMP
For four days leading up to our festival in July, musicians of all skill
levels from the community and beyond have the opportunity to
work with festival performers to hone their musical skills. In 2013,
the Folk Music Camp invited Dan Bern, Tony Furtado, and Sara and
Sean Watkins to share their time and talents. Over the four days
participants dove into classes and workshops in songwriting, banjo,
slide neck guitar, fiddle and more.
GUEST FOR A DAY

Now in its 6th year, the Guest for a Day program invites not-for-profit
community groups to share in the festival experience. The program
offers selected groups the opportunity to enjoy a guided day at the
festival free of charge that includes meals and transportation. Over
700 community members participated in the program in 2013.
NEWCOMER CREW

Jeremy Hamm and Chris Saywell (not pictured: Greg MacPherson). Photo by Keri Lesnick
Now in its 4th year, the Newcomer Volunteer Program provided
training and support to 45 new adult and youth volunteers, and
saw 13 graduating participants continue with us on regular crews.
Participants on this crew are either new Canadians or are from
the inner city, and receive extra orientation about the festival and
volunteerism in general. Thanks to Red River College, NEEDS, and
Broadway Neighbourhood Centre for partnering with us on this
venture.
FREE CONCERTS AT THE MILLENNIUM
LIBRARY
Over 1,500 people attended our In The City, Folk For Families and
Travelin’ concert series this year! In collaboration with the Winnipeg
Public Library we presented 14 family concerts and workshops just
like you would see at the festival. Our themed workshops hosted
a line-up of great local artists sharing songs and stories. Folk For
Families and Travelin’ series presented concerts for the little ones with
local acts who have performed under our Chickadee Big Top.

ACCESSIBILITY
In 2013, we continued to build on all of our accessibility services and
continued the implementation of American Sign Language interpretation
for all Family Area performances. We hope to expand this service in the
coming years.
MUSICAL MENTORS
Now in its 4th year, the Musical Mentors Program brings together local
musicians with Winnipeg youth that otherwise have little to no exposure
to music education. By pairing students with mentors, the program helps
youth explore the craft of songwriting and music making. Aaron Burnett,
Keri Latimer, Leonard Sumner, Lindsey White, Rusty Matyas, Sheena
Grobb, Scott Nolan and Jason Burnstick worked with groups to develop
and write their own songs, work towards live performance opportunities
and record a song in a professional studio.

FOLK SCHOOL
Folk School in the Folk Exchange hosted over 10 classes and workshops
in 2013 with over 100 registrants enrolled. The always popular ukulele
classes for all skill levels, bluegrass banjo, blues harmonica and beginner
workshops in penny whistle, and bodhran kept folk music alive in our
community throughout the year.

SUSTAINABILITY
THE WINNIPEG FOLK FESTIVAL CONTINUES TO EMBRACE SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS
PRACTICES. EACH YEAR, WE SEARCH FOR NEW WAYS TO MINIMIZE THE ENVIRONMENTAL
IMPACT OF THE FESTIVAL AND OUR YEAR-ROUND ACTIVITIES.

RECYCLING
CYCLING
We introduced additional recycling bins on the festival site and the
campgrounds. The weight of materials composted this year was down
slightly due to not allowing glass in the campgrounds.
Our Bike Ride to Site program continues to be popular, and was filled to
capacity with 300 riders. This program provides a fun and safe alternative
to driving a car out to the festival site. To support the avid cyclists in our
audience, we added more bike racks at the Main Gate and in the Festival
Campground in 2013, and added bicycle repair services to the Festival
Campground to complement the services already offered at the main
festival grounds.
COMPOSTING
Our composting program has grown significantly in the past few years.
Food vendors are required to use all compostable products for any
disposable items such as cutlery, napkins and cups. Beer and wine
cups used in the Taverns are also compostable. In 2013, the amount of
material composted increased by 5% from the previous year to 13,395
kgs. This is equivalent to the weight of eight full size hippopotamuses.
Greenhouse gas emissions avoided due to composting were .89
tonnes of Methane and 18.69 tonnes of CO2. We also introduced a pilot
composting project in the Quiet Campground and have increased
awareness in the Festival Campground.
FESTIVAL EXPRESS, CAMPGROUND SHUTTLE
AND HOTEL SHUTTLE
The Festival Express is the extremely popular transit service that
the festival offers free of charge between Winnipeg and the festival.
Ridership levels were maintained at 5,034 riders. We estimate that we
saved 37,652 KG of CO2 emissions in 2013. This is equivalent to 4,221
gallons of gasoline consumed.
SOLAR POWER
We continued to power the music store stage and cell phone charging
station by solar energy.
LOCAL, ORGANIC AND FAIR TRADE
We continue to source as many local, organic and fair trade products as
possible for the backstage catering at the festival that serves up to 5,000
volunteers, performers and guests at each meal. Festival food vendors
are encouraged to offer local, organic and Fair Trade options to our
audience. We also incorporate this philosophy into our office and at yearround events. Fair Trade Manitoba certified the Winnipeg Folk Festival as
a Fair Trade Event.
The internal campground shuttle helps reduce traffic within the park by
providing service to 4,544 people between the park’s three campgrounds
and the festival site. This is an increase in ridership from 3,812 in 2012.
Our shuttle from the Fairmont Hotel that services volunteers and
performers continues to grow in popularity, further reducing vehicle
traffic between Winnipeg and Birds Hill Park.

VOLUNTEERS
We often say that the Winnipeg Folk Festival could not happen without
our volunteers and it’s absolutely true, this year perhaps more than
ever. Our volunteers have been instrumental in creating this special
place we return to every year, where we connect with people who share
our common values of community, inclusiveness and collaboration. They
are the ambassadors of the festival and go to great lengths to create a
wonderful experience for us all.
With nearly 3,000 enthusiastic and dedicated people on our team, it’s
easy to feel that we can do just about anything. The 2013 Winnipeg
Folk Festival presented new challenges with substantial site changes
and a major milestone celebration. Through all of this, we relied heavily
on the support, expertise and commitment of our volunteers to guide
us through this journey, and we are so pleased to report that the
40th Winnipeg Folk Festival was a success. Our volunteers welcomed
thousands of visitors and made them feel like they were “home” – there is
no better test or benchmark by which to judge our success.
We continue to make volunteering at the Winnipeg Folk Festival
accessible to all through a variety of programs – our Newcomer crew, our
Apprentice crew, and by supporting our volunteers with disabilities with
an accessibility pass that gives them an opportunity to have someone
support them with their work. A new milestone was added to our
recognition program and for the first time the organization recognized
20-year volunteers, as well as our 30-year volunteers and even a 40-year
volunteer. We are proud to consider these volunteers the champions of
our organization.

DEVELOPMENT
The Winnipeg Folk Festival is a not-for-profit organization driven by its
mission to create experiences of discovery and learning through the
celebration of people and music. Our supporters are key to the delivery
of our mission through the summer festival and our year-round
programming.
INDIVIDUAL ANNUAL GIVING
In another year with a strong focus on the Capital Campaign we saw
general donations to the annual campaign decline slightly; however,
are very pleased that our annual donors continued to respond well to
our growing education and outreach programming.
Donations support creative expression in our little folk.
ENDOWMENT
Our endowment fund held at the Winnipeg Foundation saw positive
growth as the Foundation’s holdings showed a strong return in the
2013 season. The Winnipeg Folk Festival’s Endowment Fund is currently
$983,541.
GRANTS
Stable operating support from each level of government remained
unchanged in 2013. Thanks to Canadian Heritage for their support
through the Canadian Arts Presentation Canada Fund, the Province of
Manitoba through the Department of Tourism, Culture, Heritage, Sport
and Consumer Protection, the Manitoba Arts Council and the Winnipeg
Arts Council.

SPONSORSHIPS
Our corporate partnerships provide important revenue and in-kind
support for the festival and we provide them with carefully designed
marketing opportunities. At the 2013 Folk Fest, site activations
again included a solar-powered stage sponsored by Solar Solutions,
a charging station sponsored by MTS, and a CBC listening lounge.
Sponsored program support also included Galaxie’s support of the
Young Performers Program, Manitoba Union’s sponsorship of the
Family Area and Manitoba Public Insurance’s sponsorship of a shaded
picnic area, the shuttle bus service and assistance with the Bike Ride to
Site. We are also excited to have signed a multi-year agreement with
the Fairmont Winnipeg and look forward to their great service during
the festival and during Folk Festival in the City.
Many of our sponsorships return year after year and we are so grateful
for their ongoing support.
A gift to the Winnipeg Folk Festival supports our youth
volunteer program.

ANNUAL FUNDRAISER AND ARTISTIC
ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The annual Folk Festival in the City fundraiser took place on November
22, 2013. This year we took the spirit of the summer festival to the
Fairmont Winnipeg. Filled with festival music and ambiance and hosted
by Ace Burpee, the event was attended by 355 festival friends and raised
$52, 000 for the festival’s Education & Outreach programs.
Folk Festival in the City featured performances by Haley Carr, Mariachi
Ghost, The Bros. Landreth and Artistic Achievement Award recipient,
Ani DiFranco. Sheena Grobb, a past participant in the Young Performers
Program and the Musical Mentors Program gave a moving speech on
the impact our education and outreach programs have on young artists.
A special thanks to the many folks who made this event a success: the
volunteer committee, auction donors, all the performers, host Ace
Burpee, sponsors and event guests.

WINNIPEG FOLK FESTIVAL 2013 - 2014 ANNUAL REPORT
17
RESPONSIBILITY FOR
FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
The management of The Winnipeg Centennial Folk Festival Inc. is responsible for the preparation and presentation of the financial statements
and accompanying notes. The financial statements have been prepared in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in Canada
and reviewed and approved by the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors.
The statements have been examined by Magnus Chartered Accountants, independent external auditors, whose opinion is included herein. The
preparation of the financial information contained in the annual report necessarily involved the use of certain estimates and judgments that
have been reached based on careful assessment of data available through the organization’s information systems.
Preparation of financial information is an integral part of management’s broader responsibilities for the ongoing operations of the organization.
Management maintains an appropriate system of internal accounting controls to ensure that transactions are accurately recorded on a timely
basis, are properly approved and result in reliable financial statements.
The Audit Committee of the Board of Directors meets periodically with the financial officers of the organization and the auditors. A portion of
each meeting with the auditors takes place in the absence of the Treasurer and staff of the organization. The auditors have free access to this
committee to discuss the results of their audit work and their opinion on the adequacy of internal financial controls and the quality of financial
reporting.

INDEPENDENT AUDITORS' REPORT ON THE SUMMARY
FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
To the Members of
The Winnipeg Centennial Folk Festival Inc.
Report on the Summary Financial Statements
The accompanying summary financial statements of The Winnipeg Centennial Folk Festival Inc., which
comprise the summary statement of financial position as at January 31, 2014, the summary statement of
operations and the summary statement of changes in net assets for the year then ended, and related
note, are derived from the audited financial statements of The Winnipeg Centennial Folk Festival Inc. for
the year ended January 31, 2014. We expressed a qualified audit opinion on those financial statements in
our report dated May 7, 2014 (see below).
The summary financial statements do not contain all the disclosures required by Canadian accounting
standards for not-for-profit organizations. Reading the summary financial statements, therefore, is not a
substitute for reading the audited financial statements of The Winnipeg Centennial Folk Festival Inc.
Management's Responsibility for the Summary Financial Statements
Management is responsible for the preparation of a summary of the audited financial statements on the
basis described in Note 1 to the summary financial statements.
Auditor's Responsibility
Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the summary financial statements based on our procedures,
which were conducted in accordance with Canadian Auditing Standard (CAS) 810, Engagements to
Report on Summary Financial Statements.
Opinion
In our opinion, the summary financial statements derived from the audited financial statements of The
Winnipeg Centennial Folk Festival Inc. for the year ended January 31, 2014 are a fair summary of those
financial statements on the basis described in Note 1 to the summary financial statements. However, the
summary financial statements are subject to the equivalent scope limitation as the audited financial
statements of The Winnipeg Centennial Folk Festival Inc. for the year ended January 31, 2014.
The scope limitation on the audited financial statements of The Winnipeg Centennial Folk Festival Inc. is
described in our basis for qualified audit opinion in our report dated May 7, 2014. Our qualified audit
opinion is based on the fact that, in common with many charitable organizations, donations and
fundraising revenues are not susceptible to complete audit verification. Accordingly, our verification of
these revenues was limited to the amounts recorded in the records of the organization and we were not
able to determine whether any adjustments were necessary to donations and fundraising revenues,
excess revenue, deferred revenue, deferred contributions, deferred capital contributions and net assets.
Our qualified audit opinion states that, except for the possible effects of the described matter, the audited
financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of The Winnipeg
Centennial Folk Festival Inc. as at January 31, 2014, and the results of its operations and its cash flows
for the year then ended in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations.
