Light + Building Stand Guide 2014

DISCOVER THE
Light + Building 2014
Light + Building 2014 drew more
than 200,000 visitors from around
the world and thousands passed
through Xicato’s ‘Shack-on-theSquare' to see how the lighting
paradigm is shifting from functional
to digitally controllable and
manageable. It was clear that the
lighting industry and the building
industry are focused on Lighting 2.0
and are about to come together in
ways only previously imagined.
Xicato at Light + Building 2014
Lighting 2.0: A New Paradigm
Lighting 2.0 is, quite simply,
lighting that communicates and
interacts with both the
environment around it, and
the users that it serves.
With communications and sensors,
lighting becomes a platform that
can be used to enrich, engage and
enable experiences and
environments. Lighting 2.0 utilizes
and implements the digital nature of
LED technology and innovation to create
new, better lighting solutions.
2
The Internet of Lights
Most connected lighting platforms in the Lighting 2.0
model consist of ‘add-ons’ to existing lighting systems
thereby negating the benefits of fit for purpose design and
the reliability, control and design options that can be
achieved through integration.
Xicato believes that integrating communications, control, sensors, software
and a light source into a single module will enable a ‘community’ of lights in
and across spaces that can share information and inputs to respond to end
user desires, environmental issues and can execute business rules to
enhance commerce.
The union of software and hardware in a single package provides the
greatest design freedom both aesthetically and from a system perspective.
3
XIM: The Intelligent Module
XIM is Xicato’s Intelligent Module integrates communications, controls,
sensors, software and a light source into one powerful light engine.
Bringing the critical electronics together makes the system more reliable,
easier to integrate and provides a foundation for exploring new business
models based on lighting.
SMALLER, BETTER, FASTER – THE SILICON VALLEY WAY
Shrinking Corrected Cold Phosphor Technology® into a significantly smaller
footprint, XIM retains all the benefits of the patented phosphor cooling
technology and quality of light and created space into which chips and
electronics can be incorporated. With virtually the same footprint as the first
generation XSM, the new XIM causes us to reconsider what a light source
can be.

The Intelligent Module
Here is XIM at work: integrating sensors so that you can view real-time LED
temperature and see how light output and power can change as the
module manages its own performance. On-board ambient light and
occupancy sensors demonstrate how intelligent the module can be.
6
Echelon and Xicato
Echelon and Xicato have developed a concept of how the
Internet of Lights could come together with the Industrial
Internet of Things. In this demo Xicato’s XIM modules are
streaming lighting control commands and sensor data over
a 48VDC powerline. The lights are connected using
Echelon’s LonWorks PLC technology.
A gateway provides access to the lights and sensors on this network and it
is compatible with existing lighting control and building management
systems such as DALI, LonWorks, BacNet and KNX. This low voltage
solution with high power capabilities provides the simplest installation and
powerful lighting control capabilities. And it offers granular, localized access
to integrated and attached sensors that provide all the information needed
to manage the spaces in any building.
Now, better illumination, analytics and management data and lighting
control are within everyone’s reach.

The Xicato Story
CONSISTENCY, QUALITY AND RELIABILITY
Inconsistent light stands out and shortens
installation lifetime.
Xicato has built its reputation on these
three pillars. We have thousands of
installations around the world in which
the modules turn on every day, as they
have for years, and no one notices.
They don’t notice because the quality
of the light is superb, and the light is
consistent and reliable. Xicato
modules just don’t fail.
COLOR WARRANTY
We design and build advanced modules capable of producing better light
than that from a halogen lamp. Light that’s backed by a unique 5-Year Color
Consistency and Lumen Maintenance Warranty. In fact, we’re the only light
source provider to guarantee color performance over time, having
established the industry benchmark for initial color.
CORRECTED COLD PHOSPHOR TECHNOLOGY
The reliability of Xicato stems
directly from our patented
Corrected Cold Phosphor
Technology®. This patented
approach enables Xicato to
both ‘tune’ the system for
unparalleled consistency and
keeps the phosphor cooler,
ensuring the color and lumen
maintenance and extended
lifetimes.

The Materials Lab
OUR LIGHT, YOUR PREFERENCE
Xicato’s portfolio of light enables lighting designers, interior designers and
others to achieve the desired emotional impact for their environments.
Our Materials Lab features a wide range of finishes including textiles, steel
and wood. Each sample can be placed under the different types of light
allowing you to compare and contrast the effects of color rendering, gamut
area and color point. With a clear understanding of each light, you can
create the most compelling effect for your design.
Xicato’s Materials Lab
The STANDARD SERIES is the most efficient of the Xicato portfolio and
produces a natural light of superior quality to that of CMH and CFL.
The VIBRANT SERIES is engineered and tuned light with a larger gamut area
so that people see more saturated and vivid colors that research has shown
is often preferred when merchandise and spaces need to be enhanced.
The ARTIST SERIES has increased fidelity so colors are a bit brighter, particularly
reds which benefit from the extended red spectrum. The Artist Series is
superior to halogen lamps for color, feel and consistent appearance.

Parsons – Spot the Change
PARSONS THE NEW SCHOOL FOR DESIGN in New York
City is one of the leading institutions for art and design
education in the world.
Students in the fall semester 2013 Light-Space Art class collaborated on
design and implementation of ‘Spot the Change’. Under the direction of
assistant professor of lighting design, Glenn Shrum, Xicato and other
industry partners, the class created a series of proposals and full-scale tests
prior to fully developing the final concept.
‘Spot the Change’ demonstrates our variable perception of object color
under white light. By pressing the interactive spots located in the room,
participants initiate sequences of light change specifically calibrated to the
colors of the immersive environment. Pink and red spots appear the same
color in one lighting condition but look different under another. To see and
learn more about ‘Spot the Change’ visit www.xicato.com/parsons.

Color Lab
Learn about how we evaluate, manage and guarantee the
color consistency and performance of our modules.
Explore how spectral power distributions and
gamut areas of different light sources provide
information about the quality and nature of the
light. Learn more about the relationship of CRI
and gamut area to better understand how we
perceive color.
And if you want to
compare how colors are rendered from different
sources our custom torches allow you to plug
and play with Artist, Standard and Vibrant light
sources.
Our Color Talks are an excellent introduction to
color science. The presentation is a subset of our
CPD approved Color Science presentation which
can be delivered for organizations upon request.

Precision Optics
We invited a group of senior lighting designers to join us in New York City
last year for a day of evaluating reflectors and discussing what works, what
doesn’t and what kind of performance a top-notch reflector would offer.
After almost a year of invention and engineering, we’ve designed a new
range of precision optics that will forever raise your expectations for great
beams.
DIMMING AND 48VDC POWER SUPPLY DEMONSTRATIONS
1–10V AND DALI ARCHITECTURE
For those who would like to see how a XIM-CV system comes together
we’ve put together a live demonstration with both DALI and 1–10V
connections. It’s easy to see how the two systems compare and we’re
prepared to help you understand your options.
WHY 48VDC MAKES SENSE
XIM will be available as a constant voltage 48VDC module and in our demo
we will show the
flexibility and benefits
that can be achieved
with this configuration.
