CÁCERES: HISTORICAL DATA ABOUT THE CITY The area taken up by Cáceres and its surroundings was already inhabited in the Prehistoric epoch, as the findings located in the nearby Cave of Maltravieso manifest. It was here that interesting thirty-thousand-years-old painting samples which date from the Upper Paleolithic were found. In the Roman epoch, in a plce known as “the old Cáceres”, Cecilio Vetelio founded the Castra Caecilia camp not far from the city around 78 B.C. Besides, some authors place Castra Servilia in the monumental part of the city. It was over Castra Servilia that Norba Caesarina was founded by Lucio Cornelio Balbo towards 25 B.C. The family conflicts between Leovigildo and his son Hermenegido in the Visigothic epoch brought about the decline of Norba. However, with the invasion of the Arabs, and, above all, during the Almoravid occupation, Cáceres, which was known as Hizn Qazris, acquired strategic importance again. It was in the 12th century that, as a result of the Almohads’ arrival, the walled enclosure of the villa was rebuilt, thus reusing the previous remains of the roman walls. Geraldo Sempavor freed the city from the Moorish control temporarily. It was lost again and conquered by Fernando II of León in 1169. Nonetheless, even though he left in the hands of the so-called “Fratres de Cáceres” (a congregation of knights), they lost the villa to the Almohads until Alfonso IX of León eventually conquered it on the 23 rd of April in 1229. In fact, the 23rd of April is the festivity of San Jorge, the Patron Saint of the city. Cáceres, which had become part of the crown in the late 13 th century, was occupied by aristocratic families from the North of the Peninsula. They built palaces and stately houses, buildings that comprised a large part of the monumental part of Cáceres. The tops of some of these palaces were cut off because its owners did not advocate the cause of Isabel of Castile in her fight for the Crown of Castile. It was in the 16th century that the monumental group of the city was completed, almost once and for all, through the construction of palaces and stately houses. They have the typical traits of the type of buildings of defensive nature and show influences from the Renaissance style. Capital of the North of Extremadura and of the province of Cáceres, nowadays this locality ranks second in Extremadura as regards population. Besides, it is an important university city in Extremadura and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.
