PROJECTS
Graduate Projects
University of Southern California
• Expedia Hotel Search Engine Data Mining
Fall 2014
Investigated users’ booking decisions with respect to their attributes and search criterion by conducting
user clusters analysis. Provided recommendation on how to improve the booking rate based on the
discovered user patterns.
• Online Shopping with Responsive Web Design
Summer 2014
Developed an online shopping website that leveraged a few modern techniques, such as AJAX, jQuery,
jQuery Mobile and CodeIgniter to enhance the user experience.
• Weenix Kernel Implementation
Summer 2014
Implemented the essential components for a kernel of a UNIX-like operating system, including process
management, file system and memory management.
• Next Generation Climate Architecture, NGCA
Spring 2014
Tackled the complex software architecture by investigating its underlying energy consumption, memory usage and latency of execution. Performed reverse engineering and architectural recovery on the
NGCA as a key to future evolution.
• University Map Querying and Locating Using Oracle Spatial Database
Spring 2014
Developed a Java application that queried a university map based on window, nearest neighbors, with-in
distance and so on.
• WheelBot Using ReMod3D for Intelligent Map Learning and Route Planning
Fall 2013
Wrote C++ programs that simulated a robot exploring a 3D world through object searching, route
planning and map learning using DFS and A* algorithms.
Research Projects in Academia
Research Center for Information Technology Innovation, Academia Sinica
Advisor: Dr. Yen-Yu Lin
• Per-cluster Ensemble Kernel Learning for Multi-modal Image Clustering with Group-dependent
Feature Selection
IEEE TMM, 2014
Developed an algorithm for cross-space feature selection to characterize distinct multi-modal data precisely with their discriminant features, where multiple kernel learning (MKL) was leveraged. Generalized the optimization framework to semi-supervised learning that supported pairwise constraints.
• Anomalous Event Detection with Moving Camera
Reconstructed the 3D model for road scenes based on optical flow and focus of expansion (FOE),
coupled with kernel density estimation (KDE), so that abnormal flows can be retrieved and further
analyzed.
Undergraduate Research Projects
Department of Electrical Engineering, Yuan Ze University
Advisor: Prof. Duan-Yu Chen
• Intelligent Face-based Mobile Images Categorization
JISE, 2013
Gender Recognition System and App. on Portable Device
CCL Technical Journal, 2011
Resource-limited Intelligent Photo Management on Mobile Platforms
IEEE ICMLC, 2011
Developed a gender recognition system, where features were retrieved efficiently by only partiallydecoding the images for resource-limited platforms. Implemented an Android app for images categorization that featured people counting and gender recognition.
Undergraduate Course Projects
• Lane Detection Warning System
Spring 2011
Reconstructed the road lanes on images captured by a vehicle-mounted camera based on Radon Transform and k-means clustering.
• Content-based Image Retrieval
Spring 2010
Developed an image query system, where color-based (e.g., RGB, HSV) and gradient-based (e.g., edge,
SIFT) image descriptors were leveraged to tackle diverse scenes and objects.
