Materials for Sustainability Jianyu Liang Abstract In this talk, Dr. Liang will discuss the challenges of our sustainable future and the advantages of nanotechnology in addressing some of the challenges. She will introduce the WPI team’s work on developing nanomaterials for energy applications, such as the use of carbon nanotubes and binary metal nanocatalysts for fuel cell applications and the core-shell graphene-TiO2 nanoparticles as electrode materials for Li-ion batteries. She will also introduce her group’s new initiative on green manufacturing of construction materials from industrial wastes and byproducts. Biosketch Jianyu Liang (Ph.D. Brown University, 2005) is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Massachusetts. She has also served as a guest researcher in at Army Research Laboratory during her sabbatical leave in 2013-2014 academic year. At WPI, she established the Nanoscale Materials and Nanomanufacturing Laboratory for graduate and undergraduate research and created related courses such as “Introduction to Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology” and “Undergraduate Nanobiotechnology Laboratory Experience”. Her current research work includes nanomaterials fabrication and characterization, cold spray of nanostructured metallic materials, materials and systems for sustainable energy, and green manufacturing of useful materials from industrial wastes and byproducts. Dr. Liang has authored over 60 articles in the areas of nanotechnology, materials science, and electrochemistry and gave over 100 invited talks, seminars, presentations and speeches. She is a reviewer of multiple federal programs such as NSF Materials Research Science and Engineering Center program, and professional journals including Science.
