HISTORY
The community of Whale Cove,
or Tikirarjuaq (long point), is
nestled within a bay, along the
western shore of Hudson Bay.
This community was initially
settled by three distinct Inuit
groups (one inland and two
coastal), who came to the area
during the settlement development of the 1950s.

WILDLIFE
As the name suggests, Whale
Cove is your destination if
you’ve ever wanted to experience beluga whales in the
wild. The whales gather near
the community in the fall every
year, so be sure to ask about
boating opportunities if you
visit this time of year.
The community is also on the
polar bear migration from
Manitoba and bears often pass
close to town in the spring and
fall.
HIKING
Atop a hill overlooking the
community is a whimsical
whale’s tail monument built in
1967. The monument
celebrates the close association of Whale Cove residents
with the resources of the sea.
ARTS AND CRAFTS
Whale Cove is noted for its fine
carvings, and more recently,
the skill of its seamstresses,
who can still produce traditional Inuit clothing of hide
and fur.
