Business and real estate in Munich
Munich is one of the most attractive business hubs in Europe. Its economic
strength is rooted in a balanced mix of industries, forward-looking clusters
and a high quality of life. Key engines of growth such as automotive
engineering and information and communication technology are ramping
up their already powerful position in the city – in areas such as the Internet
of Things, autonomous driving and electromobility. Numerous technology
centers, incubators, accelerators and events are reinforcing this
development.
Munich is also one of the biggest commercial property locations in Europe.
Office turnover totaling around 780,000 m2 in 2016 marked a 3 % gain
year on year and was the best result since 2011. In the course of the year,
the vacancy rate edged down 0.8 percentage points to 3 %, equivalent to
roughly 690,000 m2 of unoccupied space. Toward year-end, top rents
stood at EUR 35.00 / m2, down 5 % on the previous year. The average rent

for the year declined by 2 % to EUR 16 m2 as letting activity gravitated
toward less expensive outlying areas.

Munich at MIPIM
This year, the City of Munich will take part in the MIPIM property trade
show in Cannes, southern France, for the 22nd time. As ever, the stand will
host fascinating panel discussions and round-table talks on topical issues
relating to the Munich market. Each day, the tone will be set by inspiring
keynote addresses by respected professors of architecture, who will
address analyses of and visions for the Bavarian capital. Other topics will
include the development of inner-city quarters (such as on the
Nockherberg) and the new Siemens headquarters, which has been
nominated for the MIPIM awards. Each year, these awards are given in
recognition of the most architecturally fascinating, innovative and
sustainable buildings in the world. Siemens' new headquarters is one of
four finalists in the category “Best Innovative Green Building”. At the show,
winners will be picked from 214 submissions across a total of eleven
categories.
Munich and its 30 property industry partners will be based on stand
R7.G16 in the Riviera 7 hall. Three representatives of the City of Munich –
Deputy Mayor and head of the Department of Labor and Economic
Development Josef Schmid (standing in for Mayor Dieter Reiter), City
Councilor Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Merk and Head of the Department of
Communal Services Axel Markwardt – will be on hand to provide
information about current projects.
