Study Skills Tutorials: How to write a term paper (FSS 2017)
Dear students,
If you are planning to write your first term paper to get credits for a Proseminar course, you have to
attend the Study Skills Tutorials. There you will get information on how to write papers at the department of English Studies. The tutorials are mandatory for all students of Anglistik/Amerikanistik
who are writing their first term paper (literary studies and linguistics). Copies of the certificates
have to be attached to the term paper when you hand it in.
Please read this info sheet thoroughly and completely. If you have any questions concerning the
Study Skills Tutorials which are not addressed below, do not hesitate to ask the tutors. They will be
happy to help you. You will find a list of the exact dates, locations and tutors at the end of this document.
Note for international students: If you are planning to write a term paper in literary studies or in
linguistics at the University of Mannheim, you too need to attend the tutorials. If you are not sure
what you need to do, please contact Luis Özer ([email protected]).
A. What are Study Skills Tutorials and who has to go there?
In the tutorials you will learn how to find a topic for your first term paper (Module 1), how to search
for and find relevant literature (Module 2), and what the appropriate form and structure of a term
paper looks like (Module 3).
To get a certificate for each module you have to
1. register in time (see section B on registration)
2. watch a short video in preparation for the course (available in ILIAS)
3. complete a worksheet and send your results to your tutor (contact info in section C)
4. attend a 90 minutes tutorial (dates and rooms in section C of this document)
We offer a limited number of tutorials. Each session has a maximum of 12 participants. If you wait
with registration until the last session, it is quite likely that you will not get a place anymore and
consequently cannot submit a paper this term. So please register early!
The tutorials will be offered in consecutive order during the following time blocks:

B. How do you register for the tutorials?
1. Preparation
Join the course ANG 316 Study Skills Tutorials, "Kurs A, 1. PG" on ILIAS, independently of which
day of the week you will want to come. You will find the preparatory videos, additional material and
the worksheets there. The worksheets have to be downloaded from ILIAS, worked through, and
handed in on time. Always bring a print-out of your worksheet with you to the tutorial. As part of
your preparation for module 3 you also have to read the department’s style guide (ABCs of Style).
Please Note: We sometimes receive completed worksheets based on materials from previous semesters. These do not count! You must submit the current worksheets from the ILIAS folder for this
semester!
2. Registration
Send an e-mail with your completed worksheet to your tutor (see e-mail addresses below). Worksheets will only be accepted as text documents (PDF, doc, docx, odt), not as pictures. That means
no photos from your mobile phone. To allocate your application correctly, the reference line of your
email has to contain the following information:
Study Skills, your name, the date of the tutorial
You have to hand in the worksheet no later than three days before the date you want to attend the
tutorial. If you submit the worksheet later, it will not be considered. (Example: if you want to attend
a tutorial on Wednesday, you have to submit the worksheet by Sunday at the latest.)
3. Registration Confirmation
After the registration period is over (i.e. not immediately after submission!), you will receive a short
confirmation email that the worksheet has been handed in successfully and that you are registered
for the tutorial. You do not have to register anywhere else. Again: Despite a punctual submission,
the tutorial might already be full. The tutor will notify you if that is the case and you will be asked to
join a later tutorial. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you do not rely on getting a
spot in the very last tutorial session.
4. Certificate of Participation
At the end of the tutorial you will directly receive a certificate of participation. You have to attach
copies of the certificates to your term paper:
- Term paper in Literary Studies: certificates of module 1, 2, and 3a,
- Term paper in Linguistics: certificates of module 1, 2, and 3b.
Please note: If you are more than 10 minutes late for a tutorial, you will not receive a certificate of
participation.
