Dear colleagues, friends and guests:
Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a thrombotic
microangiopathy defined by thrombocytopenia, nonimmune microangiopathic hemolytic anemia and acute
renal failure.
The designation of atypical HUS (aHUS) is used to refer
to those cases in which an infection by Shiga-like toxin-producing could be excluded with a poor outcome.
About 60% of patients with aHUS have dysregulation of
the alternative complement pathway. The kidney is the
main target organ, but other organs are also affected
and therefore most of the patients with aHUS need to be
treated in an interdisciplinary approach.
Studies performed in the last two decades have documented that hyperactivation of the complement system
is the pathogenetic effector mechanism leading to the
endothelial damage and the microvascular thrombosis in
aHUS. Early diagnosis and identification of underlying pathogenetic mechanism allow specific support measures
and therapies. In clinical trials in patients with aHUS, complement inhibition by eculizumab administration leads to
a rapid and sustained normalization of hematological parameters with improvement in long-term outcome.
To better understand new pathogenetic mechanisms
of aHUS and learn more about recent therapeutic opportunities to treat this disease in the interdisciplinary
approach we are proud to welcome Prof. Remuzzi, one of
the best known and leading clinical scientist in this field,
for this conference to discuss with him recent clinical
cases presenting at our hospital.
We are looking forward to welcome you for this conference.
