Peter( Swarte( was( born( in( The( Netherlands.( He( started( to( be(
interested( in( sound( reproduction( in( his( very( youth( starting( with(
building( radio’s.( In( the( beginning( small( ones( and( later( on( large(
super( heterodynes.( After( visiting( an( international( meeting( on(
electronics(and(audio,(he(found(out(that(high(fidelity(sound(was(his(
passion.(After(building(a(lot(of(amplifiers,(loudspeakers(and(record(
players( and( after( finishing( his( secondary( school( he( wanted( to(
become(a(developer(of(audio(equipment:(
(
He( began( his( professional( career( as( a( developer( of( professional( microphones( and(
loudspeakers( at( Philips( Electronics( in( Eindhoven,( The( Netherlands,( in( 1964.( He( received( a(
B.Sc.( degree( in( physics( and( developed( several( types( of( magnetoFdynamic,( piezoelectric,(
electrodynamic( and( electret( transducers( for( commercial,( professional( and( security(
applications.( In( 1977( he( began( working( as( an( applications( engineer( for( professional( audio(
systems.(In(this(capacity(he(educated(and(supported(sales(and(project(engineers(worldwide(
within(the(Philips(Electronics(organization(in(the(design(and(realization(of(emergency(sound(
systems,( e.g.( in( sports( stadiums,( emporiums,( airports,( and( congress( centers.( He( earned(
patents(for(active(absorption(and(reflection(systems(and(capacitive(transducers.(

From( 1987,( as( group( manager,( he( gathered( extensive( application( knowledge( about(
worldwide(data(networks,(videoconference(systems(and(digital(audio(communications.(He(
worked( together( with( scientists( for( the( application( of( an( automatic( interpretation( system(
where(the(phenomena(of(speech(and(intelligibility(were(of(crucial(importance.(

Since( the( beginning( of( 1998,( he( has( been( an( independent( consultant( for( acoustics( and(
electro( acoustics.( Together( with( scientists( of( the( research( lab( at( Philips( Electronics( he(
developed( the( "dormant( Base"( ("dB")( equipment( for( the( elimination( of( annoying( sound(
emitted(by(discotheques(and(entertainment(centers.(Swarte(teaches(a(postgraduate(course(
in(electro(acoustics(in(Belgium.(He(was(vice(chairman(and(later(on(chair(of(the(Netherlands(
Section( till( 2006.( In( 2001( he( was( the( chairman( for( the( 110th( AES( Convention( and( he(
occupied(this(chair(again(in(2003(for(the(114th(AES(Convention(as(well(as(for(the(124th(AES(

Diemer( de( Vries( was( born( January( 3,( 1945( in( Weststellingwerf,(
Friesland,( The( Netherlands.( He( got( his( primary( and( secondary(
education( at( schools( in( Arnhem,( Heemstede( and( Haarlem.( After(
receiving( the( gymnasiumFα( and( Fβ( certificates( he( started( the(
Applied(Physics(studies(at(Delft(University(of(Technology(in(1963.(
He( received( his( MSc( degree( in( 1971( on( a( thesis( on( architectural(
acoustics.(After(graduation,(he(joined(the(staff(of(the(Laboratory(
of((later:(Seismics(and)(Acoustics.(During(his(career(as(a(university(
researcher(he(worked(on(several(projects(in(room(acoustics,(building(acoustics(and(seismic(
signal(processing.(In(1984,(he(received(a(PhD(degree(on(a(thesis(in(the(latter(field.(Until(his(
retirement(in(January(2010(he(coordinated,(as(an(associate(professor,(the(research(on(array(
technologyFbased(wave(field(analysis(and(synthesis(in(room(acoustics.(By(participating(with(
his( group( in( national( and( international( projects( (such( as( CARROUSO,( 2001F2003)( he(
significantly(contributed(to(the(breakFthrough(of(this(concept(–(introduced(by(Berkhout(in(
the(1980s(–(all(over(the(world.(During(the(last(years,(he(was(involved(in(the(development(of(

In( 1976,( he( was( a( visiting( researcher( at( the( Institut( Teknologi( Bandung,( Indonesia,( as(
supervisor(of(a(NUFFIC(cooperation(project.(From(1981(until(his(retirement,(he(also(taught(
at(the(Royal(Conservatory(of(Music(in(The(Hague,(at(the(department(of(music(registration(
and( sonology.( From( 1985( until( 1987,( he( combined( his( work( at( the( university( with( a( partF
time( consultancy( function( at( the( Institute( of( Applied( Physics( TPDFTNO.( As( such,( he( was(
