tourismnichewithover1Miotoursannuallysold,takinginpoorneighbourhoodsandslumsinthelarger
citiesofSouthAfrica,RiodeJaneiroandMumbai.
Frenzelinvestigatesthiscontroversialpasttime,reflectingontheethicaldebatesittriggersandthemoral
ambiguityinvolved.Questingashorthandrejectionofslummingasvoyeuristic,hehighlightsthe
persuasivenessoftravelpracticesandmobilitiesthattakerelativelywealthyvisitorsintoneighbourhoodsof
thepoor,includingvolunteering,activismandresearchtourism.
Frenzelunderstandscontemporaryslumtourismasasocialpracticecloselytiedtoattemptsatmanaging
inequalityandpovertyinanemergenttransnationalcareregime.Inthebook,tourismisrecastasa
productive,andpotentiallyrebelliousforcethataffectsurbanplacemakingandintervenesinlocalsocial
conflicts.Tourism’sproductivity,orvalorisation,mayenhanceandamplifylocalstrugglesforrecognition
andresources,butisalsopronetobeingcapturedinurbanregenerationschemesandgentrification.
