Some topics in sub-Riemannian geometry
Abstract:
By imposing non-holonomic constraints on the possible directions of motion allowed on a
Riemannian manifold, we obtain a peculiar class of geometrical structures, which is the subject
of sub-Riemannian geometry. In this talk, we will provide a gentle introduction to this rapidly
expanding field. We will in particular discuss some selected topics, where the differences with
respect to the classical Riemannian world are more striking. The following subjects will be
covered I. geodesics, II. balls, III. dimension and IV. curvature.
