PROJECT TRACEABLE MEASUREMENTS FOR MONITORING CRITICAL POLLUTANTS UNDER THE EUROPEAN WATER FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE (WFD 2000/60/EC) URL: http://www.emrp-waterframeworkdirective.bam.de DURATION 2011 - 2014 PROJECT TYPE The Joint Research Project (JRP) ENV08 “Traceable measurements for monitoring critical pollutants under the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) 2000/60/EC” has been conducted under the European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP) (https://www.euramet.org/index.php?id=emrp). It received funding from the EMRP participating countries within EURAMET and the European Union. SCOPE The WFD specifies a list of 33 priority water pollutants. For these substances, Environmental Quality Standards (EQS), equivalent to the maximum allowable concentrations, had been defined at very low levels. EQS values refer to the whole water body, i.e. include contaminants which are associated to suspended solids or colloids present in the natural water. For several priority pollutants primary analytical methods capable of measuring the target analytes at EQS level in natural water are still missing. The project has developed and validated such methods for three selected compounds, namely Tributyltin (TBT), Polybrominated Diphenylether (PBDE) and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH). Furthermore, the JRP has developed concepts for the preparation of reference materials (RM) which contain the target analytes at EQS level in a matrix as close as possible to natural water. Such materials serve as a Quality Assurance tool for monitoring laboratories to assess their measurement capabilities. The JRP therefore helps to implement the WFD and to improve the quality of measurements carried out by test laboratories in the field of water analysis and helps to achieve the final objective of WFD, namely good quality of surface, ground and coastal water in the EU by 2015.
