Background
For the first time since its accession in 2004, the
smallest EU Member State Malta will chair the Council
of the European Union from 1 January to 30 June 2017.
The current Trio-Presidency of the Netherlands,
Slovakia and Malta has agreed upon long-term goals
and a common agenda in order to set priorities for the
upcoming 18 months. Based on the trio-programme,
each of the three countries is preparing its own detailed
six-month programme.
Malta will take the EU rotating presidency in a time of
fundamental change and great challenges and will
therefore work intensively towards better coordination
and cooperation between the Member States. It will
push forward the implementation of the Bratislava
Roadmap adopted in September 2016 in order to
strengthen the European project.
As a Mediterranean country, Malta will place the
strategic focus on the 3 M’s: Maritime, Mediterranean
and Migration, which includes the fostering of the
Partnership for Research and Innovation in the
Mediterranean Area (PRIMA) funded by the EU
framework programme Horizon2020.
We hereby have the pleasure of inviting you to join our
conference with policy experts and representatives from
Malta, sharing their insights on priorities and
challenges of the upcoming Maltese Presidency of the
Council of the European Union.

Hintergrund
Vom 1. Januar bis 30. Juni 2017 übernimmt Malta den
Vorsitz des Rates der Europäischen Union. Das mit den
Niederlanden, der Slowakei und Malta gemeinsam
verabschiedete Programm für eine 18-monatige Laufzeit
von Dezember 2015 bis Juni 2017 beinhaltet
langfristige Ziele und eine gemeinsame Agenda. Auf der
Grundlage dieses Programms bereitet jedes der drei
Länder sein eigenes detailliertes Sechsmonatsprogramm vor.
Die Maltesische Ratspräsidentschaft fällt in eine Zeit
grundlegender Veränderungen und großer Aufgaben.
Malta wird sich intensiv für eine bessere Koordination
und Zusammenarbeit unter den Mitgliedstaaten
einsetzen und die Umsetzung des im September 2016
beschlossenen Bratislava-Fahrplans vorantreiben, um
das europäische Projekt wieder zu stärken.
Als Mittelmeeranrainer setzt Malta eigene strategische
Akzente in den Bereichen Seefahrt, Mittelmeer und
Migration. Hierzu gehört auch die Förderung der
Partnerschaft für Forschung und Innovation der
Mittemeeranrainer (PRIMA), eine Initiative, die durch
das EU-Rahmenprogramm Horizon2020 finanziert wird.
Wir laden Sie herzlich ein, mit Politikern und Experten
über die europäische Agenda unter der Maltesischen
EU-Ratspräsidentschaft zu diskutieren.
