INTERNATIONAL NEWS German Supermarket Giants Demand Return to GMO-Free Fed Poultry It was announced last Thursday that the German supermarkets, with a broad consensus, recently demanded from the German Poultry Association (ZDG) to stop using GMO feed for both egg and poultry meat production, starting from 1st January 2015. That is the date when the retailers want to receive GMO-free fed products again, meaning poultry suppliers will have to rush to get their feed supply chains free from GMO feed once more. In February this year, the ZDG unilaterally declared that it was stopping using GM-free animal feed, following similar moves by other associations in England and Denmark. The reasons provided for the step after over a decade of GMO-free feeding were an alleged shortage of GMO-free soya, the risk of contamination, and the associated legal uncertainty. However, following close consultation with Brazilian authorities, the German supermarkets have realized that the reasons given by ZDG do not stand up: There is clearly enough Brazilian GMO-free feed in the system to supply Europe’s needs. “By taking a stand against the biotech and poultry industries, German supermarkets have proven that it’s possible to respond to consumer demand for poultry that is fed non-GMO feed and in doing so, force significant changes to the supply chain despite pressure from Monsanto and industry trade associations,” said Ronnie Cummins, international director of the Organic Consumers Association. US poultry producers have threatened to block the renewal of the Act in the US Congress if SA does not allow some of their products to enter the domestic market, reports Business Day. SA applies anti-dumping duties on the import of US bone-in chicken portions and while these will remain in place in future, there was scope to allow a specified quantity of chicken leg quarters from the US to enter the country, CEO of the South African Poultry Association Kevin Lovell said on Friday. AGOA provides SA with duty-free access into the US and it is due to expire on 30 September 2015. US President Barack Obama and the US administration both support the extension of the AGOA ACT and South Africa’s continued inclusion in it, but the ultimate decision is for the US Congress to take. Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies discussed the US poultry association’s concerns when he went to Washington DC in August and has assisted in getting the associations from the two countries to the negotiating table. According to Business Day any decision would have to undergo administrative processes, which Mr. Lovell hoped would be concluded before Congress. "Any concessions we might make would be dependent on AGOA being renewed. If the renewal fails, then the concession will fall away." While the talks have been friendly, the issue is a delicate one for local producers who have been engaged in ongoing battles to protect their industry against cheap imports.
