Peter Schneider, geboren 1940 in Lübeck, verbrachte seine frühe Kindheit in Königsberg und in Sachsen. Die
ersten Nachkriegsjahre lebte er bei Garmisch-Partenkirchen, bis die Familie 1950 nach Freiburg zog. Dort, in
München und Berlin studierte er Germanistik, Geschichte und Philosophie. 1967/68 avancierte Schneider zu
einem der Wortführer der 68er-Bewegung und wurde als solcher auch in Italien gefeiert. Nach Abschluss seines
Studiums mit dem 1. Staatsexamen wurde ihm 1973 wegen seiner politischen Aktivitäten der Eintritt ins
Referendariat verweigert. Mit Lenz (1973), das zum Kultbuch der enttäuschten Linken avancierte, gelang ihm
der Durchbruch als Autor. Seitdem schrieb Schneider zahlreiche Romane und Erzählungen, die teilweise in
20 Sprachen übersetzt wurden, sowie Drehbücher, Reportagen, Essays, Reden und Artikel für deutsche und
internationale Medien. Seit 1985 unterrichtet er als Gastdozent und Writer in Residence an amerikanischen
Universitäten, u.a. in Stanford, Princeton und Harvard. Peter Schneider ist Mitglied des PEN-Zentrums
Deutschland. Er erhielt u.a. 1979 ein Villa-Massimo-Stipendium und ist vom 1. September bis 30. November
2016 Stipendiat der Kulturakademie Tarabya in Istanbul. Er lebt in Berlin.
Peter Schneider 1940, Almanya Lübeck doğumludur. Erken çocukluk yıllarını Königsberg ve Saksonya’da
geçirdi. Savaş sonrası birkaç yıl Garmisch-Partenkirchen’de yaşadıktan sonra ailesiyle birlikte 1950’de
Freiburg’a taşındı. Freiburg, Münih ve Berlin’de Alman dili ve edebiyatı, tarih ve felsefe eğitimi aldı. 1967-68
yıllarında 68 Gençlik Hareketi’nde sözcülük yapmış, İtalya’da da aynı unvanla tanınmıştır. 1973 yılında eğitimi
bittikten sonra siyasi eğilimi sebebiyle staj yapmasına izin verilmedi. Hayal kırıklığına uğramış solcular için kült
haline gelen Lenz (1973) isimli kitabıyla yazarlığa adım attı. O zamandan beri birçok öykü ve roman yazmıştır,
eserleri yaklaşık yirmi dile çevrilmiş olan yazar, Alman ve uluslararası medya organları için senaryo, röportaj,
deneme ve makaleler yazmıştır. 1985 yılından Stanford, Princeton ve Harvard gibi Amerikan üniversitelerinde
misafir doçentlik ve yazarlık yapmaktadır. Almanya PEN Yazarlar Derneği üyesi olan Peter Schneider, 1979’da
Villa-Massimo Bursu kazandı. Ayrıca 1 Eylül 2016’dan 30 Kasım 2016’ya kadar İstanbul, Tarabya Kültür
Akademisi’nde bursiyer olacaktır. Berlin’de yaşamaktadır.
Peter Schneider was born in 1940 in Lübeck and spent his early childhood in Konigsberg and Saxony. After a
few years in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the post war period, he moved to Freiburg with his family. He studied
German language and literature, history and philosophy in Freiburg, Munich and Berlin. In 1967-68, he became
a spokesperson for '68 movement, and was celebrated as such even in Italy. After completing his studies in 1973,
he was turned down for a trainee teaching position because of his political activities. He took his first step as a
writer with his novel “Lenz” (1973), which became a cult work among disillusioned people of the left. Since
then he has written many novels and short stories, and his works have been translated into as many as
20 languages. He has written screenplays, as well as essays and articles for various German and international
media. Since 1985, he has been a visiting associate professor and writer-in-residence at American universities
such as Stanford, Princeton and Harvard. Peter Schneider is a member of PEN Germany. He was awarded the
Villa-Massimo Fellowship in 1979, and will be a Tarabya Cultural Academy fellow in Istanbul, from September
2016 to November 2016. He lives in Berlin.
