We are very excited to grant our first development prize together with our partners EWA – European Women’s Audiovisual Network. We continue to passionately believe, despite tough times for the financing of feature-length creative documentaries, that cross-border collaboration is the only way forward and that the work of independent producers forms the backbone of the European audiovisual industry. Creatives are again taking part in our three-day DOK Hackathon. We selected filmmakers, designers and coders amongst others to take part in this intense experience. Beginning on Monday before the festival starts, these eager artists will sit together, brainstorm ideas, from teams, design a concept, get serious, get help from tutors, scratch some wild ideas, brainstorm some more, drink coffee, hack, code, cry laugh, enjoy, sleep, panic, refocus and finally develop an awesome prototype in just 72 hours, all the while being encouraged by mentors and facilitators of our partners from !DROPS. But wait, there is more… Prototype Jam The concept is slightly different here. First ideas are already brought to the table, the general outlines already written. So all the available time goes directly into the actual realization of those ideas. Facilitated by our partners from !DROPS, the goal is to work together to create a market-pitchable project. The Prototype Jam is realized with additional support by !F Lab. Both workshops unite under one premise: there is little time to create something amazing. Nevertheless, this is exactly where the fun comes in: to design and create with limited means is always a rewarding and illuminating challenge. We thank the Interactive Media Foundation and Transmedia Mitteldeutschland for their indispensable support. 21 When Mon 31 Oct 09:00 until Wed 2 Nov 17:00 Where Halle 14, Spinnerei Language English Access Invitation only Facilitation Matthias van Compernolle, !DROPS, Brussels Bart Cornille, !DROPS, Brussels Mentors Sandra Gaudenzi, !F Lab, London Erika Grijalva, Harmony Institute, New York Filip Fastenakels, VRT, Brussels Mike Robbins, Helios Design, Toronto Stephan Schüritz, Honig Studios, Berlin Jiannis Sotiropoulos, Honig Studios, Berlin Oskar Rough, Coding Expert, Berlin Jonas Witsch, IMF, Berlin DOK Hackathon is part of the DOK Nachwuchs programme and realised in cooperation with the SLM . 22 Interactive Networking DOK Hackathon : Pitch and Drinks DOK Exchange After three days of intense work during the DOK Hackathon and the Prototype Jam, there is one last effort to be made. Each group will present their project during a pitch to the audience and an international jury. What will it be? A glorious mating of a webdoc and webgame? A Virtual Reality experience which profoundly alters your perception of reality? Maybe it will be something entirely different and new. One thing is for sure: you will be surprised to see what eager artists can accomplish in just three days of intense work. In a fast-paced procedure, we expect to see around six different projects, presented to a curious audience and jury alike. After three days of (probably) little sleep, we would like to welcome the artists in a friendly and network-centered atmosphere, to bask in the glory of their accomplishments. Come early and save yourself a seat in the front row, we expect it to be crowded and extremely entertaining. The best part of it? After the presentation, there will be drinks and snacks, kindly hosted by DREFAbrik! With our Animadoc Case Studies we want to raise professionalism and audience awareness of the great potential that lies in the combination of different techniques and genres. This year’s panel presents case studies from different outstanding projects: Remo Scherrer’s Whatever the Weather is a very moving short about alcohol addiction and child neglect. The film Oscar by Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre is a portrait of the pianist Oscar Peterson. The filmmaker is experienced in animated documentaries and mixes archival material and animation sequences to form a strong visual statement. With Chris the Swiss the director Anja Kofmel will present work in progress on her animated documentary feature which tackles the topic of Swiss mercenaries by investigating a very personal family story. When Wed 2 Nov 14:00 – 15:30 Where Polnisches Institut Language English Access Accredited guests welcome Moderator Annegret Richter, DOK Leipzig Panelists Anja Kofmel, filmmaker, Zürich Carola Kutzner, Zeitraumfilm, Adliswil Marie-Josée SaintPierre, filmmaker, Montreal In 2017 ARTE will celebrate 25 years of creative programming for audiences across Europe and the globe. Despite this long legacy of public broadcasting, the channel is still looking forwards: experimenting with filmmakers and storytellers in order to reach new audiences, and developing content not just for broadcast television but other media including the web. Life To Come – featured in the Official Selection for DOK Leipzig in both cinemas and our DOK Neuland exhibition space – is an example of the bi-media production strategies currently being explored by the broadcaster. But ARTE also offers many other slots that may give you the opportunities to make multiple versions of your films also for different international markets and engage new talent or business models. We’ll look at the ZDF/ARTE co-production John Berger or The Art of Looking on the relationship between commissing editor and creative producer. And how much should we pay to access it? Film archives globally are suffering from government budget cuts, and some governments have already carelessly privatized their collections. Changing borders, political alliances and the digital revolution have created new challenges for producers and self-proclaimed accidental archivists. Three professionals working in this area will discuss the high political stakes and fascinating world of archive research and rights negotiation. Not to be missed! When Wed 2 Nov 16:30 – 18:00 Where Zeitgeschichtliches Forum Leipzig Language English Access Accredited guests welcome Nobody knows what happens when the famous Leth family from Denmark takes over the stage but DOK Leipzig is proud to try. Jørgen Leth, the leading figure in experimental documentary films hosts for the very first time a session with his daughter Karoline Leth, the multi-award winning producer of documentaries and drama series, and his son Asger Leth, a director of star-studded Hollywood films. But many producers and filmmakers are taking their destiny into their own hands, often reaching wide audiences outside the traditional markets. But the best-researched and executed marketing strategy can unravel fast if you don’t have the technical know-how and skill to actually deliver the physical film for screening. And if you’re planning to show your film on the big screen, chances are you’ll need a DCP to get the very best quality. Are your tech skills the only thing between you and an indie release of your film? Don’t have a spare 10.000 € around for a professional to convert files for you? Paul Müller-Hahl, technical coordinator at DOK Leipzig, will take you step-by-step through the process of creating your own DCP using open source software. This is a not-to-miss session for all independent filmmakers at DOK Leipzig, students and veterans alike! When Sat 5 Nov 11:00 – 13:00 Where Polnisches Institut Language English Access Accredited guests welcome Host Paul Müller-Hahl, DOK Leipzig For Bill Morrison the filmstrip is an actor. It represents the physical embodiment of cinema. Like an actor, it conveys dreams and memories. It also has a natural lifespan that shows signs of decay towards its end. Chemical processes give rise to bubbles and crystals in the film emulsion and allow new, ghostly visual worlds to emerge haphazardly. Damage done to the fragile material tells stories that were not contemplated in the original film. For over 20 years the New York-based filmmaker has been dedicating himself to this orphaned, unnoticed “body of film” with all its personal traces of aging. He has found a new way of presenting silent film dramas and documentary footage from the early days of cinema in collaboration with important figures of contemporary music – Michael Gordon, Gavin Bryars, Steve Reich, Kronos Quartett, et al. His artistic work was honoured with a comprehensive exhibition at the MoMA in New York in 2014/15. In his master class Bill Morrison will provide an insight into found footage research, present the living being that is the physical exposure holder, and explain, using examples from his own films, that special moment when the material itself becomes the narrator. DOK Leipzig will be showing Bill Morrison’s masterpiece Decasia as part of Disobedient Images. 33 When Wed 2 Nov 10:00 – 12:00 Where Polnisches Institut Language English Access Accredited guests welcome Moderators André Eckardt, DOK Leipzig The Master Class with Bill Morrison is part of the DOK Nachwuchs programme and realised in cooperation with the SLM . 34 Master Class Talk Marina Razbezhkina DOK and Anima Talks Of the four programmes in the Homage Marina Razbezhkina, one is tailor-made for her students. For Razbezhkina is not just a scriptwriter and director; since 2008 she has been head of the Moscow School of Documentary Film and Documentary Theatre in Moscow, which she founded together with Mikhail Ugarov. There she has established a school that is unpretentious and nonhierarchical, also in the aesthetic sense. She fosters the talents of young people who are often new to the profession and come from the provinces. The filmmaking she teaches is direct and personal, shot with a handheld camera and daring to enter the “zone of the snake”. This is what she calls that dangerous sphere of influence in which the protagonists move, and into which one has to penetrate. In addition, in her school she transposes documentary theatre methods onto cinema, in which sound has a special role to play. Some of the most interesting, controversial and courageous documentaries that have come out of Russia in recent years emerged from under her aegis, among them such internationally known works as Milana, Winter, Go Away! and Children 404. In her master class she will explain the “Razbezhkina Method” using selected film examples. The Polish example DOK Talk Special Documentaries in Turkey: The Next Frontier? When we talk about disobedience in documentary film we inevitably think of the Polish school. Its representatives were invariably firebrands in several respects: they courageously and radically opposed political dogma and shifted artistic boundaries. At the same time their films were characterised by great social responsibility. Later generations built on the work of founding fathers Jerzy Bossak and Kazimierz Karabasz to renew the creative documentary film – as this year’s retrospectives illustrate. Naturally, the backdrop for this retrospective is also formed by current political and social developments in Poland (as part of Europe), which call for nothing less than a new “cinema of moral unrest”. While the international reputation of Polish documentary film (rightly) holds firm, it would appear that in recent years any critical analysis of social reality in the filmmakers’ own country has gone astray. Or is a new wave of social criticism about to be unleashed? Will the new restrictive conditions under which filmmakers have to work provoke inventiveness and resistance? What political role can documentary films even play today? We will be discussing these questions together with some of Polish documentary films’ most important rebels and pioneers of filmmaking. When Wed 2 Nov 16:00 – 18:00 Where Polnisches Institut Language English Access Everybody welcome Moderators Dr. Grit Lemke, DOK Leipzig, co-curator Polish retrospective, Kornel Miglus, Polish Institute Berlin, co-curator Polish retrospective Panelists Maciej Drygas, filmmaker, Warsaw Jacek Petrycki, cinematographer / filmmaker, WFDiF, Warsaw Maria ZmarzKoszanowicz, filmmaker, Warsaw Maciej Kubicki, Telemark Sp. Zo.o., Warsaw The documentary scene in Turkey has grown considerably since 2000, with a rising number of compelling creative documentaries, more festivals, and social media platforms that offer documentaries much-needed exposure. The Country Focus on Turkey unites politically up-to-date and controversial documentary and animated films: independent filmmaking that challenges the official narratives told by the government. However, the recent changes in Turkey’s political climate have put filmmakers in an increasingly difficult position. The film I Remember for example, had to be withdrawn from the Ankara Film Festival in April 2016 following a number of censorship measures. The work by Kurdish director Selim Yıldız is a personal recollection of the massacre in Roboski by Turkish armed forces in 2011. The issue of the Armenian genocide is made the subject of discussion in Return and The Eagle’s Tree. Many films shift the focus onto the actors from protest movements that have originated in recent years. They include, for example, an activist for LGBT rights during the protests in Gezi Park, along with neighbourhood residents in their struggle to preserve a historic cinema in Istanbul. This panel will discuss some of the key issues that documentary film production in Turkey faces today, from funding and distribution to artistic expression in the midst of censorship debates. 37 When Wed 2 Nov 19:30 – 21:30 Where Zeitgeschichtliches Forum Leipzig Language English Access Everybody welcome Moderator Özge Calafato, curator Country Focus Turkey, Abu Dhabi Panelists Basak Callioglu, ARTvoltage, London Gürcan Keltek, 29P, Istanbul Kazım Öz, Istanbul Fırat Yücel, Emek Bizim, İstanbul Bizim initiative, Istanbul 38 39 Talk Talk DOK Talk Special Die archivierte DDR – Aspekte des Umgangs mit historischem Filmmaterial DOK Talk Special The Language of Protest – Artistic Forms of Expression in the Ukrainian and Russian Context Nach über 25 Jahren ist das DDR-Filmerbe noch lange nicht komplett ausgewertet. In May 2014, the Crimean film director Oleg Sentsov was abducted by Russian Federation security services. He was later accused of being the organiser of a terrorist group and put under arrest. After a show trial, the artist was sentenced to 20 years in a penal colony and taken to Yakutia. The exhibition Sentsov’s Camera takes us back to these events. In essay form, it tells of how conflicts become inscribed in spaces, and how the inhabitants of these spaces suddenly feel that they are prisoners. The story goes beyond Crimea and the Ukrainian borders to other landscapes such as the Isle of Rügen in Germany or the Solovetsky Islands in Russia. This talk will take us to the interface between art, documentary film and resistance. In times of accelerated history, documentaries about protest movements can turn into important testimonies of disintegrating public spaces more quickly than expected. Furthermore, under the pressure of censorship or self-censorship, the artistic intention behind a documentary can prove to be a gesture of protest. In the roundtable discussion, protest will be considered both in terms of content and as a form used by filmmakers from Russia and Ukraine. Tour of the exhibition with curator Kateryna Mishchenko followed by a panel discussion with Marina Razbezhkina, Ksenia Marchenko and Nadia Parfan. This potential audience includes all people with sight or hearing loss as well as an international audience of people who don’t have access to appropriate subtitles yet (e.g. expats, tourists, international students, immigrants). Greta & Starks are two apps that enable people with sight or hearing loss to experience fully accessible cinema everywhere. Starks also includes foreign language subtitles for an international audience. Thousands of audio descriptions, closed captions and subtitles in many languages are produced each year allover Europe, but are merely accessible. This presentation aims to give answers to the questions on how these assets could be made accessible, how value and access for new recipients could be created and how the value of audio description, closed captions and subtitles could be enhanced more easily. This will enable fully enjoyable films for all people who would like to go to the cinema, but don’t have access to the language version or subtitles they need, in order to fully understand the film. To enhance the film experience, for existing subtitles special smart headsets can be very useful. We developed strong, beautifully styled, wireless and affordable smart headsets for the projection of subtitles for the cinema industry. We are looking forward to present our ideas and show how it could work for your film.
