Eine Einleitung in die transzendentale Phänomenologie Edmund Husserls über die Beschreibung der
Lebenswelt, mit besonderem Akzent auf die Leiblichkeit und Intersubjektivität, durch die die
Lebenswelt vorgegeben wird.
An introduction into the transcendental phenomenology Edmund Husserl´s via description of the
Lifeworld with a special accent on the bodily and intersubjective character of the pre givenness of the
Lifeworld.

Utopia as an Oikological Topic

Inhalt:
Das Utopische als ein oikologisches Thema betrifft das Verhältnis, das zwischen unserer Verankerung
– in unserem Leib, in Häusern, an Orten, in und an denen wir leben – und dem besteht, was nicht oder
noch nicht ist. Zentrale Fragen wären dabei: Wie entsteht überhaupt der Drang, angesichts von
Sesshaftigkeit, also der Bindung an einen Ort, andere Orte als alternative Lebensorte zu imaginieren?
Inwiefern ist das Thema des Utopischen ein Beleg für die Abhängigkeit bildlicher, literarischer,
philosophischer und religiöser Reflexion von menschlicher Siedlungsgeschichte, und wie spiegelt sich
Letztere in Ersterer? Aufgabe wird sein, diese Fragen mit einer philosophischen Analyse von kulturellen
Strömungen aus unterschiedlichen Epochen und Weltregionen zu behandeln.
To deal with the utopian as an oikological topic – that means to analyze the relationship between our
existential rooting – in our living body, in houses and places in which we actually are dwelling – and
that what does not or not yet exist. Main questions are: From where does emerge the impulse to
imagine other places as alternatives for living considering the fact of human settlement that says
people is bound to their places? To what extent is the topic of the utopian an index for the fact that
pictorial, literary, philosophical, and religious reflection depends on human settlement, and how do
the former reflect the latter? The central task is to deal with these questions by using the method of
philosophical analysis of cultural phenomena from different epochs and regions.

European Philosophy 1450-1650: Standpoints of the Utopian in Early Modern Age

Die frühe europäische Neuzeit kennt eine Reihe von sozialutopischen Entwürfen: 1516 erscheint De
optimo statu rei publicae deque nova insula Utopia von Thomas Morus als fiktiver Reisebericht, gefolgt
1534 von einer Passage aus Gargantua und Pantagruel von François Rabelais mit der Schilderung der
Abtei Thélème (La Vie très horrifique du grand Gargantua, père de Pantagruel, Kap. 52-57). Der Mönch
und Humanist Tommaso Campanella verfasst 1602 in neapolitanischer Festungshaft die erst 1623
publizierte Schrift La città del Sole, wie auch die 1614 niedergeschriebene Nova Atlantis von Francis
Bacon erst nach seinem Tod 1627 erscheinen kann. Es wird zu untersuchen sein, wie diese utopischen
Entwürfe vor dem Hintergrund zeitgeschichtlicher Konstellationen und ideengeschichtlicher
Reminiszenzen das Neue eines noch nicht jeweils unterschiedlich zu denken versuchen.
During the Renaissance era in Europe a series of social-utopian essays came into being: De optimo
statu rei publicae deque nova insula Utopia, a fictitious travel report by Thomas Morus, appeared in
1516, and the description of the Abbey of Thélème in François Rabelais’ La Vie très horrifique du grand
Gargantua, père de Pantagruel (ch. 52-57) in 1534. The essay La città del Sole the monk and humanist
Tommaso Campanella wrote in 1602 during his imprisonment in Naples was published only in 1623,
and Francis Bacon’s Nova Atlantis dated from 1614 was published after his death in 1627. Against the
backdrop of contemporary historical situations as well as traditions of ideas the seminar will analyze
in which different ways these utopian essays try to think the newness of a not-yet.

Anthropologie der Technik: Arnold Gehlen und Günther Anders
In der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts stellen sich die Philosophische Anthropologie und die
Philosophie der Technik als Elemente eines einzigen Denkshorizont dar. Im Mittelpunkt dieses
komplexen Szenario steht die Hauptfrage nach die „Stellung des Menschen im Kosmos“, die schon
Scheler formuliert hatte. Ziel dieses Kurses soll dabei eine Analyse zweier widersprüchliche Antworte
an die anthropologische Grundfrage, deren gemeinsamer Punkt die enge Beziehung mit der Probleme
der Technik ist. Wir werden uns hierzu mit den Philosophien Arnold Gehlens und Günther Anders, und
deren jeweilige Perspektiven zu verstehen versuchen. Da das Seminar in Form eines Blockseminars an
zwei Terminen stattfindet, werden wir uns am ersten Termin mit dem Hauptwerk Arnold Gehlens Der
Mensch, seine Natur und seine Stellung in der Welt und am zweiten Termin in Auszügen mit Werk
Günther Anders, Die Antiquiertheit des Menschen. Band I: Über die Seele im Zeitalter der zweiten
industriellen Revolution befassen. Neben einer theoretischen Einführung in Denken und Werk beider
Philosophen durch den Dozenten wird die gemeinsame Textarbeit an Passagen und Grundproblemen
der Anthropologie der Technik im Zentrum des Seminars stehen.

Course Description
Philosophical Anthropology: Gehlen and Anders
In the first half of the 20th Philosophical Anthropology and Philosophy of Technique turn up as parts
of a same line of thought. At the center of this complex scenario stands the main question about the
"position of man in the universe", which already had Scheler formulated. The aim of this course is to
analyze two contradictory answer to this anthropological basic question, whose common point is the
close relationship with the problems of the technique. So we will try to understand the philosophy
Arnold Gehlen’s and Günther Anders, and their respective perspectives around the central issue just
saw. Since the course will take place in the form of a block seminar on two different lectures, on the
first we will concentrate on Arnold Gehlen’s book Der Mensch, seine Natur und seine Stellung in der
Welt and on the second on of Günther Anders book Die Antiquiertheit des Menschen. Band I: Über die
Seele im Zeitalter der zweiten industriellen Revolution. The course will consist of an introduction into
the thought and works of these two philosophers and a joint interpretation and discussion of
significant parts and basic problems of the Philosophy of Technology.

Philosophische Anthropologie: Scheler und Plessner
Die Philosophische Anthropologie bezeichnet neben einer philosophischen Teildisziplin eine
spezifische philosophische Denkströmung in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, die im Mittelpunkt
dieser Lehrveranstaltung stehen soll. Ziel dieses Kurses soll dabei eine Einführung in die Philosophische
Anthropologie sein. Wir werden uns hierzu mit den Philosophien zweier Hauptvertreter der
Philosophischen Anthropologie, Max Scheler und Hellmuth Plessner, auseinandersetzen und deren
jeweilige Grundlegungen der Philosophischen Anthropologie zu verstehen versuchen. Da das Seminar
in Form eines Blockseminars an zwei Terminen stattfindet, werden wir uns am ersten Termin mit dem
Hauptwerk Max Schelers Die Stellung des Menschen im Kosmos und am zweiten Termin in Auszügen
mit Helmuth Plessners Werk Die Stufen des Anorganischen und der Mensch. Einleitung in die

Philosophical Anthropology: Scheler und Plessner
Philosophical Anthropology, apart from signifying a specific philosophical sub-discipline, is an
important philosophical school of thought in the first half of the 20th century which shall be the topic
of this course. The aim of the course is to give an introduction into Philosophical Anthropology. For
this purpose we will have a look at the philosophies of the two most prominent and early protagonists
of Philosophical Anthropology, Max Scheler and Helmuth Plessner, and try to understand their
conceptions of Philosophical Anthropology. Since the course will take place in the form of a block
seminar on two different weekends, on the first weekend we will concentrate on Max Schelers book
Die Stellung des Menschen im Kosmos and on the second weekend on parts of Helmuth Plessners book
Die Stufen des Anorganischen und der Mensch. Einleitung in die Philosophische Anthropologie. The
course will consist of an introduction into the thought and works of these two philosophers and a joint
interpretation and discussion of significant parts and basic problems of the aforementioned books.

Inhalt:
Medienphilosophien. Welche Relevanz hat Medialität für die Philosophie? Was ist überhaupt ein
Medium? Wie verhalten sich Medium und Medien zueinander? Welche Konsequenzen hat es für die
Philosophie, wenn ein Denken nicht entweder von einem Subjekt oder einem Objekt ausgeht,
sondern von einem Medium? Ausgehend von einer strukturellen Basisbestimmung von Medien als
Mitteilungen soll diese Zwischendimension ausgelotet werden anhand von Texten von u.a. Friedrich
Nietzsche, Roland Barthes, Marshall McLuhan und Niklas Luhmann. Eigene Vorschläge und Beiträge
der Teilnehmer*innen zur Seminargestaltung sind ausdrücklich erwünscht.
Philosophies of Media. Which relevance has Mediality for Philosophy? What exactly is a medium? How
does mediality relate to the media? What are the consequences for philosophy when one starts to
think not from the position of a subject or an object, but from something ‘between’ it, some medial
appearance? Beginning with a minimal description of mediality as something which is opening a
dimension of a shared middle and community between something, this position in between shall be
explored with help from texts by Friedrich Nietzsche, Roland Barthes, Marshall McLuhan, Niklas
Luhmann et al. Own offers like e.g. further reading suggestions to the class by the participants are
highly encouraged.

Inhalt:
Diese Übung hat das Ziel, bereits erworbene Kompetenzen im Sprechen, Schreiben sowie im Hör- und
Textverstehen der deutschen Sprache weiter zu vertiefen. Außerdem sollen Wortschatzkenntnisse
erweitert sowie grammatische Fähigkeiten gefestigt werden. Diskutiert werden sollen im Rahmen der
Übung kleinere philosophische und literarische Texte bzw. Videos. Durch das regelmäßige Verfassen
kleinerer Texte sowie durch die aktive Teilnahme im Kurs, auch in Form von Kurzreferaten, sollen die
aktiven Kompetenzen der Teilnehmenden weiter geschult werden.
In der ersten Sitzung findet ein Einstufungstest statt. Teilnahmevoraussetzung: Deutschkenntnisse auf
dem Niveau B1/B2.
Description of the course in English
This tutorial course aims to deepen already acquired skills in talking, reading, writing and listening to
German. Furthermore knowledge of vocabulary will be broadened and grammatical knowledge
consolidated. In the context of this course short philosophical and literary texts and video clips will be
discussed. Active language competences will be trained by writing short texts and active participation
in the course, as well as by presenting abstracts.
In the first lesson a placement test will be hold. Prerequisite for attending the course: knowledge of
the German language at level B1/B2.
