Kunststoff in NRW – Europas Kunststoffstandort Nr. 1
Nordrhein-Westfalen ist Europas Kunststoffstandort
Nr. 1 und das Zentrum der deutschen Kunststoffindustrie.
Hier ist die gesamte Wertschöpfungskette auf höchstem
Niveau vertreten: NRW ist kunststoffland! Die Bandbreite
reicht dabei von den mittelständisch geprägten Unternehmen der Kunststoffverarbeitung und des Kunststoffmaschinenbaus, über branchennahe Dienstleister bis
hin zu den international aufgestellten Großunternehmen
der Kunststofferzeugung.
Die Kunststoffindustrie in NRW steht für rund 1.000 Betriebe mit über 140.000 Beschäftigten und einem Jahresumsatz von über 38 Milliarden Euro. Sie ist mit ihrem
ausgeprägten Querschnittscharakter in NordrheinWestfalen Träger und Treiber von Innovationen in den
meisten Branchen und in nahezu allen Lebensbereichen.
Ob im Haushalt, im Auto, in der Landwirtschaft, im
Wohnungsbau, in der Unterhaltungselektronik, in der
Verpackungsindustrie oder in der Medizin, überall finden
Kunststoffe Verwendung. Kaum ein Wirtschaftszweig
steht nicht in Verbindung mit diesem „Werkstoff des
21. Jahrhunderts“ – die volkswirtschaftliche Bedeutung
von Kunststoffen ist enorm. Einer der Gründe hierfür:
Zentrale Werkstoffeigenschaften wie Formbarkeit, Härte,
Elastizität, Bruchfestigkeit, Temperaturbeständigkeit und
chemische Beständigkeit lassen sich durch die Wahl von
Ausgangsmaterial, Herstellungsverfahren und Beimischung von Additiven in weiten Grenzen variieren und
somit optimal an die jeweiligen Anforderungen anpassen,
die an das Endprodukt gestellt werden.
Gerade heute von zentraler Bedeutung: Praktikable
Lösungen zur Bewältigung des Klimawandels sind
untrennbar mit Beiträgen der Kunststoffindustrie in den
Bereichen Leichtbau und den Feldern Ressourcen- und
Energieeffizienz verbunden.

Plastics in NRW – Europe’s No. 1 Location for Plastics
As well as being the hub of the German plastics industry,
North Rhine-Westphalia is also the no. 1 location for
plastics Europe-wide. Leading companies from the entire
plastics value chain are based throughout the State of
NRW, making it the plastics capital of Europe. On our
doorstep you will find everything from SMEs processing
plastics, plastics machinery manufacturers, associated
service providers, right through to major international
plastics producers.
There are approx. 1,000 companies working in the plastics
industry in NRW, employing more than 140,000 staff
and with an annual turnover in excess of 38 billion Euros.
Thanks to its distinct cross-sectional character, the
plastics industry provides a vital impetus to most industries and nearly all areas of life in NRW.
Whether we are talking about household goods, cars,
agriculture, construction work, consumer electronics,
the packaging industry or the healthcare sector, plastics
are simply everywhere. There is surely no industry that
gets by without this “raw material of the 21st century”, its
economic significance is huge. One of the reasons for its
importance are some of the product’s own key-defining
features. By selecting the right base substance, processing
it and combining it with the right additives we can create a
product that can be malleable, hard, elastic, unbreakable,
heat- or chemical-resistant, a material that can be perfectly adapted to meet the most exacting requirements
placed on any final product, whatever its purpose.
Today more than ever, it is important to find practical
solutions for meeting the challenges we face in connection
with climate change: and such solutions are inextricably
linked to the contribution made by the plastics industry
in the fields of lightweight construction, saving resources
and energy efficiency.

To strengthen the plastics value chain still further, numerous companies and associations have come together to
form the organisation kunststoffland NRW. This network
is intended to function as a catalyst and provide fresh
impulses that are of major benefit to anyone interested
in successfully promoting business in or in co-operation
with NRW.
