STAR-CHOREOGRAF FREDRIK RYDMAN IN EXKLUSIV-INTERVIEW
Er ist ein Weltstar in der Street Dance Szene und Choreograf des internationalen Bühnenerfolgs „Swan Lake Reloaded“: Fredrik Rydman. Sein
aktuelles Projekt „The Nutcracker Reloaded – Tschaikovsky meets Streetdance“ ist ein neuer Remix, der das klassische Ballett ins 21. Jahrhundert
katapultiert. Tschaikovskys klassische Musik wird mit Hip Hop Beats und
Popmusik gemixt. Ein amerikanischer R´n´B-Sänger, gelangweilte Blogger
und Instagrammer treffen auf klassische und moderne Bösewichte wie
Dracula, Super Mario und Darth Vader. Mittendrin das Mädchen Clara,
Waisenkind und obdachlos, auf der Suche nach seinen Eltern. Rydman
mixt diese sozialkritischen Elemente wie kein anderer mit Breakdance, Hip Hop und Ballett. Dazu eine innovative Bühneninszenierung mit
Video-Design und 3D-Projektionen. Wir sprachen exklusiv mit dem
schwedischen Star-Choreografen über seine ganz persönliche Herangehensweise an solch spektakuläre Genre-übergreifenden Produktionen
You already have a long creative history with the Eurovision Song
Contest. The latest project was the choreography for the ESC final
in Stockholm in May 2016. What were the special challenges of this
cooperation?
This time I would say that we had to somehow comment on the refugee
situation in Europe. I came up with the idea of grey people as a pure
dance number. I guess that was the kind of right level of bringing the
message of . Not to explicit, but more emotional. I have had enormous
response from that number
“We are the heroes of our time, but we´re dancing with the demons in
our minds” – this statement in Mans Zelmerlöw´s later winner song of
the ESC 2015 inspired you so much, that you created his live-choreography on stage. What exactly do you like about this sentence?

Your Streetdance production „Swan Lake Reloaded“ was seen by over
250.000 fans all over Europe. Was this success an inspiration for your
new piece “The Nutcracker Reloaded”?
Well , not really, the inspiration comes from that I got an idea of how to
flip this story around, and make it connect with the world we live in today.
Also the original music is a big inspiration
The premiere in Stockholm a few weeks ago was a big success - which
feedback do you get from fans, protagonists and partners?
To summarize I would say: Unexpected, funniest danceshow I´ve been to,
I was crying. Some old dance purist called it garbage, but I have learned
not to take it so critical.
That we as grown ups have a responsibility to the kids, since we are
heroes to them. So the kids can also be a little demon in our minds since
we can´t just follow our insticts, but we have to think about what we do,
because kids will do the same.
You like to address social and humanitarian problems in your productions. In “The Nutcracker Reloaded” you create a modern fairy
tale around a homeless child. Why are you choosing this way to draw
attention on these serious issues?
I don´t really know, but I guess it is something in your everyday life now
that you can´t just ignore. I also have 3 kids and it has made me think a
lot about that we all need our parents. So the child is homeless but more
important is that she is an orphan and she is searching desperately for her
parents.

On the other hand you work also on more commercial projects like TVSpots for Coca Cola, as Creative Director for the TV Show X-Faktor or DJ
Avicii. Do you need this diversity to keep an open mind?
Yes I think so. I would like to be somewhere between the arts and the
more commercial or show-world because I think the can lift each other.
What can the fans expect from “The Nutcracker Reloaded” on stage?
Do you have a favorite part in the show?
Hmmm, One I can´t tell, because it is a surprise. But you can expect cool
energetic dance, Illusions from dance light projections working together,
and a broad range of great music

Deine Streetdance Produktion “Swan Lake Reloaded” haben über
250.000 Fans in ganz Europa gesehen. War dieser Erfolg eine Inspiration für Dein neues Werk „The Nutcracker Reloaded“?
Nicht wirklich, denn die Inspiration kommt von der grundlegenden Idee,
wie man diese Story um das Ursprungswerk herum erzählt und es mit
unserer heutigen Welt in Kontext setzt. Auch die Originalmusik ist eine
große Inspiration.
Die Premiere in Stockholm vor einigen Wochen war ein großer Erfolg
– welches Feedback hast Du von Fans, Protagonisten und Partnern
bekommen?
Für dem Eurovision Song Contest bist Du schon lange kreativ tätig.
Das aktuellste Projekt war die Choreografie für das ESC Finale in
Stockholm im Mai 2016. Was waren die speziellen Herausforderungen
dieser Kooperation?
Dieses Mal hatte ich das Gefühl, die Flüchtlingssituation in Europa irgendwie kommentieren zu müssen. Da hatte ich die Idee mit den grauen Menschen in einer puristischen Tanz Nummer. Ich denke, das war die richtige
Art und Weise, die Message auszudrücken. Nicht zu explizit, sondern
eher emotional. I bekam enormen Zuspruch für diese Nummer.
“Wir sind die Helden unserer Zeit, aber wir tanzen mit den Dämonen
in unseren Köpfen.” – dieses Statement in Mans Zelmerlöws späterem
Gewinnertitel des ECS 2015 inspirierte Dich so sehr, dass Du seine
Live-Choreografie für die Bühne kreiert hast. Was genau gefällt Dir an
diesem Satz?
Dass wir als Erwachsene eine Verantwortung Kindern gegenüber haben,
weil wir Helden für sie sind. Also können die Kinder auch kleine Dämonen
in unseren Köpfen sein, weil wir nicht einfach unseren Instinkten folgen
können, sondern darüber nachdenken müssen, was wir tun, weil Kinder
es uns nachmachen werden.
Du thematisierst gerne soziale und humanitäre Probleme in Deinen
Produktionen. In „The Nutcracker Reloaded“ schaffst Du ein modernes
Märchen rund um ein obdachloses Kind. Warum wählst Du diesen
Weg, um Aufmerksamkeit auf solch ernste Themen zu lenken?
Zusammenfassend würde ich sagen, es war alles dabei: von “Unerwartet”,
“Lustigste Dance-Show, in der ich je war” bis hin zu “Ich habe geweint”.
Alteingesessene Tanz-Puristen haben es Müll genannt, aber ich habe
gelernt, so etwas nicht so kritisch zu sehen.

Ich denke, dass es in unserem heutigen Alltag Dinge gibt, die man nicht
einfach ignorieren kann. Ich habe auch 3 Kinder und das hat mich zum
Nachdenken gebracht, wie sehr wir alle unsere Eltern brauchen. Das
Kind (in The Nutcracker Reloaded) ist obdachlos, aber noch wichtiger ist,
dass sie ein Waisenkind ist und verzweifelt nach ihren Eltern sucht.
Andererseits arbeitest Du auch an kommerzielleren Projekten wie
TV-Spots für Coca Cola, als Creative Director für die TV-Show X-Faktor
oder DJ Avicii. Brauchst Du diese Abwechslung, um aufgeschlossen zu
bleiben?
Was können die Fans von “The Nutcracker Reloaded” auf der Bühne
erwarten? Hast Du einen Lieblings-Teil in der Show?
Hmmm, einen kann ich nicht verraten, weil er eine Überraschung sein
soll. Aber man kann sich freuen auf coolen, energiegeladenen Tanz, Illusionen aus dem Zusammenspiel von Tanz und Lichtprojektionen und eine
große Bandbreite großartiger Musik. .
Ja, ich denke schon. Ich fühle mich wohl irgendwo zwischen der Kunst
und der eher kommerziellen oder showbezogenen Welt, weil ich denke
sie können sich gegenseitig zu neuen Höhen führen.
