Conser vation
Modern technology has developed in a manner which often conflicts with the environment. Nevertheless, it is possible and practical to achieve a high level of technology without altering the overall
environment or depleting non-renewable natural resources.
There are two basic methods of conser ving the natural environment. One is alternative
technology in which techniques(such as windmills and solar energy)must be found for providing
power in a more decentralized manner. The other is to tr y to minimize the ef fects of modern
technology by more efficient use of materials and more effective pollution control. The differences
between the two approaches depend upon whether today’s megalopolis is too large to be economical. There comes a point( 40 )because of high population densities and the failure of attempts to
meet energy demand.
Present energy policy makers are considering new energy sources to meet the demands of a
growing population. The main sources used have been oil, gas, and coal, which are in limited supply,
and nuclear power, which has problems concerning radioactive waste storage. Geothermal,
hydroelectric, hydrothermal, wind, and solar energy( 41 ), but only solar energy is likely to
become the main power source for many countries.
Many of the materials used daily in a technological society are destined to be discarded. Rags,
paper, metal, glass, and plastics are all substances that could be recycled or reused. ( 42 )
,
ground glass can be used for road surfacing. Many industrial residues, like slag and ash, can be used
in the same way, or as building materials. Research is being done to determine methods of separating
useful products from industrial and domestic waste. Plastic and organic materials contain
hydrocarbons which could be used for making gas and oil and are presently destroyed by burning. Extracting these commodities from waste may be vital in the future, considering that( 43 ).

② have been used as conventional energy sources

② oil and gas are non-renewable natural resources

London Underground Train Strike
In the summer 2015 London subway strike, transportation choices in London were: take a hike,
ride a bike, or try to find a bus that’s going your way. Millions of commuters jammed buses, rented
bicycles or simply walked for miles to and from work as a 24-hour strike shut down the British capital’s
famed subway system and threw public transpor t into chaos. Train drivers on the London
Underground solidly supported the strike in a dispute over pay and schedules that will take effect when
24-hour service is introduced on some lines later this year. The drivers’ unanimity has made this
strike more severe than previous ones in which management was able to keep a few lines operating.
Business groups said the strike would cost this city of 8.6 million people tens of millions of
pounds in lost productivity.
“I have to file a statement for today and I don’t know how I’m going to do it. I am utterly fed up,”
said attorney Susan Miller, 48. “I just don’t think the strikers have seen the big picture here.”
London’s subway system, with 4 million journeys a day, normally shuts down shortly after
midnight, with the overnight shift reserved for track maintenance. While it has operated all night on
New Year’s Eve, the move to have some lines running 24 hours on weekends marks a big change for the
152-year-old system.
London Underground’s managing director Mike Brown apologized for the disruption but insisted
it was a “remarkably fair” pay offer. “This strike is unnecessary,” he said. Transport officials said the
offer included a 2 percent salary increase, a £500 night subway launch bonus and an additional £2,000
one-off bonus for night subway drivers.
The subway staff labour union said that London Underground was trying to impose new work
patterns that would cause stress and ruin the work-life balance of people in critical safety jobs.
“We’ve wasted three months in negotiations that failed to address staff concerns,” said the union’s
general secretary, Mick Cash.
The one thing everyone agreed on is that the city’s commuters took it on the chin. Lida Falvey,
53, tried to attend a medical appointment she had scheduled five months ago. The journey normally
takes an hour, but three hours into her trip Thursday she was still trying to get to St. Mary’s Hospital.
“I came out of the house at six in the morning. But I am still on the bus to the hospital and I am
not sure if I can get there in time,” she said.
Some commuters supported the strikers.
“You have to take action sometimes when you are up against the forces of capitalism,” said Tricha
Passway, a 58-year-old university lecturer.

44. Which description best fits the general attitude of London commuters to last summer’s strike?
① It was difficult to get to work, but they were going to try.
② None of them approved. They think the strikers were wrong.
③ Some approved, some didn’t, but they all gave up.
④ It struck at the forces of capitalism.
45. According to the passage, what was the attitude of London Underground management?
① London Underground had made a fair offer of lower pay to the union workers.
② The strike was not necessary, and the workers were being fairly treated.
③ The strike was worthwhile, because the staff would have to work at night in future.
④ They didn’t want to pay the workers any more money because they were lazy.
46. According to the passage, what was the attitude of the union to the strike?
① The Union was firmly opposed to the strike, which didn’t address the whole picture.
② The Union felt that the plans would cause stress without improving safety.
③ The Union staff would like more free time, not more money.
④ The Union had used their time well on beneficial negotiations.
47. According to the passage, which of the following was probably NOT true?
① The strike was not connected with being paid more money for more work.
② The strike caused severe disruption to commuters to London.
③ London commuters would suffer a great deal because of the strike.
④ London commuters faced up to the challenge of getting to work.
