Nagoya City Museum Special Exhibition:
Roman Murals of Pompeii, a World Heritage Site
名古屋市博物館特別展「日伊国交樹立150周年記念 世界遺産 ポンペイの壁画展」
Around 2,000 years ago Mount Vesuvius (in
what is now southern Italy) erupted,
consuming surrounding towns including
Pompeii under pyroclastic flows and
volcanic ash. Yet this tragedy also preserved
the entire town as it was, so that today we
can learn much about the rich lifestyle of
those who lived at the time of ancient
Rome. In particular, murals that adorned the
walls of mansions and villas captivate the
modern viewer with their vivid depictions of

palaces, landscapes, and fauna and flora.

This exhibition, focusing on wall paintings

which are being exhibited in Japan for the first time.

Gujō Odori 郡上おどり
Dancing is an essential part of any summer festival in
Japan, in most cases taking place on one or two nights.
Gujō City in Gifu Prefecture is famed for its Gujō Odori
(おどり / dancing) which is usually held on thirty-one
nights between mid-July and early September. On four
nights over the O-Bon period in mid-August, tetsuya
odori (徹夜おどり / all-night dancing) is held, and the
streets are filled with revelers enjoying the traditional
dances until dawn.
The festival began over 400 years ago in an effort to
have all residents, irrespective of class, gather and
interact, and this inclusive spirit can still be felt today.
Men and women dance the same steps (which

beginners can pick up pretty easily), and you don't

need to wear yukata (summer kimono) to participate.

Be prepared - Keep your Medicine
Handbook with you
お薬手帳を携帯しましょう
Your medicine handbook (お薬手帳 / o-kusuri techō) is a record of
medicines you've been prescribed, dosage, how often each is to be
taken, things to be careful of, and so on; so you can use it to check
your previous prescriptions, whether what you're taking has any
side effects, etc.
The medicine handbook is useful to have with you in an
emergency, because it will be easier to determine the medicine you
need.
Make a habit of carrying your medicine handbook with you.

Nagoya City Public Elementary School
Enrollment Applications
小学校入学に関する手続きについて
Were you aware that children of foreign nationality can enroll in
public elementary schools? If you live in Nagoya City and would
like your child to attend a Nagoya City public elementary school
(kōritsu shōgakkō / 公立小学校) from April 2016, you can apply at
your local ward office's Residents' Affairs Division (shimin-ka / 市民
課) or the Community & Residents Affairs Division (shimin-gakari /
市民係) of your local branch office. Applications for children born
between April 2, 2010 and April 1, 2011 are now being accepted.
Enrollment is based upon your area of residence and children
cannot be enrolled in a school in an area where they are not a
resident. After application, it will be necessary for your child to
have a medical check-up on a specific date (after October 1) set by
the local elementary school. In January 2017 a notice of enrollment
acceptance (shūgaku tsūchi-sho / 就学通知書) will be mailed out
from the local ward office.
Children who are not registered as residents can qualify for
enrollment if documentation (such as birth certificate or passport,
rental contract for housing, etc.) verifying date of birth, name,
residential address, etc. can be provided. For more information
please contact the Residents' Affairs Division at your local ward
office, or the Community & Residents Affairs Division of your local
branch office.
Be prepared - Stockpile food and drinking
water for emergencies
防災情報 - 食料品や飲料水を備蓄しましょう
Should a major earthquake occur, access to food, water, and other
necessities may be cut off, and distribution may take several days
to resume. Keep a stock of food and water, enough for about
seven days; and have about three days' worth of that stock ready
so that you can carry it with you if you need to evacuate.
Rolling stock (Stockpiling food)
ローリングストック
( 家庭内流通備蓄)
You can stockpile food easily by slightly building up your stock
of the long-life food products (food in retort pouches, canned
foods, dried foods, etc.) that you usually buy, using the older
products first and then buying enough to replace the portion
used.
If you have a portable gas stove (kassetto konro / カセットコンロ)
handy, you'll be able to enjoy your long-life food hot.
