RELATIVE CLAUSES Adjectival Clauses/Modifiers RELATIVE CLAUSES A relative clause is the part of a sentence which describes a noun Eg. The cake (which) I ate yesterday was delicious. NOUN RELATIVE CLAUSE RELATIVE CLAUSES In Japanese, a relative clause always comes directly in front of the noun which it explains. This is different to the English word order. 例:きのう食べたケーキはおいしかったです。 RELATIVE CLAUSE NOUN RELATIVE CLAUSE RULES RULE 1 A relative clause must end with PLAIN FORM just before the noun. きのうよんだ本 今よんでいる本 あしたよむ本 The book I read yesterday... The book I am reading now... The book I will read tomorrow... RELATIVE CLAUSE RULES RULE 2 There is no は particle in a relative clause. The topic marker は is replaced by が. 父がよんでいる本 reading..
