Tanka consists of five units (often treated as
separate lines when Romanized or translated)
usually with the following pattern:
5-7-5-7-7 syllables.
The 5-7-5 is called the kami-no-ku

A weary meaningless life that used to be on my hands
I could have wasted on anything ― I felt so till I met you.
What should I have spared for you?
My life would have been well spent on you.
... Now, I find myself strangely sparing that life,
Which means much more to us, bearing weight of happiness for two.
May this doubly precious life last long along with love.
ながからむ心も知らず黒髪の
乱れてけさはものをこそ思へ
Long may you love me as hot as you did last night,
As densely long as my hair untidy still in bed...
Brooding over our future, possibly not so bright,
This morn I'll sleep on along with remnants of love.
