3rd Vienna Breast Surgery Day

Dear colleagues,
Programme
The 3rd Vienna Breast Surgery Day focuses on two
main topics: ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and
the operation of stage-IV tumours. 30 percent of all
breast operations are due to DCIS, and the mastectomy rates are even higher than those with invasive
carcinoma.
8.00 a.m.
The word “carcinoma” in DCIS gives many women
an unnecessary shock. Because DCIS does not
cause metastases and can be cured, many experts
would like to rename the disease. In addition to
finding a less frightening term for DCIS, we should
consider whether women are being over-treated
and rethink our therapy approach.
Research data appear inconclusive about whether
surgery is necessary for stage-IV tumours. We will
discuss new prospective data coming from Canada, US,
and Europe, to help us determine future treatment.
Comprehensive Cancer Center Vienna
We will discuss these topics with internationally renowned experts and speakers, who are also speaking at the St. Gallen Breast Cancer Conference.
